221 | Is this love? | 1 John 4:16 | mark d seyler | 175671
Hi young grasshopper, Many have grappled with this question for centuries, and to natural man there doesn't seem to be a good answer. But consider, the Lake of Fire was not created for the purpose of punishing mankind: Matthew 25:41 Then He will also say to those on His left, Go away from Me, cursed ones, into the everlasting fire having been prepared for the Devil and his angels. Satan, and those angels that followed him, existed in the very presence of God (Gen 18, 28:13, John 1:51, Rev. 4), yet they rebelled against Him. The result was that God prepared a place for them, the Lake of Fire, and decreed that at the proper time, they will be cast there. Remember that. The Lake of Fire was prepared for the Devil and his angels, not for mankind. God wants mankind to choose Him. But for those who refuse God, who only rebel against Him, God has not established a third alternative. There is only one other alternative, and its not a good choice. God demonstrated His love for us in that while we were yet sinners, in the very midst of our rebellion against Him, He died in our place, to satisfy the righteous requirement of the Law. It wasn't easy for Him, and He hated what He had to endure (see Hebrews 12), but He did it for us anyway, because He wants so much to spend eternity with us. That is love. Love in Christ, Mark |

224 | Biometrics and RFID technology is 666? | Rev 13:16 | mark d seyler | 175615
Hi babelonman, Since the ability to buy and sell is not contingent upon participation in this program, and since this program is not a mark upon the right hand or forehead which has been mandated by a world ruler, I do not believe that this is the "mark of the beast" prophesied in the Revelation. Now, it most certainly might be a forerunner to the mark of the beast, and as the world builds up its computer networks, ID programs, and socio-political control methods, we are getting closer to this. But if its not the actual mark, than its just not it. Many are asleep at the wheel, and they will have to answer to God for that. But there are many pastors actively teaching the entire Bible, including warnings against the mark of the beast, for those who ignore the gospel now. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

225 | How to spread Gods will Gods way | Acts 5:42 | mark d seyler | 175609
Hi Jason, The Book of Acts gives us numerous examples, a few are: Act 5:42 And every day they did not cease teaching and preaching the gospel of Jesus the Christ in the temple, and house to house. Act 18:4 And he reasoned in the synagogue on every sabbath persuading both Jews and Greeks. Act 17:17 Then, indeed, he addressed the Jews in the synagogue, and those worshiping, also in the market every day, to those happening to be there. In these verses, the apostles preached and witnesses in the Temple, in the synogogues, house to house, and in the marketplace. They went to where the people were, wherever they were. Jesus gave a very simple instruction on how to witness: Mark 5:19 But Jesus did not allow him, but said to him, Go to your house, to your own, and report to them what the Lord has done to you and had mercy on you. Jesus also tells us: Mar 16:15 And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. So what is the good news? That Jesus died, and rose from the grave, paying for every sin. That if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. Always remember: 1 Corinthians 3:6-11 (6) I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. (7) So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase. (8) Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour. (9) For we are labourers together with God: ye are God's husbandry, ye are God's building. (10) According to the grace of God which is given unto me, as a wise masterbuilder, I have laid the foundation, and another buildeth thereon. But let every man take heed how he buildeth thereupon. (11) For other foundation can no man lay than that is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Pray, then pray, and when you have prayed, pray. We are all called to be ready to give an answer for the faith within us, but we are not all called to be Billy Graham. The important thing is to follow as the Spirit leads, so that we are doing the particular work God wants us to be doing. Eph 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. God's got it all mapped out. We just have to follow His lead. Two things I would suggest for you to do. The first is to share your heart for witnessing with your small Bible Study group (if you are not in one, get in one, or start on), so that they can pray for you. The other is to check out www.wayofthemaster.com. I hope this helps, and I hope others will share also. Love in Christ, Mark |

