162 | Did he used vinegar to keep Jesus alive? | Mark 15:36 | mark d seyler | 177835
Hi Edd, The Bible doesn't clarify what this man's intentions were, so we can only guess. Many have thought the same as you do, that Jesus was offered this for medicinal purposes. Maybe he Was trying to keep Jesus alive long enough for Elijah to come and rescue Him! It's good, in my opinion, to think that he may have done this with kind intent, for "Love hopes all things". 163 | Is the Greek-English an older version? | Matt 24:7 | mark d seyler | 177812
Hi Justme, It just depends on which text it is using. There are a number of them in common use. The Nestle-Aland and the UBS texts are the same except punctuation and diacritical marks. The "Received Text" could be Stephens, Scrivner's, or others, and some use an eclectic text. So you could have a modern translation of a 17th century text, or you could have the very latest Majority Manuscript. Strong's numbering system was originally built around the King James Received Text, but has been revised and adapted over the years to several different texts, and says more about the usage and meaning of words than their appearance in certain passages. Which Greek-English NT do you have? Love in Christ, Mark |

164 | Matthew 24:7 missing word? | Matt 24:7 | mark d seyler | 177809
Hi Justme, You have guessed correctly! The Greek work loimoi, translated "plagues" or "pestilence", does not appear in the Critical Text as it does in the Majority Text and the Received Text. Of the corresponding passages in Mark and Luke, none of the major texts of Mark have this word, and all of them have it in Luke. So the inclusion of loimoi in Matthew does not add something to this teaching that does not belong, since it does appear in Luke, and the exclusion of loimoi does not cause Scripture to lose a teaching, since, again, it does appear in Luke. God bless you, brother! Love in Christ, Mark |

165 | what was deborah,s phenomenon at birth | Judg 4:4 | mark d seyler | 177804
Hi wbrinson, Many people were named due to the circumstances of their birth, but I am not aware of any stories concerning Deborah's birth. Some have suggested "Deborah" is a title. Fausset includes this observation: "a honey bee to her friends, a stinging bee to the enemy (Cornelius a Lapide)." But the Bible doesn't tell us if her name was prophetic, or simply a bee wouldn't go away as she was being born! Yikes! Love in Christ, Mark |

166 | What qualified Deborah as a judge | Judg 4:4 | mark d seyler | 177801
Hi flourmoyanna, All we are really told about this is that Deborah was a prophetess, and that the people of Israel went to her for judgment. It may have been as simple as that. Once people realized that she was speaking the Lord's words, they went to her. I've heard said that true leaders can be recognized because they have followers. I hope this helps! 167 | Tiered blessings????? | Eph 1:6 | mark d seyler | 177795
Hi bibster98, Ephesians 1:3-6 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: (4) According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: (5) Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, (6) To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. These words apply equally to all who are in Christ. We each have everything in Him, while none of us are able to add anything from ourselves. Isaiah 64:6 But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; There is no righteousness that I can have that you don't have, because nothing from myself is acceptable to God, and we both have Jesus' righteousness. So all believers have equal relationship with God, based entirely and soley on Jesus' righteousness, and acceptibility to God. Concerning why some prayers are answered and some not, are there things we can do or not do to increase the effectiveness of our prayers? Certainly! We can be obedient. 1 John 3:21-24 Beloved, if our heart does not accuse us, we have confidence with God. (22) And whatever we ask, we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments, and we do the things pleasing before Him. (23) And this is His commandment, that we should believe the name of His Son, Jesus Christ, and love one another, even as He gave command to us. (24) And the one keeping His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit which He gave to us. We can commit ourselves completely to God. 2 Chron 16:9 For the eyes of YHWH run to and fro in all the earth in order to be strong for those with their heart perfect (complete) toward Him. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

