22 | Who is the one holding back? | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 196792
1 Thess 4:14 For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. 1 Thess 4:15 For this we say to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord, will not precede those who have fallen asleep. 1 Thess 4:16 For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. 1 Thess 4:17 Then we who are alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord. 1 Thess 4:18 Therefore comfort one another with these words. Believers are taken off of the earth. Unbelievers are left on the earth. |

23 | what is leviticus 14 about... | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 196941
It is the law regarding Leprosy. Anyone with any mark of leprosy or any spot on their skin that might be leprosy was to go to the Priest and be checked out. The priest looked at the place on the skin and determined if it was indeed leprosy. The priest would be compare to our doctor today. The person had to make follow-up visits until the mark was gone and the end result would be to determine if it was indeed leprosy or not leprosy. If it was leprosy it was very contagious and that person was ostracized from society so that he would not spread the disease. Lev 14:54 This is the law for any mark of leprosy--even for a scale, Lev 14:55 and for the leprous garment or house, Lev 14:56 and for a swelling, and for a scab, and for a bright spot-- Lev 14:57 to teach when they are unclean and when they are clean. This is the law of leprosy. |

24 | Who were the firstborn? | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 196946
Taken from PreceptAustin.org on Colossians 1:15 Col 1:15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. THE FIRSTBORN OF ALL CREATION: prototokos pases ktiseos: "He is the Firstborn, the absolute Heir of the Father, begotten before the ages; the Lord of the universe by virtue of primogeniture, and by virtue also of creative agency" by Lightfoot Translated literally like the NASB does, it implies that Christ is included in the created universe, which is inconsistent with the context of the whole passage. The NIV translation paraphrases "of all creation" as "over all creation" which conveys more clearly the idea that Jesus is not created but is the Creator. Recognize that this verse is where many of cults come to hang out like vultures seeking unwary prey not equipped with the truth and the sword of the Word. First they read you this verse in Colossians and then take you to Luke 2:7 where the same Greek word is used to describe how Mary "gave birth to her firstborn ,or prototokos, Son and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn." The cultist, be they Jehovah's Witnesses or other genre of false teachers, then conclude that "firstborn" clearly implies that Jesus is the first of several children born to Mary as Scripture reveals there were other children born to her, and thus Jesus is in that sense the first created being. One can see how there is some logic ,albeit flawed as discussed below, to their argument. Firstborn ,4416,prototokos from protos equals first, foremost, in place order or time; rank dignity plus titko equals beget, to bear, bring forth, can mean first-born chronologically, Lu 2:7, but refers primarily to position, rank, priority of position and emphasizes quality or kind, not time with the idea of "preeminence". Prototokos is used 8 times in the NT ,Luke; Romans; Colossians 2x; Hebrews 3x; Revelation. Prototokos is also used of Jesus in Col 1:18, Romans 8:29, Hebrews 1:6 , and Revelation 1:5 albeit these uses are in somewhat different contexts so be careful not to be confused. Vine helps untangle these uses by pointing out that in Col 1:18 and Revelation 1:5 ,note, “firstborn” refers to His resurrection, in Romans 8:29 ,note, to His position in relationship to the Church, in Hebrews 1:6 ,note, to His Second Advent when the word “again” is place in the right place ,the Authorized Version gives a wrong translation, making the “again” seem to introduce a quotation, instead of signifying the second time when God will bring His Son into the world. In both Greek and Jewish culture, the firstborn was the son who had the right of inheritance. He was not necessarily the first one born chronologically. Although Esau was born first chronologically, it was Jacob who declared the “first-born” in regard to the blessing from Isaac, Jacob speaking to Esau said "First swear to me"; so he swore to him, and sold his birthright, Septuagint translates Hebrew with Greek word prototokos, to Jacob." Gen 25:33. Similarly, Jesus is the One with the right to the inheritance of all creation, cf. Hebrews 1:2, note; Rev 5:1-7. The nation of Israel was figuratively called God’s first-born in Ex 4:22 and Jer 31:9. Though Israel clearly was not the first people born, they held first place or the place of pre-eminence in God’s sight among all the nations cf Deut 7:7. Solomon was the preeminent son of David, although he was not the actual first born "Sons were born to David at Hebron: his first-born, Septuagint translates with Greek prototokos, was Amnon" 2Sa 3:2 In Ps 89:27. Spurgeon’s note, God says of the Messiah, “I also shall make him My first-born,” then defines what He means—“the highest of the kings of the earth.” In Revelation 1:5, note, Jesus is called “the first-born of the dead,” even though He was not the first person to be resurrected chronologically. Of all ever raised, He is the preeminent One. Romans 8:29, note, refers to Him as the firstborn in relation to the church. In all the above cases, firstborn clearly means highest in rank, not first created. In no way does the title firstborn indicate that Jesus is less than God. In fact, the ancient Rabbis called Yahweh Himself "Firstborn of the World" Rabbi Bechai as cited in Lightfoot. In addition, the rabbis also used firstborn as a Messianic title writing that "God said 'As I made Jacob a first-born, cf Ex 4:22, so also will I make King Messiah a first-born (cf Ps 89:27)." Rabbi Nathan in Shemoth Rabba, cited in Lightfoot A T Robertson adds that "The use of this word (prototokos) does not show what Arius argued -- that Paul regarded Christ as a creature like, all creation, . . . It is rather the comparative, superlative, force of protos that is used." |

