Bible Note: Speaking "with other tongues" in Acts 2:4 refers to known languages, not ecstatic utterances, as the verses that follow verse 4 make very clear. ...... "The initial evidence of being baptized with the Holy Spirit is that you will begin to speak with other tongues." Scripture does not support this statement. Every regenerate believer is baptized with the Holy Spirit at the moment of regeneration (1 Cor. 12:13). This indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer has absolutely no connection whatever with ecstatic utterances. Nor do ecstatic utterances have any connection with the biblical definition of speaking in tongues. Speaking in tongues means speaking in a known language that is different from one's native language. That is all it meant at the time Acts 2 was written, and that is all it means now. --Hank |
