102 | Question between John 6:44 vs John 12:32 | John 6:44 | Val | 212518
Dear Charlie, there is a multitude of commentaries at Preceptaustin.org. You can search the commentaries by verse. Just enter the verse in question, scroll down and you will see what the classical commentors said as well as modern day scholars. Because the book of Romans explains that all creation has an innate knowledge of God, man is without excuse. Also God has put within his creation, the world we live, the knowledge that He is the one who created everything on earth, in the heavens and underneath the heavens. One of the things that the Holy Spirit does is convict the world of sin. World meaning each of us individually. What we read in Romans that man, people individually, ignore this conviction or they recognize it is from God and seek Him. Romans specifically says that anyone who ignores this conviction is without hope. This is what makes one's heart hard and hard to reach. This is why we are to live for God when we are young because the older we get the harder our hearts, our conscience becomes to sin and eventually our conscience becomes seared, in other word we have no conscience for the wrongs we do, the wrongs being those things that God has said is immoral, stealing, adultery, etc. This type of person does not care for God or the things of God. Even the person who does seek God and listens to God's convicting Holy Spirit, if he does not read and study the bible, obeying the Lords commands and instructions written there, he will not be following the light the bible sheds. This is much the problem of our modern day church today. People rely on a twenty minute sermon once a week to be their guide. Often the speaker with take one verse and build a commentary around it rather than reading the word of God itsself as the prophets did to Israel. Also in the synagogues they read the scriptures. Christ draws us to himself through his death, burial and resurrection. All of us who have heard his story and those who have not see it in creation and their innate knowledge that God gave them. All people are drawn. All people are given plenty of chances to surrender to God. When people die without having surrendered to God, they have no one to blame but themselves. They didn't listen to God speaking to them through creation, through their consciences, through the spoken word, through the experiences of life such as death of a loved one. There is hope for anyone who will surrender to Jesus who came to rescue us from our sins and give us a heavenly home with Him. If you are worried about someone in particular that they are not drawn, you can pray for them and tell them the gospel story of how much God loves and wants to have a relationship with them. When I saw Jesus there on the cross and how much He suffered for me, that he could have called ten thousand angels to rescue Him but instead endured the death on the cross, it was at that moment that I saw why he died, because of my sins. I saw how much He loved me; enough to die for me. There was no sin in Him; I saw my sin next to Him and it broke my heart. I said God if you are really out there, I want you to be my Savior, I want to follow you. I bring myself and all my sins to you. I am not ashamed of Him anymore. I was raised in a christian home but was always ashamed because of how we were made fun of, church-goers. I am not ashamed anymore. I will tell anyone, anywhere, anytime about what Christ has done for me. Happy New Year, Val |