25 | Who were the firstborn? | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 196947
A careful reading of verse 16 in context (of verse 17) indicates beyond question that Jesus, the First born, is Jesus the Creator "for by Him all things were created...". In his well known introduction, John writes that "In the beginning was, imperfect tense equals has no beginning and no end, the Word, and the Word was, imperfect tense, with God, and the Word was, imperfect tense, God. He was, imperfect tense, in the beginning with God. All things came into being by Him, and apart from Him nothing came into being that has come into being." ,Jn 1:1-3. So by repetitive use of the imperfect tense, John is saying that before there was a beginning there was the Word. The imperfect tense is used throughout this passage until Jn 1:14 where the tense is aorist, indicating an action at a specific point of time in the past. And so John records that "the Word became, aorist tense which means at a specific point in time God entered earth as a Man, flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth." Jesus had always been God and He continued to be God even when He "became" flesh, as is so beautifully expressed in a line from Charles Wesley's famous Christmas hymn... Hark the Herald Angels Sing by Charles Wesley Veiled in flesh the Godhead see. Hail the Incarnate Deity. Pleased as man with men to appear, Jesus! Our Immanuel here! 26 | Can women preach in today's society? | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 197584
Matt 28:17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Matt 28:19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, Matt 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." Mark 16:15 And He said to them, "Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. Mark 16:16 "He who has believed and has been baptized shall be saved; but he who has disbelieved shall be condemned. Luke 24:5 and as the women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, "Why do you seek the living One among the dead? Luke 24:6 "He is not here, but He has risen. Remember how He spoke to you while He was still in Galilee, Luke 24:7 saying that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again." Luke 24:8 And they remembered His words, Luke 24:9 and returned from the tomb and reported all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Luke 24:10 Now they were Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James; also the other women with them were telling these things to the apostles. Acts 1:11 They also said, "Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking into the sky? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in just the same way as you have watched Him go into heaven." Acts 1:12 Then they returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a Sabbath day's journey away. Acts 1:13 When they had entered the city, they went up to the upper room where they were staying; that is, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon the Zealot, and Judas the son of James. Acts 1:14 These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer, along with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers. Acts 2:17 'AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,' God says, 'THAT I WILL POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND; AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS SHALL PROPHESY, AND YOUR YOUNG MEN SHALL SEE VISIONS, AND YOUR OLD MEN SHALL DREAM DREAMS; Acts 2:18 EVEN ON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN, I WILL IN THOSE DAYS POUR FORTH OF MY SPIRIT And they shall prophesy. Your question is can women preach in today's society? The answer is yes. Preach in society in the sense of proclaiming Christ the Messiah. If you are looking for women in the church preaching that is a different story. Hope this helps. May God bless. |

28 | taking the name of the Lord in vain | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 200418
Pray for your co-worker and do acts of kindness for him. Some time after you feel you have established a rapore (?) with him - tell him in a kind way how much you love Christ and how it hurts you when you hear his name used that way and you wish he wouldn't do it in front of you. If he doesn't stop at least you know you took a stand for your Lord. Commit him into the Lord's hand and He will take care of it for you. Blessings, Val Oh and be sure and do it privately - not to embarrass him in front of other people. Ps 34:19 Many are the afflictions of the righteous, But the LORD delivers him out of them all. |

29 | How do I forgive adultry if it continues | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 202109
TJS Your statement "In this case, forgiveness is given with repentance, but repentance includes stopping the behavior that one is forgiven for. Their marriage is living in sin now, because they have not stopped the sin. By my read of the bible, two adultering spouses that marry are always living in sin, even if they ask for forgiveness it will not be given untill the sin is stopped." Please refer to the life of David the king of Israel 2 Samuel 11 and 12. Notice 2 Sam 12:13 Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die." At what point did the Lord take away the sin? Now look at 2 Sam 12:24 Then David comforted his wife Bathsheba, and went in to her and lay with her; and she gave birth to a son, and he named him Solomon. Now the LORD loved him 2 Sam 12:25 and sent word through Nathan the prophet, and he named him Jedidiah for the LORD'S sake. Notice the words the Lord loved him and named him Jedidiah. The Lord certainly forgave the adultery. We see in David's life consequences from this event the rest of his life as four of his children die. We know this because we read it in the bible. David's relationship with the Lord is restored as we see in his Psalms 51 and Psalms 32. Divorced people do not have to live under condemnation when they have repented and sought the Lord's forgiveness. David moved on with the Lord's blessing and so should we. A thorough study of David can be found at Precept.org - 1 and 2 Samuel Precept Upon Precept. Refocus and serve the Lord with gladness. Blessings to you - Val |