228 | Role of men and women in church,equal- | Titus | mark d seyler | 175516
Hi Barbara, Titus, especially chapter 2, has a lot to say about the roles of men and women in the church. Also Paul's letters to Timothy. There are also numerous referrences scattered throughout the Scriptures showing both men and women praying in the church, prophesying, teaching, and more. Many believe that the top leadership role in a congregation (such as Senior Pastor) should only be given to men, based on verses such as in Titus 1:6. But there are even instances in the Bible that God has used women as the top leadership, such as Deborah judging Israel, and Priscilla (apparently) leading her home church. I would suggest that you begin with the letter to Titus, and just read through it to see how Paul writes regarding men and women serving in the church, and then read 1 Timothy chapters 2-3. My view is that God sets men to be the top leadership, and both men and women serve in all capacities under him, but that if there is not a man willing to serve the Lord, He can and does use women as top leadership also. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

229 | Woman who marrys divorcee an adultress? | Matt 19:9 | mark d seyler | 175514
Hi fredfred, This is not a cut and dried question, but depends on whether the divorce was Biblically based. The main issue is whether or not the divorced man is a completely innocent party to the divorce. It is also signifacant to question whether it is a good idea to marry someone who was previously married, and their marraige failed. No marriage should be entered into without serious prayer and counsel, and especially if one or both of the parties has been divorced. This is something that should be taken up with one's pastor. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

230 | where does the Bible tell about the 3 1/ | Dan 7:25 | mark d seyler | 175419
Dan 7:25 He shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High, and shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand for a time, times, and half a time. Rev 13:5 And the beast was given a mouth uttering haughty and blasphemous words, and it was allowed to exercise authority for forty-two months. Rev 12:14 But the woman was given the two wings of the great eagle so that she might fly from the serpent into the wilderness, to the place where she is to be nourished for a time, and times, and half a time. Each of these passages refer to a 3 1/2 year period of time, which is during the 2nd half of the 70th Week of Daniel. Dan 9:27 And he shall confirm a covenant with the many for one week. And in the middle of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the offering to cease. And on a corner of the altar will be abominations that desolate, even until the end. And that which was decreed shall pour out on the desolator. Following the Abomination that causes Desolation, there will be some Jews who will flee to the wilderness, and these will be protected. Those that do not will be persecuted by the antichrist, along with those relatively few gentile believers who will be saved during the 70th week. There is a lot more to this somewhat complex subject, if you have further questions, please let me know. Love in Christ, Mark |

231 | Does serpent mean literal snake? | Gen 3:1 | mark d seyler | 175416
Hi Jordan, These questions and more, my friend! The Bible speaks of this creature only as a serpent, a snake. Because it is cursed to live on its belly we can only imagine what it was like originally. Could serpents talk? Eve didn't seem surprised, but then, Balaam didn't seem surprised when his donkey talked to him. The Bible doesn't tell us much more than that. Jewish tradition is that the animals once could talk. We'll know more following the regeneration, and we can find out by talking to them and seeing if they answer back. Was this serpent the devil? From what the Bible says later, it would seem so. Rev 20:2 "And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years," Other times also the devil is refered to as the serpent, so our understanding is that this was the devil working through the serpent. That the serpent was cursed may even mean that it was complicit. This is getting pretty speculative, though, so I will end here. Love in Christ, Mark |

232 | Are movies that impersonate GOD good? | Ex 20:7 | mark d seyler | 175367
Hi l'homme humble, Ex 20:7 "You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. Using God's Name in a curse is only a part of this commandment. To "take the Name of the LORD your God in vain" is to "lift up" the Name of the Lord in an empty or meaningless way. When a moviemaker, writer, or gamer presents a character portraying God, but not as God actually is, this is taking the Name of the LORD in vain. This person will not be guiltless. Another thing to think about regarding this passage is for those who call themselves Christian, but in an empty or meaningless way. God will not hold them guiltless. But think about it - how would you feel if someone made a movie saying it was about you, but making a mockery of who you really are? Love in Christ, Mark |

