161 | Where the priest impatient and greedy? | 1 Sam 2:13 | Val | 206118
Eli's sons were interrupting the priests in their offering to the Lord. They were not to take the meat until the priest had prepared the fat for the Lord. By their doing this, they were eating the fat. A word study on "fat" shows it was to be the Lord's part. A reading of Lev. 10:1-7 shows how serious offense this was. In essence the behavior was not regarding the Lord as Holy. A reading of 1 Samuel 2:29-36 shows the Lord confronting Eli about this situation. It seems Eli may have been eating the fat as well because he was very fat. For this he and his sons were told what their judgement would be and again in 1 Sam. 3:13. 1 Sam 3:13 "For I have told him that I am about to judge his house forever for the iniquity which he knew, because his sons brought a curse on themselves and he did not rebuke them. What they were doing poking the fork in the pot was taking the fat which was the Lord's. They were taking the meat from the pot. The Lord gives instructions and if those instructions are not followed there are consequences. This same truth applies today. God judges sin. Eli failed by not rebuking his sons. As a consequence his sons die on the same day and Eli falls and dies when he hears the news. The ark is taken by Israel's enemies thus the whole nation suffers. 1 Sam 4:15 Now Eli was ninety-eight years old, and his eyes were set so that he could not see. 1 Sam 4:16 The man said to Eli, "I am the one who came from the battle line. Indeed, I escaped from the battle line today." And he said, "How did things go, my son?" 1 Sam 4:17 Then the one who brought the news replied, "Israel has fled before the Philistines and there has also been a great slaughter among the people, and your two sons also, Hophni and Phinehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been taken." 1 Sam 4:18 When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell off the seat backward beside the gate, and his neck was broken and he died, for he was old and heavy. Thus he judged Israel forty years. Blessings, Val |

163 | Why was God unhappy with Cains offering? | Gen 4:5 | Val | 206015
Cain did not submit to God's leadership. He wanted to come to God his way. We must come to God, God's way. God saw Cain's heart and was and is able to judge rightly something that you and I cannot do. Only God can judge a person's motives because He can see inside our minds. He knows what we are thinking all the time and why we do the things we do. He is the only one able to give a just judgement. We also see death of an animal. This shows the need for a blood sacrifice. That there is no forgiveness without blood. It shows the awfulness of sin. That Cain's sin was so hurtful to God that because he still wanted a relationship with man, and because of God's holiness for man to be cleansed there had to be a death because forgiveness is in the blood. A poor little lamb had to be sacrificed for sin. It is a picture of our Lord Jesus Christ who gave the perfect, supreme sacrifice. He is the lamb of God that takes away the sins of the world. We need to have a right heart attitude and accept this sacrifice by putting our faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. Abel apparently understood and submitted to God whereas Cain did not and was in rebellion showed by his offering of vegetables. People today are much like this. We think we can come to God in any way we chose. We cannot. There is only one way to God. That is through his Son and His finished work on the cross. We are covered by His blood for the remission of our sins when we submit and bow the knee to Him as our Lord and Saviour. 1 John 3:12 not as Cain, who was of the evil one and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his deeds were evil, and his brother's were righteous. Jude 1:11 Woe to them! For they have gone the way of Cain, and for pay they have rushed headlong into the error of Balaam, and perished in the rebellion of Korah. Blessings, Val |

164 | Isa 6:9-10 translated differently in NT? | Is 6:9 | Val | 205917
John 12:40 - So the first fatal cause of unbelief is the activity of God's sovereign hardening of Israel prophesied in the Old Testament and designed by God to bring about salvation in the death of Christ and the building of His own church. You say, "Well, that's not fair for Israel. They're just a victim of God's sovereignty." No, because then he gives the other side of the coin. Here's the second cause of unbelief, not God's plan, but personal choice. Look at it in verse 42. "Nevertheless," isn't that an interesting word? Fantastic! "Nevertheless," what does that word mean? That means "Even in spite of the sovereignty of God..." Did you get that? Even though God had sovereignly blinded and hardened the nation Israel, nevertheless they were individuals. Here is free will on the part of man, choice, operating within the sovereignty of God. God's sovereignty over national Israel, yet individual choice. "Nevertheless, among the chief rulers also many...what?...believed on Him." You say, "Hey, terrific, a revival!" No. "But because of the Pharisees they did not confess Him lest they be put out of the synagogue for they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God." - John MacArthur You might want to read the entire sermon in its entirety. He stresses that God's spirit does not always strive with men. In other words, there is a time of grace. If we neglect that time there comes a time when one cannot believe because of the hardness of ones heart. Blessings, Val |

