161 | have to speek in tounges to be saved? | 1 Cor 14:22 | glory777 | 63128
Amanda- Johnny answered correctly. No where does it say in the bible that you have to speak in tongues to be saved. Salvation only comes through the the belief of Jesus' death on behalf of your sins and by your recognizing it as such and asking Him to be Lord of your life. Speaking in tongues is a gift, but I know many who are saved and do not speak in tongues. Tongues is a special "prayer language" that is only for the believer himself. It is private communion between the speaker and God and the speaker doesn't have a clue what he is saying. Sometimes it is just a need to use it (I believe it is an intercessory thing at times) and sometimes it is used when there are no words that are adequate in private praise and prayer. But for salvation - no. Debbie |

Hi- I have been with the forum for a while, and if you will look at the answers given by those who answer the most, you will see that there is definitly NOT one opinion of most anything that is 100 percent agreed upon (unless you are asking about the Way for salvation!). We are all people, some with a lot of knowledge and others (like myself) with a limited amount but with hearts that want to help others to grow in the Lord. God bless you- Debbie |

163 | Is there a Heaven? | 2 Cor 5:6 | glory777 | 7147
My heart goes out to you, and I cry for your hurt. But I can't cry for the children. They are with the Lord, they were not of an age to consciously choose to do what they knew was against Him. As to the others who were older...Were they born again? That is the crucial question. If they weren't, the Bible says in John 3:3 that you have to be to go to Heaven. What is even harder, is if you don't know. I lost my mother a few years ago, and I to this day do not know if she ever came to the saving heart knowledge of Jesus Christ. I gave her the knowledge, but I never knew if she made a decision. I pray she did. And I have to ask God still to give me peace about this. And He does. I think the problem with us, is we see death through mortal eyes and not God's eyes. Our lives seem to go on and are so special to us. This world is not good, we have crime, sickness, pain and death. Actually, death is a blessing because it is taking us to be with God to be truly changed and to be all we were meant to be. Our time here is to be used serving the Lord and rejoicing in Him until He calls us to Him. If there really is a God, and we know there is, then we know that God is truth and His word is true. God says there is a Heaven, so there is. Stick close to your Bible. I found the Psalms so helpful and keep praise and worship music around you. It is so hard to rejoice at a time like this, but I found the verse Neh. 8:10 to be so helpful and the song that I had to keep playing and really worshipping to was "Shout to the Lord" by Darlene Zcheck (sp). I hope they help you. |

164 | Are we Justified by the law of Moses? | 2 Cor 9:1 | glory777 | 13178
Johnny- Although tithing is not a requirement for salvation, the old testament was given for our learning also. One tenth is a portion that was used then, and it was just as important to the pople then as a tenth is now. The promises God gave His people Israel are also now ours, through Christ. And some basic principles hold true. What you give you will receive. Do you believe that the Lord will follow through on His promises? He says to test Him in this. But it does depend on where your heart is about it. I heard that the word "cheerful" as in cheerful giver could be translated "hilarious". I love the idea of being so glad to give back to the Lord what He has given that you are hilarious about it. If one is looking at the principle just for the idea of payback or to become richer in money, that is the wrong attitude. Again, Jesus stressed all along that it is the position of the heart. When in doubt, the tithe is a good rule of thumb. Debbie |

165 | Tithing | 2 Cor 9:1 | glory777 | 13286
Johnny- Tithing per se was not taught by Jesus. But He did commend the widow that gave to the temple her dinas (?) all that she had. He also never taught that the Sabbath should be kept. However, there are things that the old testament gives us that we can apply to our lives. When Abraham brought the tenth to Melchizedek (a type of Christ)it was setting an example. However, the recommendation of Jesus to the widow shows that we should give even more. My church believes the tithe is basic for a standard of giving. For myself, I believe the tithe is basic. It is the least I can give. Other denominations believe go with what your heart says. Jesus is the fulfillment of the law, His Blood was shed as the end to sacrifice and law. But that doesn't mean that we should thrwo out everything waht was taught in the Old Testament. The Sabath, too, was given to man, for God wanted a day to bless us and knew we needed to have that one day set aside to focus on Him and to have a change in our weekly lives for refreshing. So do we need to give, so we can be blessed. Debbie |

