201 | what did he do to be replaced ? | Acts 1:23 | prayon | 125481
Greetings - Both passages are talking about the day that Christ rose. And when Jesus had risen early the first day of the Sabbath, He appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom He had cast seven demons (Mar 16:9). After that He appeared in another form to two of them, walking and going into the country (Mar 16:12) and Afterward He appeared to the Eleven as they recline (Mar 16:14) In the John passage it tals about Mary finding the empty tomb and then it says Then the same day at evening, being the first of the sabbaths(Joh 20:19). So both passages talk about the first visit of Jesus to the upper room. If they both didn't refer to the "first of the sabbaths" then it might be quite possible that Mark was talking about a later event. prayon |

203 | When was the Holy Spirit first given? | Acts 2:1 | prayon | 2124
Excellent point. Perhaps He needed to give them a taste of the Holy Spirit so they could carry on His work after He ascended into Heaven until the proper time came. To fulfill the prophecy of John the Baptist He still needed to baptize with fire which He did at Pentecost. I tend to agree with your opinion that their empowerment was not complete.
204 | what is the importance of tongues? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 148198
Greetings Kalois, on the first point (Acts 4) you are entirely right. It should of read Acts 2:4... my bad... Jud 1:20 But ye, beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, - Praying in the Holy Ghost (or in the Spirit) is praying in tongues. John 14:16,17 - Is debatable but this is the context I am coming from: Continuing to pray and worship in tongues helps us to be ever conscious of His indwelling presence. If I can be conscious of the indwelling Holy Spirit - as praying in tongues does - it is boind to affect the way I live. Romans 8:26 - At the same time the Spirit also helps us in our weakness, because we don't know how to pray for what we need. But the Spirit intercedes along with our groans that cannot be expressed in words. P. C. Nelson said that the here literally reads,"The Holy Ghost makes intercession for us in groaning that can not be uttered in articulate speech." Articulate speech means our regular kind of speech. James 3:8 Yielding your tongue to the Holy Spirit to speak with other tongues is a giant step forward fully yielding all of yourself to God, because if you can yield this most unruly part of your body you can yield any part. I hope that makes where I am coming from a little clearer kalos, prayon |

206 | Being filled w/ the Spirit mean tongues? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 148592
The bible says Simon "saw". We know that the Holy Spirit can not be seen with the physical eye since He is a Spirit. But he "saw" or witnessed the power of speaking in tongues If we look at Acts 19:6. (And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied)and Acts 22:4 (And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance) we know that with the laying on of hands and the receiving of the Holy Spirit (Acts 8:17 Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost) that they spoke in tongues. So what Simon "saw" was the evidence of the Holy Spirit which is speaking in tongues. prayon ps I agree it would of been much easier if he would of used the word heard instead of saw.... |

208 | how to be filled with the Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | prayon | 156530
Greetings Lionheart, You are so very correct! However, many people don't let it be simple. I have known people who pray for a few minutes and they don't think they have received it so they feel that they are not worthy of such a gift. They just give up. Or they may not feel comfortable with what the Spirit leads them to do so they think that "this couldn't be the Spirit". When I answer someone, since I don't know the person, I give the simplest, most basic answer I can. In Christ's love, prayon

210 | Did Gamaliel give sound advice? | Acts 5:34 | prayon | 7632
Gamliel's advice was sound in relation to what he believed. Gamliel was a honored and respected teacher of the law. He was renowned for his wisdom and tolerance. He was a leader of the liberal wing of the Pharisees - rabbi's who distanced themselves from the strictest interpretations of the law. We must note, however, that Gamliel was not a follower of Jesus Christ. The apostles had been brought the council. The high priest lashed out at the apostles (v. 28). The apostles calmly and courageously responded (v.29b-32), however, their reply angered and insulted the officials even more. They were enraged and ready to kill them (v. 33b). Without the Lord's intervention the aposltles would of probably been killed. God used the unbelieving Gamliel to diffuse the situation. His remarks, although not based on the gospel, showed great wisdom. His advise was sound. If we did disregard all the cults his advise would still ring true today. They would all be overthrown in the future because, as we know, they are not of God. This is pretty much what we are doing to day. We tend to not strongly attack the false religions because in this day and age we are not allowed to. (We would be denying them their free speech and the right to believe what they choose.) The main concern here is that those people who were lured into their false religions would be lost to the kingdom. We do fight mightily for those souls doing everything (?) in our power to show them the truth and lure them away from the false religions and this we must continue to do. prayon |

