143 | Can Genesis geneologies be trusted? | Ps 12:6 | mark d seyler | 178111
Hi MKWR, We can trust that the genealogical information throughout the Bible is 100 percent accurate. There has never been any historical or archeological discovery made that contradicts the Biblical genealogical records. With that being said, we also know that not every genealogy in the Bible is complete, in that it contains the name of every single person within the ancestral line. As we compare genealogies in Matthew, Ezra, Chronicles, and Kings, we know that some generations were skipped in some genealogies. This lets us know that there is the possibility that certain names may have been skipped over in any of them. So we know for a certainty, for instance, that Jesus is a descendant of David through Nathan, we cannot guarantee that the genealogy contains the complete record of every generation. We know for certain that Jesus is a descendant of Adam, but again, not that every single generation is named. I hope this helps! Please let me know if you have any further concerns about this. 144 | Books in Bible "The Law","The Prophets"? | Mal 4:4 | mark d seyler | 178087
The first five books of the Bible, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy are commonly thought of as the Law, while the last 17 books, Isaiah through Malachi, are considered the Prophets. However, Jesus referred to passages in both Isaiah and Psalms as the Law: John 10:34 Jesus answered them, "Has it not been written in your Law, 'I SAID, YOU ARE GODS'?[Ps. 82:6] 1 Cor 14:21 It is written in the Law, By men of strange languages and by the lips of foreigners will I speak to this people, and not even then will they listen to Me, says the Lord. [Isa. 28:11-12] So perhaps His definitions were broader than some others. Love in Christ, Mark |

146 | God spoke using Deborah | Judg 5:12 | mark d seyler | 177971
Hi Noveta, This is one of those topics that seems to be a hotbutton for dissent, but here is what I believe. In the NT, salvation comes by faith in Jesus Christ, that God raised Jesus from the dead, and confessing Jesus' lordship. (Romans 10:9) That God raised Jesus from the dead declares Jesus' sacrificial offering was accepted, and suitable for its purpose. (See Acts 13, and 17:30-31) Romans 6:8-11 But if we died with Christ, we believe that also we shall live with Him, knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dies no more; death no longer lords it over Him. For in that He died, He died to sin once for all; but in that He lives, He lives to God. So also you count yourselves to be truly dead to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. This is true confession, literally "saying the same thing." It is agreeing with God, that Jesus is our Lord. So coming into right relationship of obedience with Him, believing He has the power, right, and will to forgive our sins and give life, we come to Him. John 1:12-13 But as many as received Him, to them He gave authority to become children of God, to the ones believing into His name, who were born not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but were born of God. We receive Him, we are made children of God, born again. 1 Peter 1 gives a great discussion of how this occurs, as God puts His living Word inside us as a Seed, reproducing Jesus' life in us. 2 Corinthians 5:17-18a So that if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new! And all things are from God, Gal 2:20a I have been crucified with Christ, and I live; yet no longer I, but Christ lives in me. We know that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit now live in us. (See John 14) We are declared "already seated in the heavenlies", being "accepted in the beloved". Ephesians 2:4-6 But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even we being dead in deviations, He made us alive together with Christ (by grace you are being saved), and raised us up together and seated us together in the heavenlies in Christ Jesus, Colossians 3:3-4 For you died, and your life has been hidden with Christ in God. Whenever Christ our life is revealed, then also you will be revealed with Him in glory. Rebirth, God’s indwelling, acceptance into heaven, are possible because sin was paid for. But while Jesus' sacrifice put away sins, the animal sacrifices did not do that. Hebrews 10:1-4 For the Law had a shadow of the coming good things, not the image itself of those things. Appearing year by year with the same sacrifices, which they offer continually, they never are able to perfect the ones drawing near. Otherwise, would they not have ceased to be offered? Because those serving did not still have conscience of sins, having once been cleansed. But in these there is a remembrance of sins year by year, for it is not possible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. You never read in the Old Testament of the Father, Son, or Holy Spirit indwelling believers. Re-birth is only prophetic, something yet future. And their sins were not “put away”, only “covered”. Read Jeremiah 31:33-34 “After those days, declares YHWH, I will put My Law in their inward parts, and I will write it on their hearts; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. And they shall no longer each man teach his neighbor, and each man his brother, saying, Know YHWH. For they shall all know Me, from the least of them even to the greatest of them, declares YHWH. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sins no more.” Ezekiel 36:24-27 “Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh. And I will put my spirit within you” This is what God does in re-creating us, but these were prophetic, and not yet accomplished in the time they were written. The OT faithful are never said to live in heaven with God, but were with Abraham, in the depths of the earth (Luke 16). Until the perfect sacrifice was made, their sins were covered, not put away, and they were not yet elgible for rebirth, for the indwelling of God. And as Jesus said, unless a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of heaven. I believe that the OT faithful, as they believed God’s promise of deliverance, according to the revelation God had given them, were credited with righteousness, but not born again. When they died, they went to the place of comfort, not torment, but only after Jesus died were they able to enter heaven, and receive the new spiritual life. Love in Christ, Mark |

