Bible Note: Danig The trinity is clearly seen in scripture however Sola Scriptura is never seen. Think about this, Jesus taught extraneous to scripture which would have to have been precluded had Sola Scriptura had existed before Jesus’ birth. Actually Sola Scriptura means more than what you listed. It means we must discard any teaching of anyone that was not officially included in the cannon of the Bible. Therefore when John the Apostle of Jesus Christ sat down with Polycarp John's disciple and expounded on the teachings of Jesus we must ignore them or if we do consider them take only the things that agree with our theology and toss the rest. Now I realize I my use of the word "discard" may be a little inflammatory but in effect that is exactly what we did with many church teachings that existed for 1500 years after death of Christ and we did it in the name of Sola Scriptura. Now I'm sure someone will jump on indulgences, or papacy and so forth to try to invalidate what I'm saying, that is expected. However I'm talking about more than that. I’m talking about traditions, rites, rituals (yes even those nasty rituals) that were put in place by the Apostles but not noted in scripture that were later discarded from the church by all that embraced Sola Scriptura. Example take the word sacred, it is almost not used in the Protestant church, nothing is considered sacred as such. Perhaps some of us consider our Bible sacred or perhaps something else in the church but the use of the word pretty much ends there. Yet we know in the Old Testament Temple worship many things were declared sacred by God do we not think God would still honor similar things in the New Testament church? Yet today the word has little meaning. However if we go back before Sola Scriptura many things were indeed declared sacred in the early church. Scripture itself is another example at one time the word was sacred and revered, today in many cases it has been reduced down to a technical manual, a guide book, a text book if you will. Men handle it carelessly, proof texting and ripping things from context to support their favorite agenda or what is selling to the crowd today. No Sola Scriptura does not mean the scripture is sacred, scripture is God inspired, scripture is infallible, or any of those things Sola Scriptura is sold on. It means people can pharisaically handle scripture and get away with it claiming Sola Scriptura. |
