81 | Whats the laws purpose? | Romans | Country Girl | 124453
This is just an excerpt from Romans, Chapter 7 but I would recommend that you read the whole chapter as Paul does an excellent job of explaining this subject. Rom 7:7 What shall we say then? Is the Law sin? May it never be! On the contrary, I would not have come to know sin except through the Law; for I would not have known about coveting if the Law had not said, "YOU SHALL NOT COVET." 33 Rom 7:8 But sin, taking opportunity through the commandment, produced in me coveting of every kind; for apart from the Law sin is dead. 34 Rom 7:9 I was once alive apart from the Law; but when the commandment came, sin became alive and I died; 35 Rom 7:14 For we know that the Law is spiritual, but I am of flesh, sold into bondage to sin. 36 Rom 7:16 But if I do the very thing I do not want to do, I agree with the Law, confessing that the Law is good. The primary purpose of the law as I see it is to help us identify exactly what sin is and how repulsive it is to our God, read verse 7 again. Then we should be properly motivated to do whatever it takes to get it out of our lives. Of course, that's not possible, especially without the Lord's help. But whatever amount of sin we have in our lives, as long as we're His child, receiving His gift of salvation and staying within His Fellowship of Light as portrayed in 1 John we're in good shape to go to Heaven. 82 | What united Herod and Pilate? | Luke 23:12 | Country Girl | 124383
In the final analysis on Judgment Day, "trying our best" just aint going to be good enough, is it? Just as in the case with Pilate and Jesus, we are either for Jesus or we are against Him. I think it's a foregone conclusion that the whole world, past, present and future put Christ on that cross, unjustly so. But the big (most important) question for everyone now is: What do we do with Christ now? And then after answering that question with a positive, we have to act like we believe. The best end result of all this is that we have God's Grace. Remember even Pilate had his opportunity to repent and become a christian. Just like Judas, we're all given the opportunity to become a child of God and partake of His Forgiveness and His Grace. Another wonderful aspect of that Grace is the fact it keeps on working and cleansing us of our sins if we're faithful (Rev 2:10) and stay in the fellowship of God's light (1 John). So as long as we're in God's family, we are to keep trying our best and then God will cover the balance. What a wonderful deal from our Father. Good questions and blessings to you. Country Girl |

83 | Adultery by both parties. Divorce? | NT general Archive 1 | Country Girl | 124378
Matt 19:3 Some Pharisees came to Jesus, testing Him and asking, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for any reason at all?" Matt 19:4 And He answered and said, "Have you not read that He who created them from the beginning MADE THEM MALE AND FEMALE, Matt 19:5 and said, 'FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS FATHER AND MOTHER AND BE JOINED TO HIS WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH'? Matt 19:6 "So they are no longer two, but one flesh. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate." Matt 19:7 They *said to Him, "Why then did Moses command to GIVE HER A CERTIFICATE OF DIVORCE AND SEND her AWAY?" Matt 19:8 He *said to them, "Because of your hardness of heart Moses permitted you to divorce your wives; but from the beginning it has not been this way. From the beginning in the Garden of Eden to the present, God has ALWAYS preferred a couple to stay a couple after marriage. When both spouses in a marriage are guilty of adultery, this presents a problem. I think overall, the Bible stresses the importance of forgiveness whenever possible and it seems to me that both of you HAD FORGIVEN the other of these offenses in the past. A person could strongly argue that sins once forgiven are supposed to be forgotten and not brought up again. I'm not saying that you don't reap the consequences as we all do that but the blame for the sin and to rehash it again for yet another rouond of punishment is strictly against God's Word. BUT with all that said, as it has been mentioned many times on this Forum, this IS NOT the ideal place to get this kind of counseling. You and your husband really need to be counseled by another christian counselor, face to face. Hopefully, he will submit to such a wise course, if he truly cares about you and/or those kids. I'm a firm believer in the fact that it's our kids who suffer the most across America for the flippant attitude so many have about God's only other perfect insitution, that is marriage. It's the very foundation for successful living for this planet. I'll be praying for both of you, hoping that you can work it out and live a long together. My spouse and I have been married now for 28 years, first time marriage for both of us. We've had our struggles but we're determined to go to our graves together. Blessings to you. Country Girl PS: Just in case either of you is interested, you'll both probably live longer if you stay married. |