33 | Jesus and the ruling Powers | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 209155
You might want to contrast the character of Jesus who was sinless with the character of the ruling powers - the Sadducees and the Pharisees. You can do this by reading the gospels and marking each in a different color. Then writing out the specific characteristics of each. The nature of the Kingdom of God sounds like the contrast of the Sadducees and Pharisees wanted to keep their earthly "kingdom", power, etc. where Christ Jesus had a heavenly kingdom. You could contrast the earthly kingdom which was power, status, control, etc. with the heavenly kingdom which was holy, righteous, etc. Hope this helps - Val
34 | God Punished New Orleans with Katrina | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 209301
Yes I think so. I will tell you my reason why. I have studied the old testament in depth; not all of it but many books. Looking at the relationship that the Lord had with Israel I saw that they were blessed when they obeyed the Lord and they were cursed when they did not. Also looking at the pagan nations, I saw that the Lord punished them for their wickedness. Before the punishment the Lord always sent warnings. Plenty of them. There came a time though when the warnings stopped and the punishment came. Always the innocent suffered along with the wicked. The Lord has always had a remnant. He cared for them through the judgment. I do not have to fear because the Lord has promised that He will never leave me nor forsake me. In all circumstances I am to trust and obey Him. Bible passages: Genesis,Exodus,Leviticus,Numbers, Deuteronomy, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings, the minor prophets and the major prophets. Blessings, Val |

I recommend starting in Genesis and working my way through to Revelation. Each chapter builds upon another. An excellent in depth bible study is called Precept Bible Studies. They have their own website. Kay and Jack Arthur along with their staff have written these studes in the past 30 plus years they have been in the ministry. They also have classes across the U.S and abroad. You may check to see if there is a class near you. These classes suggest five hours a week homework. The class meets once a week. The first hour is devoted to class discussion of the homework. The second hour is a video presenting the material. The fellowship that you will have with other belivers is precious. The discussion helps you to understand and remember the truths of scripture. The NASB inductive study bible may be purchased at this site. Also Preceptaustin is a good site for excellent online free resources. Blessings, Val 2 Tim 2:15 Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth. |

36 | betrayed by a friend | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 210199
First you must confess your anger as sin to the Lord and ask for forgiveness. After a cooling off period when you feel you have your anger in control with the Lord's help call the person and tell them how much they hurt you. Express your forgiveness for what they did to you in whatever words you chose such as you don't hold it against them or whatever you feel appropriate. You could also tell them that you are holding them accountable and expect the funds to be repaid as that would be the right thing to do. During this time they may tell you why they did what they did and give you a better understanding of what they were thinking. You will feel better and have peace knowing you did what the Lord commands by forgiving this person and having this talk makes peace with them. Commit them into the Lord's hands to deal with their sin. You can then move on with your life and have a clean conscience knowing you did what you were suppose to do. Pray a lot about it and give yourself a little time for the hurt to mellow before you call them so you can control yourself. Blessings - Val Matt 6:12 'And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Matt 6:14 "For if you forgive others for their transgressions, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. |

Yes you are reading too much into this. There is a term in bible study called typology. Unless the bible says someone is a type we cannot say definatively someone is a type. The bible is very clear and in depth study keeps one grounded. There are many many names in the bible but having the same name as a biblical character is just that and thats all. I would encourage you to get in a good in depth study of the word.
38 | Sell what you have-give alms | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 212260
Luke 12:15 Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions." The subject is money. The amount is more than is needed. The warning is not to let money become our god. We cannot serve God and money. How do we avoid this natural tendency toward greed? Giving to those in need. There are also verses that say we are to owe no man anything so we would not sell all we have because that would make us indebted to others. We are to be responsible with our resources. Not greedy and hording an abundance. |

Dear Beja, I believe faith grows. A genuine faith in the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Let me give an example. Look at Lot and Abraham. Abraham was concerned you might say with the things of God. Lot on the other hand was concerned with the here and now yet Lot was a righteous man. Who had the "bigger" faith. I would say Abraham. Lot on the other hand had a lot of family and friend problems to the extend that they laughed at his faith. Sincerely, Val