Isaiah 6:9-10 - The Lord is sending Isaiah to preach to a people who will not respond. He asks how long will he have to preach to them and the Lord gives the answer in verse 11 Then I said, "Lord, how long?" 170 | sons of Korah | Gen 36:5 | Val | 205767
There are six different descriptions of people called Korah, Korahites, and Korhites. They are as follows: 1. The son of Esau by Oholibamah, the daughter of Anah, the son of Zibion the Hivite (Gen 36:5,14,18;1 Chron 1:35). 2. The son of Eliphaz, the son of Esau by Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite (Gen 36:16). 3. The son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi (Ex 6:21,24) who rose up against Moses and Aaron with 250 leaders of the congregation charging them with exalting themselves above the assembly of the Lord, Numbers 16, 26, Deuteronomy 11:6, Psalm 106:16-18. 4. The son of Hebron, son of Mareshah, son of Caleb, son of Hezron, the son of Perez whom Tamar, the daughter in law, bore to Judah (1 Chron 2:43) 5. The grandson of Kohath, son of Levi (1 Chhron 6:37), Psalms 42-49, 84, 85, 87, 88 are given the superscription as "belonging to the Sons of Korah." It is probable that these originated among this guild of singers and were perhaps, sun by them in the worship of the Temple. In 2 Chronicles 20:19 when Jehoshaphat came before God,"the Levites, the Kohathitites and the Korahites, stood up to praise the Lord". Shallum, one of the gatekeepers appointed by David, was also a descendant of Korah. 1 Chronicles 9:19,31. 6. Five of the men from the tribe of Benjamin who joined David at Ziglag were called Korahites (1 Chron 12:6), which suggests the possibility of Korah also being a geographical name. 171 | Scripture above scripture? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Val | 205523
Hello WOS, There is a guideline I guess you would call it that there are some obvious things in scripture. These are well understood. We are to interpret the difficult passages, those things that are not well understood, in light of the obvious passages. Also there is a guideline that we do not build doctrine on difficult passages. One example might be the handling of snakes. Most of us think thats not a good idea. Blessings, Val |

174 | water to wine? | John 2:1 | Val | 205516
Dear stoneslinger, It is my understanding that the miracles the Lord done were to show that He was who He said He was. We see this in His message to John the Baptist when John was in prison. We see how this particular miracle came about when we look at the manners and customs of weddings of this time period. Timing is important for the Lord did everything according to will of the Father. Since He did this for His mother I personally believe it shows His great love for her. Perhaps His answer to her showed her that His miracles would not be something that could be asked for again. They would be done in His timetable. When the scriptures do not explictly explain something or the event is not covered in cross references, anything outside of the written word is speculation. We should always remember that when we read what people say about scripture. That is why we should study scripture for ourselves so we will know exactly what scripture says and what goes beyond scripture. Blessings, Val |

175 | Was it the influence of | Ex 33:11 | Val | 205481
Dear Barry: I think you can find the answer in the verses you cited. Look at verse 11. The Lord used to speak to Moses face to face. "Just as" is a term of comparison. The comparison is that the Lord spoke to Moses directly just as you might speak to your friend directly. We know that Moses would tell the people what God said so Moses had a special relationship with the Lord. One that the people did not have. You have a special relationship with your friend and speak to him directly. You might tell others what your friend says but you are the one who has the special relationship. Face to face means they spoke directly to one another as you and your friend speak directly to one another. Verse 9 explains how the Lord appeared to Moses: in the pillar of cloud. Ex 33:9 Whenever Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would descend and stand at the entrance of the tent; and the LORD would speak with Moses. Very interesting. Blessings, Val |

176 | No Fruit? | John 15:8 | Val | 205417
Steve, Reading Chapters 14, 15 and 16 the context is before Christ's dead. Verse 25 says "These things I have spoken to you in figurative language; an hour is coming when I will no longer speak to you in figurative language, but will tell you plainly of the Father." Christ's talks about believing in Him and about keeping His commandments in these chapters. So my question is, is the fruit He is talking about would that be believers who believe as a result of their going and telling the message of Christ's death, burial and resurrection? Respectfully submitted, Val |

If you do a word study on Asaph, Heman and Jeduthun you will see they were chosen to start the choir so to speak. You will see many of their songs in Psalms. As for women you might want to do a word study on song or songs. That might be good starting point. 1 Chr 25:1 Moreover, David and the commanders of the army set apart for the service some of the sons of Asaph and of Heman and of Jeduthun, who were to prophesy with lyres, harps and cymbals; ...