84 | Anger-Psalm 4:4 | Ps 4:1 | Country Girl | 124299
I just noticed with all this controversy about the versions of the Bible, no one has done a very thorough job of answering your question. Since we're all Bible students and dealing with anger is a tough topic, I'd suggest we should stick with God's Word in handling it. I would suggest we look to the one single instance where our Lord showed some anger. John 2:14 And He found in the temple those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers seated at their tables. John 2:15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; John 2:16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." John 2:17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME." And he showed this one single display of anger and NOT a single word or even a look of anger when He was beaten unmercilessly for no good reason before His crucifixtion. He was spat upon and tortured with a crown of thorns and many other abuses totally undeserved. The vast majority of the time like 99.9 percent of the time we humans get angry, it's for a reason far, far less worthy than our Lord's example, "His zeal for His Father's temple." I have to conclude that we all should strive to reduce the number of times we get angry and limit them to true instances of totally Godless injustice in the world. But then we must take care and make certain that we DON'T keep this kind of anger pent up inside us for a long extended period of time as it will just destroy our effectiveness as christians. Paul's words are very instructive in this regard Eph 4:26 "Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27nor give place to the devil. Hope this answers your question, at least a little bit. Blessings to you. Country Girl PS: Didn't want to dodge the Bible version controversy. I believe very strongly that the sum total of all the good, well-written, and thoroughly researched versions represent a very good complete Book of Guidance from God. We can take comfort that we do have ALL of what God wants us to know about Himself, His Son and all other matters eteranlly important to Him. As for myself, I prefer the NKJV and NASB, but as I mentioned there are several other good versions. I believe in 1611 and about 350 years thereafter, the KJV was a perfectly good version but now, it's been improved upon with the discovery of those manuscripts. I'm also confident there's very little changes of any significant consequence between the KJV and these more accurate, modern versions. |

85 | Why were Pilate and Herod enemies? | Luke 23:12 | Country Girl | 124295
I'm not sure how much credibility we can take from the movie, The Passion of Christ but Mr. Gibson's portrayal seems plausible. Apparently, there was some question to Herod's sexual orientation and thus his political views were in direct conflict with the straight forward politics of Pilate who seemed to have been a fairly reasonable ruler, considering his Roman background. After all, he did try his best to set Jesus free; it just wasn't politically expedient for him to do so. I'd like to think that the movie was based on Jewish history as much as possible. What do you think? Anyone else? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

86 | Explain Psalm 23 | Psalm | Country Girl | 124294
This has got to be at least one of the best, well-known chapters of the whole Bible, and most beloved. It seems very straight-forward and easy to understand, especially if you read the life of King David from the OT. How about making it easy for us? What specific verse or phrase are you having trouble with? The way you've worded your question, it sounds like a "homework assignment" from your Bible class. Surely, you wouldn't be doing that to us, now would you? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

87 | sunday as the sabath | NT general Archive 1 | Country Girl | 124215
Mark 16:2 Very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb when the sun had risen. Mark 16:9 Now after He had risen early on the first day of the week, He first appeared to Mary Magdalene, from whom He had cast out seven demons. Luke 24:1 But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. John 20:1 Now on the first day of the week Mary Magdalene came early to the tomb, while it was still dark, and saw the stone already taken away from the tomb. Can you think of a better reason to give Christ the preiminence He deserves since His Father gave it to Him? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

