81 | What translation do you prefer and why? | Heb 6:6 | New Creature | 181003
Hi kalos It's just that there isn't any warrant for the use of the word "if" for Heb. 6:6. A quick look at the Greek will bear this out. The word "if" is believed to have been inserted by Calvin's sucessor Theodore Beza in an attempt to lend support to the doctrine of perseverance of the saints. Therefore the correct rendering of Heb. 6:6 is as follows: and then have fallen away, it is impossible to renew them again to repentance, since they again crucify to themselves the Son of God, and put Him to open shame. 82 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 181000
Hi Cuddle I read the post you directed me to which was composed by Pastor John Moran. I agree with that post from him. here is something he stated in his post which I believe is important: 1) "The nature of the restraint must be supernatural." and"Both of these facts indicate that the restrainer could not be a human being." Like me, John Moran believes in the supernatural, non-human nature of the "restrainer" The only force I believe is powerful enough to restrain such lawlessness is the Holy Spirit. By the way, I don't believe John 14:6 relates to 2 Thess. 2:7 in any way. Blessings NC |

83 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 180981
Hi Cuddle Let me ask you a question: If the "restrainer" mentioned in 2 Thess. 2:7 isn't referring to the Holy Spirit, then who else could this be referring to? vrese 7 says this restrainer, restrains lawlessness, and verse 8 mentions the revealing of the "lawless one" whom the Lord Jesus shall slay with the breath of his mouth. I personally don't see anyone else besides the Holy Spirit who could possibly restrain this lawless one, also called the man of sin in verse 3, whose coming is according to the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, verse 9. No one but God has that sort of power to retrain this man of sin. Blessings NC |

84 | 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 WHO? | 2 Thess 2:7 | New Creature | 180942
Hi cuddle 2 Thess 2:7 For the mystery of lawlessness doth already work: only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. Until the restrainer be taken away. The "he" of this verse refers to the restrainer. katecho Thayer Definition: 1) to hold back, detain, retain 1b1) that which hinders, Antichrist from making his appearance He that hinders the Antichrist from making his appearance could not be referring to anyone else but the Holy Spirit under my current understanding of this verse. 85 | What translation do you prefer and why? | Heb 6:6 | New Creature | 180938
I prefer the NASB for it's word for word literalness. Below is what I believe is one translations miswording. Heb 6:6 KJV If they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame. From what I understand the word "if" was inserted into the King James Translation by a person named Beza who was a disciple of John Calvin, and there is no justification for it whatsoever in the Greek. The NASB says, "and then have fallen away"; the ASV puts it, "and then fell away"; the word "if" is not in the Greek in verse 6: In earlier translations vs. 6 reads: And having fallen away which was restored back to original meaning in the NASB Weymouth says "and then fall away"; Goodspeed translates it "and yet have fallen back." Consider what Adam Clarke wrote about this and the aorist tense: "And having fallen away." I can express my own mind on this translation nearly in the words of Dr. Macknight: "The participles who were enlightened, have tasted, and were made partakers, being aorists, are properly rendered by our translators in the past time; wherefore parapesontas, being an aorist, ought likewise to have been translated in the past time, ‘HAVE fallen away.’ Nevertheless, our translators, following …… Beza, who without any authority from ancient MSS. has inserted in his version the word ‘if,’ have rendered this clause, IF they fall away, that this text might not appear to contradict the doctrine of the perseverance of the saints. But as no translator should take upon him to add to or alter the Scriptures, for the sake of any favourite doctrine, I have translated parapesontas in the past time, ‘have fallen away,’ according to the true import of the word, as standing in connection with the other aorists in the preceding verses" (italics and capitals his). |

86 | Heaven helps those who help themselves. | Bible general Archive 3 | New Creature | 180936
UncleCnn. That statement cannot be found anywhere in the Bible. Samuel Smiles (1812-1904) published the first self-consciously personal-development "self-help" book — entitled "Self-Help" — in 1859. Its opening sentence- "Heaven helps those who help themselves", provides a variation of "God helps them that help themselves", the oft-quoted maxim that also appeared previously in Benjamin Franklin's Poor Richard's Almanac (1733 - 1758). 87 | How deep can the Gospel go | Acts 17:30 | New Creature | 180933
Doc Compare the Edwards commentary you posted in a reply to me, in contrast with the following commentary. John 5:40 And you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. And ye will not come ... - Though the Old Testament bears evidence that I am the Messiah; though you professedly search it to learn the way to life, and though my works prove it, yet you will not come to me to obtain life. From this we may learn: 1. that life is to be obtained in Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and he only can save us. 2. that, in order to do that, we must “come to him” - that is, must come in the way appointed, as lost sinners, and be willing to be saved by him alone. 3. that the reason why sinners are not saved lies in the will. “The only reason why sinners die is because ‘they will not come’ to Christ for life and happiness: it is not because they ‘cannot,’ but because they ‘will not’” (Henry). 4. Sinners have a particular opposition to going to “Jesus Christ” for eternal life. They would prefer any other way, and it is commonly not until all other means are tried that they are willing to submit to him. (Barnes Notes) "Jesus, who told some Jews in John 5:34: "I say these things that you may be saved." But "saved" they were not. Why? Because Christ added in verse 40, "You are unwilling to come to Me, that you may have life." Here is a clear case of "but ye would not," despite the clear offer of salvation." Jer. 9:6 they refuse to know me, saith the LORD. Blessings NC |