233 | rapture or tribulation? | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 175267
Hi SuQ, There has been a lot of discussion on the rapture, which you can read by entering "rapture" in the search box. This will show you thousands of words which have been posted on this site. I believe the pre-trip rapture model, having studied it myself extensively. I would be happy to discuss this with you, on this forum. As there are many who do not believe this view, if you wish, we could discuss this over email (markdseyler@yahoo.com). Concerning the similitudes in the Scriptures: During the flood, Noah was divinely protected, remaining on the earth, during the time of worldwide judgment. Enoch was removed prior to the judgment. Noah is considered similar to Israel, which will be divinely protected during the Great Tribulation. Enoch is considered similar to the church, which is removed prior to that time. There is another interesting passage, in Daniel 3. King Nebuchadnezzar constructs an image of gold, and commands everyone to worship it, upon pain of death. Three Hebrews refuse, and are cast into the furnace of fire. They are divinely protected during this experience. But the interesting question to ask is "Where is Daniel?" Certainly he would not have worshipped the image. Presumably he was out of town. But the Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego become similar to Israel, divinely protected, while Daniel is as the Church, absent. Regarding the trumpets, if the feasts are being celebrated during the millenium, trumpets will continue to be blown, and that aside, can we say that the 7th trumpet in the Revelation will be the last one ever sounded? So we are looking for a series, and the last of the series. There is another series in Numbers 10:1-4, the first calls one side to readines, and the last calls the other side to readiness. So when the last trumpet sounds, the entire camp is to prepare to move. The coming wrath of God is the only worldwide judgment since the flood, so we really don't have any other examples. Points 4 and 5 I agree with you completely. Let me know what direction you would like to go. Love in Christ, Mark |

234 | how to rightly divide the Word? | Num 31:17 | mark d seyler | 175260
In discussing cultural contexts to Scripture, remember that we are merely speculating on why a particular command was given to a particular people. I think you are correct regarding your thoughts on the expectations between boys and girls at that time, in that place. I do tend to think of this as pre-emptive self-defense. To answer your question, I think a very strong indicator is to look at the type of passage, for instance whether it is narrative or didactic, and the context in which it occurs. A narrative of the wilderness wanderings of Israel that contains a specific command for a particular battle does not carry the same personal application as a didactic passage concerning the conduct of the believer in the the New Testament. There are also these kinds of statements in the Old Testament, such as: Micah 6:8 "O man, He has declared to you what is good. And what does Jehovah require of you, but to do justice, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?" When you are talking about these orders issued by Moses, consider that the Bible declares of him: Numbers 12:6-8 (6) And He said, Now hear My words, If your prophet is of Jehovah, I will make Myself seen by him in an appearance; I will speak to him in a dream. (7) It is not so with My servant Moses! He is faithful in all My house. (8) I speak to him mouth to mouth, and by an appearance, and not in riddles; and he looks upon the form of Jehovah. So why have you not been afraid to speak against My servant, against Moses? One other thought I have on this topic. We are not neccessarily talking about "cultural expectations", since God knows the future. He may well have known that these boys would grow up to be warriors against Israel had they been allowed to live, and chose to take them home to Him instead. Love in Christ, Mark |

235 | guiding principles? | Num 31:17 | mark d seyler | 175255

238 | How to honor estranged parents? | Ex 20:12 | mark d seyler | 175243
Hi Gloria, I'd like to add to Doc's answer if I may... In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus taught in a number of ways that the intent of the Law was the matter of the heart. I'm sure you've heard this before, hatred is murder, lust is adultery, and so on. Look at this commandment in that way. "Honor your father and mother" as a condition of your heart. Don't let their bad behavior gain victory over your desire to live in such a way as to make them proud, even if they neither see nor recognize nor acknowledge such a life. As if, should they come to the Lord 10 years from now, they would be able to look at your life, and say, "in spite of all we did and didn't do, still you have done well!" Keep your willingness to serve them in the Lord even though they only want to take from you. But "in the Lord". I understand, from my own family background, the difficulty with this kind of relationship. My father was sometimes abusive, most times absent, and occassionally, rarely, a good father. My mother was very abusive, manipulative, and after she died, and I was able to see in her scrapbooks, I realized that she had serious mental problems. And while we need to recognize when a relationship is unhealthy, and damaging, and we need to be absent from it, we mustn't live our lives in rebellion to our absent parents. In our hearts we harbor good will towards them, true Christian love - devotion to their wellbeing - that manifests itself, if not while present with them, in our prayers for them, earnestly desiring their salvation, and wholeness, and reconciliation. And should the opportunity arise that you might find an open door to mend the relationship, be quick to try - trusting in the Lord, because "love hopes all things". I will pray for you! Love in Christ, Mark |