168 | The time of your visitation? | Luke 19:44 | mark d seyler | 177793
Hi Steve, I think that this passage a one example of many when the Lord does this, that salvation is offered, but if the offer is rejected, it may not be offered again. 2Th 2:9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 2Th 2:10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 2Th 2:11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie: 2Th 2:12 That they all might be damned who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness. For those who not receive the love of the truth will at this time, that is, following the rapture, receive a working of error, or strong delusion, and they will not be able to believe. The same was true of the Pharisees, in that, following their rejection of Jesus, they were no longer able to believe. And there are many examples of the same thing - rejection of Christ is sometimes followed by the inablitiy to believe. So while I do not think this passage specifically teaches this, it certainly exemplifies it. Love in Christ, Mark |

169 | Where/How to start reading the Bible? | Ps 119:11 | mark d seyler | 177792
Hi John, I thank the Lord for saving you, and giving you this hunger for His Word. I pray that you will hunger and thirst for Jesus, and His Word, more that any earthly thing! I would suggest to you to begin with the gospel of John: John 20:31 But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name. This is to secure you in your belief. I would then suggest Romans. This book will take you through: Man's sinfulness and inability to save himself, How God gives righteousness only through believing in Him, How His righteousness is something completely new and different in our lives, How His righteousness gives us a permanent relationship with God, and Our new way to relate to the world, to unbelievers, and believers. Romans 6-8 present the truth that Nothing of our flesh, or that which is ours by nature, has any possiblitiy of making us acceptable to God, while believing in Jesus, and receiving the life of the Spirit, makes us as acceptable to God as Jesus is, now and forever. I hope this helps! Please let us know how you are doing, and if you have any other questions. Love in Christ, Mark |

170 | Is it disrespectful to not use a title | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 177790
Hi Bereanian, Jesus spoke against titles: Matthew 23:8-11 But do not you be called Rabbi, for One is your Leader, the Christ, and you are all brothers. (9) And call no one your father on earth, for One is your Father, the One in Heaven. (10) Nor be called leaders, for One is your Leader, the Christ. (11) But the greater of you shall be your servant. How do you address a servant? Using honorifics? Generally not. God is so far above us, any supposed differences between us are completely insignificant. The truth is, what do we have that we did not receive? My pastor's name is Mark, and I call him Mark, and I don't believe that he would have it any other way. I wonder if those who have taken such titles to themselves have truly understood: Matthew 20:25-28 But having called them, Jesus said, You know that the rulers of the nations exercise lordship over them, and the great ones exercise authority over them. (26) But it will not be so among you. But whoever desires to become great among you, let him be your servant. (27) And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your servant; (28) Even as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many. 171 | who heard Jesus when he was alone to rec | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 177789
Hi oneratliff, The Holy Spirit heard Him. John 14:25-26 I have spoken these things to you, abiding with you; (26) but the Comforter, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He shall teach you all things and shall remind you of all things that I said to you. Here Jesus tells the disciples that there are some things He has told them Himself, but when the Holy Spirit comes He will teach them all things, even those things that the disciples were not present for. And also the Holy Spirit would remind them of those things they did hear for themselves. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

172 | will there be anouther angel rebellion | Rev 20:10 | mark d seyler | 177788
Hi oneratliff, The Bible does not, to my knowledge, specifically say that there will not be another angellic rebellion. But neither does it say there will be. But this we do know - that no such possible rebellion would have the same affect on mankind as the current one has had. Rev 21:4 And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. And death shall be no longer, nor mourning, nor outcry, nor will there be pain any more; for the first things passed away. Mankind, redeemed, restored, will no longer sin, and will be beyond sinning. But I think that there is a strong indication that there will not be another rebellion as there was in the past: 1 Corinthians 15:25-26 For it is right for Him to reign until He puts all the hostile ones under His feet; (26) the last hostile thing made to cease is death. If the last hostile thing that is made to cease is death, then all others must be previously ceased, and none more may occur after this. Death is the last. So based on this I do not believe that there will be another rebellion among the angels. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