88 | What did Jesus mean by this remark? | Luke 22:68 | Country Girl | 124190
For context: Luke 22:65 And they were saying many other things against Him, blaspheming. Luke 22:66 When it was day, the Council of elders of the people assembled, both chief priests and scribes, and they led Him away to their council chamber, saying, Luke 22:67 "If You are the Christ, tell us." But He said to them, "If I tell you, you will not believe; Luke 22:68 and if I ask a question, you will not answer. Luke 22:69 "But from now on THE SON OF MAN WILL BE SEATED AT THE RIGHT HAND of the power OF GOD." Luke 22:70 And they all said, "Are You the Son of God, then?" And He said to them, "Yes, I am." Luke 22:71 Then they said, "What further need do we have of testimony? For we have heard it ourselves from His own mouth." If you go back and read the whole story as cited above, it becomes obvious that Jesus was emphasizing what in fact did happen just as He said it would. Thus He was emphasizing He knew the future and He knew they would not believe Him as they didn't believe Him when He was in the public eye performing unquestionable miracles. Blessings to you. 89 | evil heart of unbelief (Heb 3:12) mean | Bible general Archive 2 | Country Girl | 124056
If we go to verses 16-17 of that same chapter we get an answer to this question Heb 3:16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses? Heb 3:17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness? So we see a contrast between this kind of heart (essence of a person) in those that wandered the desert and that of King David for we know he was one of the greatest Kings that ever lived and was given one of the greatest compliments from God Himself, 1 Sam 13:14. We see further contrast of these two basic kinds of responses to God in Psalm 51 by King David. There we see what kind of heart God does want, one with humility, one that is contrite and submissive to God, not selfish and thinking only of how to get his next "fix" of power like we see in Pharaoh of Egypt. Blessings to you. Hope this helps. Country Girl |

90 | What is the "straight and narrow gate"? | Rev 19:8 | Country Girl | 124016
I think you probably have already figured out I was trying to say that Jesus "set a whole NEW standard for the world to imitate." I see your point as well as Angel's and Emmanus' points. Believe me, I'm not saying we can even come close to earning our salvation as there's ABSOLULTELY no way that can be done. But just like a good, loving parent invests his/her lifetime in a rearing a child or children and then hopes that child(ren) behave like they've been reared, in the same way our God wants us to behave like we've been bought and paid for by His Son. We should wear His Name somewhat proudly like Apostle Paul did while minimizing our measly acts of kindness as weak, feeble attempts to imitate Paul or even better Christ Himself. I don't think God keeps a score card on us and compares us to each other, again learning from our earthly parenting experience. He just wants us to stay in contact with Him through prayer and constant study of His Word because even the most mature christian needs a boost now and again to keep fighting the battle with the Devil and avoid the temptations of this world. As we mature in this spiritual relationship with our Father, we should realize our needs and priorities aligning themselves closer and closer with His. And then I think we'll realize more and more of His answers to our prayers. We should all strive to see things in this world as He does, listen to our fellow christians, seek to encourage them and love them in spite of their shortcomings and ask for their forgiveness for our shortcomings. Part of the unpleasant duties of a christian is to be an influence for good even to those that don't appreciate it. Sometimes we may even feel compelled by God to do what we can to correct some of the wrongs in this world BUT we MUST do so in love and show that we really do love people's souls like He does, without condition. We must show them over and over again and again, that whatever we say and do, we say and do so in the Name of the Lord. Your reference to John's words are good words as they make it plain that we are indeed dependent on Christ for His guidance and sustanance. Only by His representing us to His Father, can we hope to live with Him forever. But the toughest item of controversy as I've noticed it in the Forum is this battle between faith and works. As you've stated, our righteous acts counts as absolute zeros in the final judgments but that DOES NOT mean we should stop doing them. Jesus makes this very plain in the scriptures I referred to earlier. We MUST see ourselves as the debtor set free and go and share the good news, spreading the Word everywhere we go AND we MUST behave like we have a Father above watching us. He expects us to dispense acts of kindness and goodness not because we're earning our salvation but we must prove to the world we have it. Otherwise, how will the world know our christianity, our salvation is real and genuine? Hopefully, this may clear up some questions for you. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