93 | Are there isolated evidences for this | Acts 17:30 | New Creature | 180857
As I see it, all that must be known about God, can be known. All men will stand before God without excuse. God has or will reveal Himself to "all men" either by way of internal special revelation, or external natural revelation. Rom 1:20 NLT From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God. Rom. 1:19-20 "makes it clear, that there is a revelation of God in nature that every man sees and knows. It is clear enough so that no one can miss it and universal enough so that no one can claim to be ignorant of it." Verse 19 says it two different times: "Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them." Then verse 20 says it again: "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen." "The truth about God is clearly seen in creation. That truth is available to every person. That truth "gets through" to every person. That explains why every culture on earth has some conception of a Supreme Being" Robert Mounce offers this helpful summary of the biblical teaching (Themes From Romans, p.12): No one is excluded. No one can get away with saying, "I don't believe in God." As someone has said, "You can't turn out the light by closing your eyes." The heathen who has never heard the gospel or the name of Jesus is as responsible as anyone else. Not for failing to accept a message he has never heard, but for rejecting the knowledge of God revealed in creation. People do not suffer eternal exclusion from God for not having been born to the right parents in the right part of the world, but for rejecting that knowledge of God which is readily available for all. Adrian Rogers tells of a man who owns a trucking company in the south where part of the hiring process is a lie detector test on which one of the questions is “Do you believe in God?". They have observed that even avowed atheists who answer this question "no" are shown to be liars by the lie detector! Note - I included some various short comments in my above reply from sources unknown to me." |

Even though the thread is 5 years old to you, it was new to me. I just now got around to reading it. Is there a rule against commenting on older threads? If I were to use your logic about "not disturbing musty archives" then I would also need to leave the Bible and all that is contained in it undisturbed as well, since it's archives are much older and mustier. 96 | Did Christ die for the world? | 1 John 2:2 | New Creature | 180781
Hi Doc; Without turning this into a long drawn out argument, let me just state that while I don't know much about Georgius and what else he may have believed, I don't find any fault in his comment on 1 John 2:2. And I'll leave it at that. I posted his comment on that verse for Tim, knowing he most likely would appreciate it as much as I did. But Tim can speak for himself. Blessings NC |

I have seen the following verse used in support of the idea that God cannot look upon sin. Hab 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? |

Pastor Tim You have been a real blessing to me in my studies. All the hard work you personally put into understanding God's word is now paying off in the lives of other believers such as myself. I just wanted to personally thank you for being so patient and willing to help us better understand God's word that we might grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour. Keep up the good work. From one who is watching and learning from the side-lines Thank you again, and blessings to you NC |

100 | Confused With Pastor | Rom 10:9 | New Creature | 173165
It appears the Pastor you spoke to, was merely looking for tell-tale signs and evidence that you had a genuine conversion. There are many individuals who have false professions of faith, and think they are saved, when actually they are not. I'm not saying thats the case with you, because I don't know you. Likewise, not personally knowing you, the Pastor you spoke with, was just doing the Pastorly thing, in attempting to determine whether or not you have a relationship with Christ Jesus, and what changes have occured in your life sine you received Christ by faith. If you have been saved, then changes must have taken place in your life. These changes can be sudden and abrupt, while other changes can occur gradually over time. Either way, it's not possible to become saved, and not have changes take place. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation; old things have passed away, and look, new things have come. (2 Cor. 5:17 Christ gives us a new attitude, and we begin moving in a new direction. We now love the things of God, and our love for the things of the world decrease. We now love Christ and the brethren, and desire to fellowship with them, because we are all one in Christ. That means we are His family members, and have all things in common. It is just natural for family to want to spend time together, Therefore I would advise you to find a Bible believing church to regularly attend. Even if you don't want to become a member. Jesus calls us His flock or sheep, and sheep need each other. When we are in the flock, the good Shepherd provides protection from the wolves, who are ready to devour the lone sheep. One last thing. If you have been saved you will have the internal witness of the Holy Spirit, testifying with your spirit that you now are a child of God. Rom 8:16 The Spirit himself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are children of God: It is good to desire baptism, but make sure it's for the right reason. NC |