103 | salvation for unbelievers? | Rom 1:20 | Val | 212450
The bible is clear that God has put within every person an inate understanding of who He is. If the person acts on this understanding God will reach him with the gospel. It is the person's failure to act on the light he has been given that is the problem. We look at the character of God that he is holy, pure, just, righteous, can do no evil that we see that it is our misunderstanding of these mysteries rather than that somehow God is wrong or unfair. The gospel has reached China. They have been exposed to the gospel. I believe the whole known world was reached with the gospel by the Apostle Paul. John 3:16 and 17 says we were condemned already. Christ came to rescue us. You can help with the spreading of the gospel in China by supporting missionaries in that region. Blessing - Val
104 | Why do I want to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 13:1 | Val | 212375
I suppose one of the most controversial movements in the church today is that called the charismatic movement. I do not like to use the word use the word "charismatic" for a movement that stresses just one or two gifts of the Spirit, for all the gifts of the Spirit are charismatic. In First Corinthians 12 the apostle clearly says that every Christian has one or more charismatic gifts. I would prefer to call this group we are observing in the church now the Pentecostal movement, or, perhaps even more accurately, the glossolalia movement. The term glossolalia comes from the Greek glossa, the tongue, and lalia, to speak and is the more accurate term for this group because it stresses speaking in tongues. This movement relies heavily upon the closing verses of Mark's gospel for biblical support of its views. These verses refer to the signs that accompany those who believe: casting out demons, speaking in new tongues, healing the sick, picking up serpents, drinking poison, etc…. The key to this passage is the word "believe." That emphasis is in line with the thrust of Mark's gospel because this gospel does not present Christianity as just a nice story... It stresses the fact that the death and resurrection of Christ is something to be believed, and it is intended to change lives. As we act on our belief, it changes us. The emphasis here is on the belief of these apostles whom Jesus was to send out into all the world with this great story…. Now when he rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene... She went and told those who had been with him, as they mourned and wept. But when they heard that he was alive and had been seen by her, they would not believe it. Mark 16:9-11 RSV Immediately, the writer underscores the fact that these disciples, when they heard of Mary's experience with Jesus, did not believe it … Afterward he appeared to the eleven themselves as they sat at table; and he upbraided them for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen. Mark 16:14 RSV It is evident that Mark wants us to understand what a climate of persistent and stubborn unbelief prevailed among these disciples after the resurrection... Knowing the pressure that would be brought against these apostles to get them to deny this supernatural event, our Lord now goes on to give them certain signs which will accompany and encourage them in preaching the gospel. This climate of unbelief is the setting in which Jesus promises these signs in Verse 17, "And these signs will accompany those who believe: in my name they will cast out demons; they will speak in new tongues; If they pick up serpents, and if they drink any deadly thing, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will recover." Mark 16:17-18 RSV It is easy to read this as though Jesus means these signs will accompany everyone who believes and preaches the gospel. Unfortunately, the text makes it appear this way, and this is how this passage has been understood by many. As you go about preaching the gospel, these signs will immediately confirm that the faith of those who believe is genuine. But the amazing fact is that for twenty centuries millions of people have been converted and have believed the gospel, and none of these signs have appeared. There have been claims that these signs have been manifested in certain instances, but if this is what these words meant, then these signs would be everywhere. Every time a person became a Christian, some of these signs would be manifested. Therefore, they ought to be the most frequent occurrence in all Christendom. But the truth is, they are very rarely, if ever, seen. Now what does this mean? Well, it means, of course, that we have misunderstood this passage if we read it that way. It does not square with what God actually does…. Now the Apostle Paul did all these things. He cast our demons, spoke in new tongues, was accidentally bitten by a poisonous snake...unharmed...He had power to lay hands on the sick, and they were healed; and he did it again and again. This is what he means when he writes in Second Corinthians 12:12: "The signs of a true apostle were performed among you in all patience, with signs and wonders and mighty works." These, then, are the signs of an apostle. They were authenticating signs to accompany those who first went out with the gospel into an unbelieving and hostile world. We have this confirmed, I think, by the final paragraph. So then the Lord Jesus, after he had spoken to them, was taken up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went forth and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them [the disciples] and confirmed the message by the signs that attended THOSE SIGNS FOLLOWING by Ray C. Dear Crystal, "willfully sinning" means one has no intention of stopping. You have been given some good scriptures and comments. Find yourself a christian mentor, preferably a woman family member or friend. Find a good bible believing church and participate with like minded believers who can help you grow and support you in being accountantable to Christ. Spend much time in prayer and bible study. Tell everyone you are not the person you used to be but have a new life in Christ. They may test you so turning them down will show them you mean business and it will be a testimony to your new life in Christ. Merry Christmas - Val
106 | Why do I want to speak in tongues? | 1 Cor 13:1 | Val | 212318
Merry Christmas, I once went to a church like that. I had to leave and go somewhere else where this was not emphasized. Different churches have different personalities. You have to find one that fits yours and you feel comfortable. I believe they believe it is a second gift after salvation. Love God and keep His commandments. Read the gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. They are especially meaningful this time of year. From now until Easter the Christ's story is emphasized. Visit several bible believing churches in your local area. May the Lord lead you to a place to worship Him. Merry Christmas - Val

108 | Sell what you have-give alms | Bible general Archive 4 | Val | 212260
Luke 12:15 Then He said to them, "Beware, and be on your guard against every form of greed; for not even when one has an abundance does his life consist of his possessions." The subject is money. The amount is more than is needed. The warning is not to let money become our god. We cannot serve God and money. How do we avoid this natural tendency toward greed? Giving to those in need. There are also verses that say we are to owe no man anything so we would not sell all we have because that would make us indebted to others. We are to be responsible with our resources. Not greedy and hording an abundance. |

110 | Did He Led Captives @ Death/Ressurection | Eph 4:8 | Val | 212038
Greetings Searcher; I see no one is taking your bait. I'll give it a try. No I don't think so. It really doesn't say. It makes better sense to me anyway that it was that compartment referred to as Abraham's bosom where believers spirits were. The other compartment of sheol is still there. The one where the wicked rich man is. This is all speculation as the scripture does not elaborate on it. Since Christ was the firstfruit he lead the rest of the fruit to heaven. I believe those you are talking about in Matthew probably went on to die again. We are told in Hebrews that some received their dead back. I believe its chapter 11. Blessings - Val