91 | favor and grace | NT general Archive 1 | Country Girl | 123980
One of the best scriptures I can think of would be Eph 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, 4just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before Him in love, 5having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, 6to the praise of the glory of His grace, by which He made us accepted in the Beloved. 7In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace 8which He made to abound toward us in all wisdom and prudence, 9having made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His good pleasure which He purposed in Himself, 10that in the dispensation of the fullness of the times He might gather together in one all things in Christ, both which are in heaven and which are on earth--in Him. 11In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, 12that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. 13In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory. I think it might help to remember just how undeserving we really are by reading Is 64:4 For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him. 5You meet him who rejoices and does righteousness, Who remembers You in Your ways. You are indeed angry, for we have sinned-- In these ways we continue; And we need to be saved. 6 But we are all like an unclean thing, And all our righteousnesses are like filthy rags; We all fade as a leaf, And our iniquities, like the wind, Have taken us away. 7And there is no one who calls on Your name, Who stirs himself up to take hold of You; For You have hidden Your face from us, And have consumed us because of our iniquities. You see, you and I are used to thinking like humans. Generally, when we go to a court of law, we start thinking of all the reasons why we deserve some form of mercy. But in God's World of absolutely Perfect Justice, we don't deserve ANYTHING but death and eternal damnation. So now, you might begin to appreciate the extreme contrast between man's image of grace and God's Perfect Image of Grace. Thus, it's an ABSOLUTE FACT the ONLY way any of us will get to Heaven is by the Grace of God. Does this help? If not, let me know and I'll try again. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

92 | What consitutes a "righteous act?" | Rev 19:8 | Country Girl | 123972
I don't see how. Like I mentioned, we're following the lead of Savior. He set a whole standard of behavior for the whole world. I'm convinced if it hadn't been His influence in this world, it would probably have been destroyed again by now. It's just not in the nature of mankind to stay up with God's standard of doing anything decent and righteous for very long. We're just too prone to choosing the easier path as He talked about with the straight and narrow gate to Heaven. What do you think? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

93 | John 1:18-1 Cor 15:23,24 comparison | 2 Cor 5:8 | Country Girl | 123965
I'm looking forward to this discussion. Copied for context: Jn 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. 15John bore witness of Him and cried out, saying, "This was He of whom I said, "He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me."' 16And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace. 17For the law was given through Moses, but grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. 18No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him. 19 Now this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, "Who are you?" 20He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Christ." 21And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No." 22Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?" 23He said: "I am "The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make straight the way of the LORD,"' as the prophet Isaiah said." 24Now those who were sent were from the Pharisees. 25And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?" 26John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know. 27It is He who, coming after me, is preferred before me, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose." 28These things were done in Bethabara beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing. compared to 1 Cor 15:12 Now if Christ is preached, that He has been raised from the dead, how do some among you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 1 Cor 15:13 But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 1 Cor 15:14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain. 1 Cor 15:15 Moreover we are even found to be false witnesses of God, because we testified against God that He raised Christ, whom He did not raise, if in fact the dead are not raised. 1 Cor 15:16 For if the dead are not raised, not even Christ has been raised; 1 Cor 15:17 and if Christ has not been raised, your faith is worthless; you are still in your sins. 1 Cor 15:18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. 1 Cor 15:19 If we have hoped in Christ in this life only, we are of all men most to be pitied. 1 Cor 15:20 But now Christ has been raised from the dead, the first fruits of those who are asleep. 1 Cor 15:21 For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead. 1 Cor 15:22 For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ all will be made alive. 1 Cor 15:23 But each in his own order: Christ the first fruits, after that those who are Christ's at His coming, 1 Cor 15:24 then comes the end, when He hands over the kingdom to the God and Father, when He has abolished all rule and all authority and power. 1 Cor 15:25 For He must reign until He has put all His enemies under His feet. 1 Cor 15:26 The last enemy that will be abolished is death. 1 Cor 15:27 For HE HAS PUT ALL THINGS IN SUBJECTION UNDER HIS FEET. But when He says, "All things are put in subjection," it is evident that He is excepted who put all things in subjection to Him. 1 Cor 15:28 When all things are subjected to Him, then the Son Himself also will be subjected to the One who subjected all things to Him, so that God may be all in all. The conclusions from this discussions should be very interesting. What in particular do you draw from these two sets of scriptures? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