173 | What does "Repent" mean? | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 177787
Hi Rusty.com, In the Old Testament, the Hebrew word used of man's repentance is "shub" (shoob), and means to turn. This is to turn away from wrong actions, from sins. In the New Testament, the Greek work is "metanoia", and this means to change your mind. These are in keeping with the Old Testament giving a covenant of works, and is focused on actions, while the New Testament covenant brings an internal change. I hope this helps! 174 | Rapture? | 1 Thess 4:17 | mark d seyler | 177621
These are the most commonly referenced Scriptures of the rapture: 1 Thessalonians 4:15-17 For we say this to you in the Word of the Lord, that we the living who remain to the coming of the Lord will not at all go before those who have fallen asleep. (16) Because the Lord Himself shall come down from Heaven with a commanding shout of an archangel's voice, and with God's trumpet. And the dead in Christ will rise again first. (17) Then we who remain alive will be caught up together with them in the clouds to a meeting with the Lord in the air. And so we will always be with the Lord. 1 Corinthians 15:51-52 Behold, I speak a mystery to you: we shall not all fall asleep, but we shall all be changed. (52) In a moment, in a glance of an eye, at the last trumpet; for a trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we shall all be changed. John 14:2-3 In My Father's house are many dwelling places. But if it were not so, I would have told you. I am going to prepare a place for you! (3) And if I go and prepare a place for you, I am coming again and will receive you to Myself, that where I am you may be also. Some also see the rapture in these Scriptures, although I believe these refer to the gathering of Israel: Psalms 50:3-5 Our God comes, and He is not silent; a fire shall devour before Him; and it shall be very stormy around Him. (4) He shall call to the heavens from above, and to the earth, to judge His people. (5) Gather My saints together to Me, those who cut My covenant by sacrifice. Isaiah 26:19-21 Your dead ones shall live, my dead body, they shall rise up. Awake and sing, dust dwellers; for the dew of lights is your dew; and the earth shall cast out departed spirits. (20) Come, My people, go in your rooms and shut your doors behind you. Hide for a little moment, until the fury passes. (21) For, behold, Jehovah comes out of His place to visit his iniquity on those dwelling on the earth. The earth shall also reveal her blood, and shall no more cover over her slain ones. Matthew 24:30-31 And then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the heavens. And then all the tribes of the land will wail. And they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and much glory. Dan. 7:13 (31) And He will send His angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather His elect from the four winds, from the ends of the heavens to their ends. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

175 | Meaning and application of 1Cor 9:27 | 1 Cor 9:27 | mark d seyler | 177611
Hi Philfromcal, I believe Paul is saying that he is not easy on himself, and is sometimes rough, to maintain mastery over his flesh appetites, lest at any time he would end up serving his flesh, and in so doing, cease to be able to serve the Lord. While we preach to others, and all the things we do to minister to them, we are all the more responsible to see to ourselves, that we do not allow sin the slightest foothold, and that we do not allow our bodies to rule over our spirits - the spirit is always to rule over the body. If what I have to do to accomplish this seems rough, so what? The prize is well worth it. Just as the boxer has to be hit to train himself to absorb a punch, so we need to deny our flesh, to learn how to live a life of denial of the flesh, to serve God. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

176 | Are all sins the same to God? | James 2:10 | mark d seyler | 177594
Hi Alifaye, James 2:10 For whoever keeps the whole law and yet stumbles in one point, he has become guilty of all. No matter what sin you commit, all sin is rebellion against God. Any sin you commit makes you guilty. Therefore, it makes no difference whether it is gluttony or murder. 2 Cor 10:12 For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding. We are mistaken when we compare ourselves with ourselves, or each other. Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, God compares us against Himself - we all fall short. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Socwork1, This is just a brief follow-up on my previous post. I just love how the Bible seems to anticipate every question! I came across this little gem: Psa 97:10 You who love YHWH, hate evil. He keeps the souls of His saints; He delivers them out of the hand of the wicked. This seems to answer that evil is still evil, but it is the LORD Who keeps us through it. Love in Christ, Mark |