239 | Where was Jesus during death? | 1 Pet 3:19 | mark d seyler | 175239
Ephesians 4:7-10 (7) But to each one of us was given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. (8) Because of this, He says, "Having gone up on high, He led captivity captive," and gave "gifts to men." Psa. 68:18 (9) But that He went up, what is it except that He also first came down into the lower parts of the earth? (10) He that came down is the same who also went up above all the heavens, that He might fill all things. This passage tells us that the One Who ascended into heaven first descended into the lower parts of the earth. Some will tell you this simply means that He descended to the earth, but this says "lower parts". That expression is never used of the regular portions of the earth, such as where we live. Acts 2:24-35 (24) But God raised Him up, loosing the throes of death, because it was not possible for Him to be held by it. (25) For David said as to Him, "I always foresaw the Lord before Me, because He is at My right hand, that I not be moved. (26) For this reason My heart rejoiced, and My tongue was glad; and My flesh also will dwell on hope, (27) because You will not leave My soul in Hades, nor will You give Your Holy One to see corruption. (28) You revealed to Me paths of life; You will fill Me with joy with Your face." LXX-Psa. 15:8-11; MT-Psa. 16:8-11 (29) Men, brothers, it is permitted to say to you with plainness as to the patriarch David, that he both died and was buried, and his tomb is among us until this day. (30) Being a prophet, then, and knowing that God swore with an oath to him that of the fruit of his loin, as concerning flesh, to raise the Christ to sit on his throne, see Psa. 132:11 (31) foreseeing, he spoke about the resurrection of the Christ, "that His soul was not left in Hades, nor did His flesh see corruption." LXX-Psa. 15:10; Mt-Psa. 16:10 (32) This Jesus, God raised up, of which we all are witnesses. (33) Then being exalted to the right of God, and receiving the promise of the Holy Spirit from the Father, He poured out this which you now see and hear. (34) For David did not ascend into Heaven, but he says, "The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at My right hand (35) until I place those hostile to You as a footstool for Your feet." LXX-Psa. 109:1; MT-Psa. 110:1 This passage lends agreement with Ephesians, telling us that the Christ would not be "left in Hades". Now, I am not saying that Jesus "suffered in hell", as we would think of it. I believe that He was there to "proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound;" (Is. 61) 1 Peter 3:18-22 (18) Because even Christ once suffered concerning sins, the just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God; indeed being put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the Spirit; (19) in which also, going in to the spirits in prison, He then proclaimed (20) to disobeying ones, when once the long-suffering of God waited in the days of Noah, an ark having been prepared, into which a few, that is, eight souls, were saved through water. (21) Which antitype now also saves us, baptism (not a putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; (22) who going into Heaven is at the right of God, the angels, and authorities, and powers being subjected to Him). This passage has been interpreted in a number of ways, but I find it very interesting that this "preaching to the spirits in prison" is reported immediately following Jesus's death, and before His ascent into heaven, in agreement with Ephesians. So based primarily on these Scriptures, I believe that when Jesus died, He went to announce to those in Hades His victory. This is based on the straightforward reading of these passages, accepting as symbolic or figurative only that which Scripture clearly defines as symbolic or figurative. I recognize that some disagree, and I offer this as my view, without any interest to debate this issue. Love in Christ, Mark |