148 | Barak faith in Deborah or God | Judg 5:12 | mark d seyler | 177965
Hi Noveta, You've asked a very good question! When you look at those named in Hebrews 11, many of them had major downfalls, times that they were not acting according to faith. But this is the grace of our God, that He remembers the good, and not the bad. Ezekiel 18:21-22 But the wicked, if he will turn from all his sins which he has done, and keep all My statutes, and do justice and righteousness, living he shall live; he shall not die. (22) All his transgressions that he has done, they shall not be recalled to him in his righteousness which he has done; he shall live. And so with these, there works of faith are what is accounted to them, not their works of unrighteousness. And so it will be with us as well. 1 Corinthians 3:12-15 And if anyone builds on this foundation gold, silver, precious stones, wood, grass, straw, (13) the work of each will be revealed; for the Day will make it known, because it is revealed in fire; and the fire will prove the work of each, what sort it is. (14) If the work of anyone which he built remains, he will receive a reward. (15) If the work of anyone shall be consumed, he shall suffer loss; but he will be saved, but so as through fire. Jesus saves us, and being saved, we are His forever. One of the effects of being re-born is that we now want to obey our Lord more and more. And as we struggle with accounting the "old man" dead, one of the factors to consider is that one day everything we did on our own will be burned away, and everything we did in the Lord will remain. How much do you want to remain? Even though Barak was weak in the way you have said, he nonetheless went to battle. And as the Lord had said, the victory was credited to a woman, but Barak still received credit for the part he played. We are commanded to serve. Even if we only serve a little bit, we still receive for what we did. But better to serve will all we have. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

149 | explain Pride to me | Dan 4:17 | mark d seyler | 177933
Hi Ginger, Pride is, quite simply, thinking of oneself more highly than one ought. There is a great deal that can be said about pride, but for simplicities sake, I would like to suggest that you read Daniel chapter 4, of King Nebuchadnezzar. Pay special attention to the decree given against him, and his statement once he was restored. Pride is lying to self, and sets us up to commit any number of sins, or to omit any number of good works. The proud are the opposite of the one described in 1 Cor 13. But take a look at Daniel 4, and let me know what you think. Love in Christ, Mark |

152 | What is Dominion Theology? | Luke 18:8 | mark d seyler | 177925
Hi Aspilos, Here is a quote from Wikipedia regarding Post-Millenial Eschatology: "In Christian eschatology, postmillennialism is an interpretation of chapter 20 of the Book of Revelation which sees Christ's second coming as occurring after or post- the thousand year "millennium". Although some postmillennialists hold to a literal millennium of 1,000 years, most postmillennialists see the thousand years more as a figurative term for a long period of time (similar in that respect to Amillennialism). Among those holding to a non-literal "millennium" it is usually understood to have already begun, which implies a less obvious and less dramatic kind of millennium than that typically envisioned by premillennialists, as well as a more unexpected return of Christ. Postmillennialism also teaches that the forces of Satan will gradually be defeated by the expansion of the Kingdom of God throughout history up until the second coming of Christ." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postmillennialism) Dominion Theology describes that movement that desires to make this happen. This theology has been taught through the centuries, by a variety of churches and denominations. Here is from Wikipedia regarding Dominion Theology: "Dominion Theology is derived from the Biblical text where God grants humankind "dominion" over the Earth. It is influenced by postmillennialism, a view of the End Times which believes that godliness will eventually pervade secular society (some so-called "Golden Age postmillennialists" believe the present age will culminate in a literal one-thousand-year period of virtual heaven on earth, a millennium) before Jesus returns in a Second Coming." (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dominion_Theology) I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

