AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Chronicles 7:14 and My people, who are called by My Name, humble themselves, and pray and seek (crave, require as a necessity) My face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear [them] from heaven, and forgive their sin and heal their land. |
Subject: Question of Context? |
Bible Note: Greetings John! I fully agree that 2 Chr. 7:14 does not concern an essential of the faith. You are also correct that the NT sometimes applies OT passages in unexpected ways. My only concern is that we don’t try to do the same. Jesus is God and the NT writers were operating under Divine inspiration, but we aren’t. Please note, I’m not saying that this is what you are doing my friend. I’m just speaking in terms of our general interpretative approach to the OT. Sorry about the analogy! It is very difficult to find the perfect one! :-) My point simply was that the promise of 2 Chr. 7:14 did have an historical context. It was spoken to Solomon about Israel. Specific conditions and provisions are given. Personally, I don’t believe that it can be expanded (as a promise) universally. Though, I do believe that the principle can be applied universally that nations which seek God will be blessed. But, like you said, we can agree to disagree. I definitely would not be offended to hear this passage used in a sermon about how our nation should respond to God in a time like this! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