94 | Are "careless words" sin? | Matt 12:36 | Country Girl | 123807
I would have to say yes. We know from the many pictures painted throughout the Bible depicting Judgment Day, there's only going to be two groups of people: those who were faithful and kept their Lord as a high priority in their life and those that didn't. BUT I do think the Greek word for careless was a little more suggestive of sin than we mean in today's world. I'm certain our Lord doesn't mean for us, his children to NOT enjoy a good wholesome joke or to recognize humor in our world. We don't see Jesus in very many humorous situations but that's because he had such a serious job of saving the lost from a dying world and He had such a short time to wrap up His mission. Do you have any idea of the exact Greek word for "careless" and its full meaning? What are your thoughts on this matter? Blessings to you. Country Girl |
||||||
95 | Are careless words "sin?" | Matt 12:36 | Country Girl | 123798
Col 3:17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. With the words from Jesus and these words from Paul, it does seem the Bible is very clear that we as God's people should strive for this as a high priority in our lives. But I think that's also where Grace comes in, to make up for our shortcomings. As long as we really are genuinely giving God our very best, He'll meet us to make up the balance. Blessings to you. 96 | King James bible only one to read? | Genesis | Country Girl | 123709
The only item in the King James version that is obsessed with itself is the "authorization" by King James himself. He issued it and had it printed at the very front of the Bible. Of course, this was merely another man who was seeking to get yet another slice of glory, more than what was his due. The King James version is fairly good. It's last these 4 centuries and has done a marvelous job of promoting the English language. I take comfort in the fact that there is no such thing as an original authograph copy of God's Word, otherwise it would have turned into an item of worship. It's not the book itself, made from parchment, paper or modern bits on computer disc that's sacred. It's the fact that they actually are the very Words of God that is the original Thoughts/Message of God. Since the first day of their original authorship, man has been struggling with the copying and re-copying, interpreting and re-interpreting of God's Word. I believe for the most part, the vast majority of God's Word in the Bible is just as accurate as it was first recorded but one has to come to conclusion based on faith as it would be impossible to prove "beyond a shadow of a doubt." I think that's the way God prefers it. He wants us to accept Him and what He has to say on faith. The most important thing in this relationship is that we must obey God's Word if we really want to go to Heaven. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

97 | angry at Aaron and miriam | OT general | Country Girl | 123527
I can only assume you're referring to the following Num 12:1 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had married a Cushite woman); It looks as though you don't realize that the Jews were under very strict rules to keep the bloodline pure. Moses' brother and sister were upset with Moses for not adhering to that family tradition. But if you continue reading in that chapter, you'll see that God came down rather harshly on them but endorsed Moses. Many times we see that God takes many exceptions to man's traditions such as giving prominence to some other child other than the first born son. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

98 | Once | Bible general Archive 2 | Country Girl | 123522
This concept "once saved always saved" simply doesn't exist in God's Word. Among many other scriptures in support, one could cite Jesus' parable on the Prodical Son. There are many stories in the Bible depictinig God's people, including christians who sin and are rejected by one or more of the Apostles, representing God's rejection. 1 Tim 1:18 This command I entrust to you, Timothy, my son, in accordance with the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you fight the good fight, 1 Tim 1:19 keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. 1 Tim 1:20 Among these are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan, so that they will be taught not to blaspheme. 100 | Should a christian believe in destiny? | Bible general Archive 2 | Country Girl | 123514
I would recommend against it, our God gives us freedom to choose our ultimate desitnation for our soul and all the choices in between now and then. It sounds intriguing and attractive to follow someone else's advice to find our "destiny" but too often it leads to someone or something that doesn't really have our best interests at heart. In my opinion, it's best to stick with God and His Word. He and His Word are the ONLY things that are absolutely reliable and we can be assured that God does have our best interests at heart. There are many scriptures that could be cited but the best I could think of is from the wisest man that ever lived and he pursue every conceivable option known to man. Eccl 12:12 But beyond this, my son, be warned: the writing of many books is endless, and excessive devotion to books is wearying to the body. Eccl 12:13 The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. Eccl 12:14 For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. It would be wise for you to read the rest of this book. Blessings to you. Country girl. |