211 | Spirit Baptism | Acts 8:12 | prayon | 145082
Greetings Steve, Question: What does the progression have to do with whether it happens at the same time? And how do you explain that the Gentiles in Acts 11 received the spirit and spoke inn tongues when they had not been baptized with water? prayon

213 | Spirit Baptism | Acts 8:12 | prayon | 145230
Greetings Iktoose, Being baptized with the Spirit is like water baptism. You only need to be baptized once. After that the Spirit is active within you and you will experience the Holy Spirit working within you over and over. He can show Himself in many different ways. Sometimes I can be praising God in a room where it is extremely hot and I will start getting 'chill bumps' that start at the top of my head and go to the bottom of my feet over and over. Sometimes it will be by speaking in tongues. All of a sudden words will start coming out of my mouth and I have no idea of what I am saying or the meaning. Sometimes it is by feeling an overwhelming alarm that I shouldn't do something I am about to do like drive down a certain street. Sometimes I will get an urgent need to prayer for someone. When you are ask Christ to come into your life and you are 'saved' you receive the Holy Spirit. When you are baptized in the Spirit it is as if you give Him the permission or ability to totally take control of your life. I hope this makes sense. Feel free to ask me any questions. prayon |

214 | Spirit Baptism | Acts 8:12 | prayon | 145237
Greetings, I really worded that wrong, sorry. Yes they are 2 different things. When you are saved you give the Holy Ghost the ability to enter. For example, suppose you just bought a house and it did not have any electricity yet. You call the power company to turn it on. They send a member of the power company to turn it on for you. You have given them permission to come, but until you invite him into your house to turn the power on you do not have the power. Once you invite him in he is able to turn the power on. It is the same with the Holy Spirit. Once you have asked God for salvation the Holy Spirit has the right to come to the "door of your life' and knock, but until you invite Him iyou do not have His power. But once you invite Him and He enters you do not have the access to His power. I hope this make more sense. prayon I hope that makes it a little clearer. prayon |

215 | Simon didn't HEAR but SAW something | Acts 8:18 | prayon | 148621
Steve you and i could go round and round forever, but I am stopping it here. You believe that I am on dangerous ground and am making assumptions well if I am I am in some very good company - These people believe that the sign Simon saw was speaking in tongues- the same as I do: Albert Barnes (see his Notes on the Bible) John Gill ( See his exposition on the bible) Matthew Henry (see his commentary) Adam Clarke (see his commentary John MacArthur(see his study bible) Robertson (See Robertson's Word Pictures) These are some very wise and knowledgeable men whose work has been used for centuries. I doubt they are all wrong. prayon |

217 | Identical verses? | Acts 9:1 | prayon | 74265
Thanks Ray but what I need are identical verses. One of my instructors challenged us to come up with a verse in Acts that he can't tell us where it is found. We have found the only way to stump him is to find a whole verse that is repeated word for word or almost word for word. It is worth 5 points added on to our grade at the end of the semester........Something me and my old brain could very much use... ;o) prayon

220 | Why Saul to Paul? | Acts 13:9 | prayon | 4763
Hank, In bible times much emphasis was placed on the meaning of names, such as Abram to Abraham in Gen17:5. The name Saul means destroyer. Paul, however, means worker. Paul did go from being a destroyer to being a worker. prayon