153 | What is the doctrin of election? | Bible general Archive 3 | mark d seyler | 177923
Hi Rusty, History has shown us that this question will generally result in 2 answers, yes, and no. It depends entirely on what you believe about the doctrine of election. On the one hand, many profess that God has preselected those who will be saved, and those not preselected will not be saved. On the other hand, many others profess that God gives the opportunity to all to be saved, and those who chose salvation will be saved. On the one hand, the "elect" are chosen to become "in Christ". On the other hand, the "elect" receive Christ's election along with receiving his sonship and inheritance and etc. when they become "in Christ". To easily partake of the many and involved discussions of this topic that have taken place on this forum, simply enter "election" into the Search Words box at the upper right. It will show you all posts that contain that word. If you click on the heading of a post, it will show you the thread. This will not only give you hours and hours of reading material, but will aquaint you with the arguments many have presented. I hope this helps! If you have further questions, please let me know. 157 | Does the Bible predict Christianity? | Luke 18:8 | mark d seyler | 177884
Hi Aspilos, Actually, the Bible tells us much the opposite will happen. Luke 18:8 "I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find faith on the earth?" Jesus questioned whether faith would even be found on the earth when He returned. Paul wrote to Timothy that the times would grow worse, with those (2 Tim 3:5) "holding to a form of godliness, although they have denied its power;" He later wrote, (2 Tim 3:13) "But evil men and impostors will proceed from bad to worse, deceiving and being deceived." Jesus said of the end times, (Matt 24:4-5) "And Jesus answered and said to them, "See to it that no one misleads you. For many will come in My name, saying, 'I am the Christ,' and will mislead many." Peter as well, (2 Pet 2:1-2) "But false prophets also arose among the people, just as there will also be false teachers among you, who will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the Master who bought them, bringing swift destruction upon themselves. Many will follow their sensuality, and because of them the way of the truth will be maligned;) Peter also wrote of the last days, (2 Pet 3:3-4) "Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, "Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation." Jesus compared the end times to the times of Noah, in which only eight people escaped judgment, and to the destruction of Sodom, in which even fewer escaped. So the Bible foretells deceipt and false prophets, that men will be lovers of themselves and not lovers of God (2 Tim 3), mocking the believers, persecuting, and so on. Evolution will be taught instead of creation. "Will He find faith on the earth?" I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

158 | Does Romans 3:10-11 Include the Saints? | Rom 3:11 | mark d seyler | 177882
Hi Jim, Interesting question! By "Saints", I will assume you mean the "regenerate", since you referenced John 1:12 and Romans 8:16. I would answer, no, this passage in Romans 3:10-11 is not refering to the saints, but is refering to the unregenerate, those who have not been re-born. Rom 3:9 What then? Are we (Jews) better than they (gentiles)? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are all under sin; Rom 3:10 as it is written, "THERE IS NONE RIGHTEOUS, NOT EVEN ONE; Rom 3:11 THERE IS NONE WHO UNDERSTANDS, THERE IS NONE WHO SEEKS FOR GOD; Paul's context for this quote is in vs. 9, that this is of those who are "under sin", in keeping with the context in the Psalm 14:2-3 "YHWH has looked down from heaven upon the sons of men To see if there are any who understand, who seek after God. They have all turned aside, together they have become corrupt; There is no one who does good, not even one." "They" are the sons of men. The Saints, as you pointed out, are the sons of God. This is further established as well: 2 Cor 5:17-18 Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come. Now all these things are from God, 2 Cor 5:21 He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him. Eph 4:24 and put on the new self, which in the likeness of God has been created in righteousness and holiness of the truth. Gal 2:20 "I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

159 | Should fornicators be leaders in church | Eph 5:3 | mark d seyler | 177849
Hi Bereaniam, I never want to be in the position of second guessing what the leadership of a congregation, of which I am neither a leader, or even a member, is doing or not doing. These will be accountable before God. If you believe that they are in sin, pray for them, as if you were praying for the life of your child. I would not knowingly support someone in a church leadership position who I knew was living in unrepentant in sin. But to answer your question, the elders and pastor should handle this in the way that the Holy Spirit directs them. Nothing more, nothing less, and I don't know what that is, because I am not inside of that situation. But for those of us who are not appointed by God as leaders in the church, we must pray pray pray for our leaders. I know I haven't exactly answered your question, but I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |

160 | Does God hear me when I pray? | Eph 1:6 | mark d seyler | 177840
Hi jalanlambert, Let me answer your question with a question, if I may be so bold :-) Does God hear the pray, "show me my sin"? Isn't this when we most need God in our lives, helping us, when we are struggling with sin? Is this the time He turns His back on us? Do we sin sins of which we are not aware? You are correct - all sins, past, present, future, are forgiven, and put away. Paul wrote to the Ephesians "we are accepted in the Beloved." Some may answer this question quoting Psalm 66:15, "If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me." Given the verb tenses, many translations read (as the ESV) "If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened." JFB refer to this as "see iniquity with pleasure". And while we do sin, even though we are born again, "cherishing sin" is rather inconsistant with "a new creation." We have been created after true righteousness and holiness, and we cherish God, not sin. That notwithstanding. . . 1 John 3:18-21 My little children, let us not love in word, or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. (19) And in this we shall know that we are of the truth, and shall persuade our hearts before Him, (20) that if our heart accuses us, we know that God is greater than our heart and knows all things. (21) Beloved, if our heart does not accuse us, we have confidence with God. If we have not dealt with current sin, well, have you ever tried to have a conversation with a friend in your living room while there is an elephant in the room? Its rather difficult to actually have a relationship until the elephant is taken care of. And that is what sin is like, in my view. If we are ignoring sin, rest assured that God is not, and will be constantly calling it to our attention until we give in. He will chastise us if He needs to. It will not just go away. But neither will it overcome the death of Jesus, the perfect Lamb of God, Who takes away the sin of the world. Love in Christ, Mark |