166 | Examine yourselves! | 2 Cor 13:5 | glory777 | 7308
The biggest thing for me is that I find I am able to see others more in the light of how God sees them. And it is not that I succeed, but that I know I have to try. Forgiving was the hard one for me. But I find, that the more I forgive, the more I am able to forgive. Just having the Holy Spirit there, pricking my spirit, is something that I never had before I came to Jesus.
167 | What is a generatonal curse? | Gal 1:9 | glory777 | 11511
I think today, people would call it "trends" or "bends". Characteristics that are passed down from one generation to the next. Can they be demonic? Where do the nasty things of the world come from? I believe it could be a possibility, but who is stronger, God or the devil? Rom 8:37 "But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us." I know I had a problem with anger and rebellion. Looking back, I see that it was a generational thing. My mother had this, and she got it from her parents. I did not want to pass this on, it was not congruent with being a follower of Christ. I had to turn the problem over to the Lord, repent of the sins, renounce any control satan had over this area of my life. I fould Scripture to counteract these area and used them, as Jesus did in the wilderness. I have seen a change. Others have seen a change. There are times when I am tempted (fewer), but I have the Word of God always with me, and anger does not control me. There are other problems that are "family" problems. Alcoholism, promiscuity, etc. I do believe, that with the power of the Holy Spirit you can overcome anything that interferes with your walk with the Lord. |

169 | Catholics and Heaven??? | Eph 2:8 | glory777 | 11179
I believe a Catholic can go to Heaven. But not by anything he can do. Not through baptism, masses, communion or other sacraments can you be saved. No one can pray to get someone else into Heaven. This is a personal decision only the individual can make. If a person, regardless of what denomination they are, realizes their sinful state, repents of it, and asks Jesus Christ to come into his heart, acknowledging that He died for their sins and asking Him to be Lord of their lives will they go to Heaven. That is the being "born again" experience Jesus talks about. Unfortunately, the Catholic church also teaches things that causes the people to lose fellowship (not salvation) with the Father. Among those is praying to Mary and saints. I don't believe that if you are a member of any particular church that it automatically gains you admission to Heaven. You have to have that personal relationship with God that only comes from being born again. |

170 | type of wood the cross is made of | Eph 2:16 | glory777 | 31508
I read a long time ago as a child, in a magazine, that tradition has it that it was made out of a dogwood tree, which at that time grew very tall and strong. Because the tree felt so bad about being used in that way (for our Savior's death) God changed it's growing habits to be twisted and never usable for that purpose again. It's flowers would have four petals in the shape of a cross with indentations in each to represent the nails. In the center of each would be the part that would represent the crown of thorns and would be ruddy in color for the shed Blood of Christ. I know this is not biblical, but I can never look at a dogwood flower without thinking of the sacrifice our Lord made for me. Debbie |

171 | what does the scripture 1 Thes 4:16 mean | Phil 1:23 | glory777 | 44215
muffie- When the rapture occurs, we will not all be dead. The sisters and brothers who have died in the past will have their bodies transformed and leave the graves to join with their souls. Then those who are alive will also join the Lord (their bodies transformed in the process I believe). The Lord created us to have bodies, along with our souls, and I believe He intends for us to have bodies as a complete being, just as Jesus does now, only transformed as His is. Those who are dead and died "in Christ" are with Him, only not their bodies. At the judgement seat of God, rewards will be given. If you read throughout Paul's letters, he talks of crowns. There is the soul-winners' crown, etc. I think these are the rewards that are given and the judgements that are given to those who have been covered by the Blood. Their sins will not be seen for they are not there. Those who have not accepted Jesus will be judged according to God's standard of righteousness, and of course, without the covering of Jesus' blood will be found guilty. Debbie |

172 | proof that Jesus is God | Col 2:9 | glory777 | 27526
Dawn- Another one is Col. 1:16-17. Also John 17:5, 24. He was referred to in the Old Testament many times also. See Proverbs 8:22, 23, 30. Peace in Christ- Debbie |

173 | Satan's Power (2:18) | 1 Thessalonians | glory777 | 10005
God is Soveriegn. Satan can only do what God allows him to do. He is the accuser of the saints (you and me) but thank Jesus for His blood that negates any accusation. Satan can't be all places at once, God is. Satan can't read our minds (although he sure can read body language), God knows every thought we have before we think it. Satan can't make us do anything. He can tempt us, but with the Holy Spirit sealing us and Jesus blood covering us he can never take away our sonship. The evil one can use a bad situation to try to break us, but God will use the brokenness to reveal His strength and glory and show Himself supreme. It may look like Satan has the upper hand at times, but we have to look at the long picture. We have authority over him, and we already have the victory through Christ. If he can fool enough people that he is in control, he thrives on it. He is a liar and the father of lies.
174 | why men struggle - being head of house | 2 Timothy | glory777 | 9533
Unfortuantely, I think it is in large part because of the culture we live in. As we drift away from the Bible and God being the focus, we replace our focus with "me". Women think of submission as being unequal and don't understand the importance of the role as "helpmeet". So their is a striving for control. Men don't take on the role as spiritual head of house and if they heard that they were head of the house, they don't understand the biblical function of the head of house. If both of these roles are understood before marriage, a lot of problems would not crop up. This does not apply to all men and women, understand, but those that do not have solid biblical knowledge of the plan of God for the family. Debbie |

175 | What difference does it make who wrote | 2 Tim 3:16 | glory777 | 62145
It does help to understand the way the scriptures were written if we know who did the writing. Yes, all of the scripture was written by the inspiration of God, but some "inconsistancies" are explained by the knowledge of who wrote the scriptures, to whom they were originally intended and the time that they were written. Customs change, language changes and these also need to be taken into account when reading scripture, especially those parts that are hard to understand. Debbie |

176 | Can I trust this Pastor? | Hebrews | glory777 | 16854
Jensen- I agree with all who have written to answer your question. As you study and learn, you are going to find differences in thinking on some of the small issues, but as you read, you will see there are guidelines to follow and basic principles that are fundamental. I know that I could go to any one of the churches represented by those who contribute knowledgably to this forum and feel comfortable and fed by the Word. Debbie |

177 | The word of God? | Heb 4:12 | glory777 | 67813
Searcher123- Faith is a weak answer for people who do not have it. What can prove it is fact. I do not remember the exact number of prohesies that are in the bible - I know it is hundreds - but every one has come true except for those dealing with the end times. Many of them were written hundreds of years prior to the fulfillment. If these were given by the inspiration of God, I will bet my soul that the rest is. I feel my future is more secure resting in the words of the bible than what the world offers. Debbie |

178 | What can we learn from Jesus' encounter | Heb 4:15 | glory777 | 62062
Jesus was tempted in many of the ways we are tempted on this occasion. He also was tempted in the ways that Adam and Eve were tempted, only He won back the rulership of the world by not falling as they did. Now we can claim the victory based on what He won. He also showed us how to overcome temptation. Memorizing scripture is a prime defense against the enemy. Debbie |

179 | Am I still a sinner? | Heb 10:14 | glory777 | 13161
Bill Mc- I'm kind of jumping in here, but I hope Nolan will add to it. As far as salvation, the Father sees us in Christ as His child. Look on a human family. I am still my dad's child, I always will be my dad's child, but I did do things that were wrong and broke fellowship with him. The same with our Heavenly Father. Yes, as long as we are human, we will be saints who sin. We will be saints who break fellowship with the Father (hopefully less and less often as we grow to be more Christlike), but as long as we get our "feet washed" through confession and repentance, we can reestablish fellowship with our Father. HOpe this helps. Debbie |

180 | How to do good work plus get to church | Heb 10:25 | glory777 | 42423
suziebiddle- Man, I can relate! Only, eliminate the therapy and put in a 40 hour plus week and I know where you are. It is hard to try to wear so many hats. But I have found, if you do not have the time to spend with God, everything else gets harder to do and you seem to have less time for all of them. The main thing is to prioritize. God has to come first. Would it be possible to take the kids with you to church? I also have my grandson (3 years old) living with me, so I know the housework definitly falls behind. And do you know what? No one worth worrying about has complained. Seems like you need a great amount of peace, my friend, and who is the Giver of peace? Set aside even 15 minutes in the morning before anyone is up (the only time I can give it) to read a little and spend time with the Peacegiver. It will pay off in all other areas of your life. Debbie P.S. I can't wait for the end of time just to focus uninterruptedly on one thing also! God bless. |