Hello kamschoolgrad, welcome to the forum. In replying to posts we mark our posts as a note and not a question. My answer to you in regards to the text of Deuteronomy is to ask you a question. Who was the passage in Deuteronomy addressed to? If you answered the nation of Israel. You would be correct. Therefore since it was addressed to the nation of Israel it would not be for your family. When we read the old testament we are reading a text that has been translated into English. The Hebrew and Greek languages have bible dictionaries that give further explaination as to the meaning of the words translated into English. These definations give us insight into the full thought of the original author. Sometimes when we read a bible text it may appear to mean one thing but when we look deeper into its meaning in the orignal language we see it has a deeper and different meaning in how we would apply it today. That is why a lot of people make fun of the old testament. They have no idea what the meaning and symbolism represent. There is a passage that says that in the later days there will come mockers of God's word. Its wrong to mock God and His word and to question God's integrity. If I did not know the answer to someone's question I would point them to God's character. He is holy, pure, righteous, just, creator, sustainer, eternal. I could go on. Do you see my point?

Robert, please mark your followup questions as a note rather than a new question. A thorough observation of the book of Hebrews is warranted by your question. You will only be satisfied when you have studied the book for yourself and discover the answers to your questions as you slow down and use a bible dictionary and cross references to understand the verse in question. It is only after thorough observation can an interpretation be made. You are asking for the interpretation first without doing the leg work yourself. I notice you have been on this topic for some time now. Its time to get down to some serious personal bible study. Welcome to the forum and I hope you take this exhortation in a way that points you to know Christ and His word better. Blessings, Val

115 | What does Hebrews 9:16 mean? | John 1:1 | Val | 211789
The word testament is the same as "will". For instance, your father may have a will and in it leave you his house. You would not receive the house until your father died. Similarly the New Covenant did not go into effect until Christ's death. Blessings Val
116 | Thank you for your answer. | Gal 3:2 | Val | 211529
The Sabbath is not something that is talked about in the churches I have attended. Perhaps someone else could help you with that. Doc is Jewish. He might give you some insight. I think if you come to Jesus by seeking Him and believing what He did for us you will see the gospel. Read Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The way we approach God is different now as the book of Hebrews will tell you. Love God and keep His commandments. Continue your prayer and bible readings and good deeds would be my advice to anyone. I am not sure I answered your question as you would like. Maybe some of the other forum members can aid you. Blessings, Val
117 | More details on Galatians 3:10 | Gal 3:2 | Val | 211514
I think what you might want to study a topic called syncretism. Syncretism is what some of the people in Paul's time wanted to do. They wanted to harmonize Judaism and Christianity. Thus you see Paul's teaching in Galatians. It is a hard topic and I have difficulty with it myself. It takes studing the different books of the bible. I learn something more about the law which was associated with works and grace which is in Christ alone. Now the law is not the problem. The problem was and has always been sin. The law is good. Obeying the law is good. People in the NT were trying to combine the law and grace, Judaism and Christianity. Does that make sense? Read the book of Hebrews and the book of Leviticus. Hebrews explains how Christ fulfilled the requirements of the law. Blessings, Val
118 | Living together | John 3:16 | Val | 211404
Pray about it first. If you participate in the dinner this wil give a physical appearance of approval. If you tell them how much you love them and how much you want to participate but are afraid it will affect your christian witness then they should understand. Be prepared with scripture and do a thorough study on the topic. Try not to shut down communication as you may be the only gospel they read. Blessings, Val
119 | Reading the Bible with more Questions | 2 Tim 1:1 | Val | 211230
Dear Pete, one thing that I have learned is that the more I study the bible the more I don't know. However, in saying that let me say the questions you ask are very good questions therefore get in an in-depth bible study such as those offered at Precept.org. I have used these for over 20 years and have grown and am still growing in the faith. The funny thing about bible study is that it is not the means to an end. We will never know everything here on this earth but as we learn and grow we will still have questions on different topics. As you can see many people here who have been studying the bible still have questions. When you do a quick read through which is good don't get me wrong, you don't grasp the deep golden nuggets of truth that you will get when you slow down and do an in-depth dig it out for yourself study. Precept shows you how to study the bible. It has you look up the meaning of words in the Greek or Hebrew. It has you go to cross references which tie it all together. So be patient and enjoy the journey. It is a wonderful journey and I commend you for even wanting to study God's word. So many do not have time or the desire to study so congratulations on your endeavors. Browse the Precept Upon Precept Book studies they have to offer and you will see different books and topics that cover your concerns. That would be a good book to start in. Enjoy. Hope this helps, Val
120 | ... | Eph 2:15 | Val | 211206
I believe you will find part of your answers in the book of Hebrews. The law is defined in the book of Hebrews as a system of worship, a way to approach God. It contrasts the earthly tabernacle and the heavenly tabernacle. It shows how Jesus brought in by His sacrifice, a perfect sacrifice, only offered one time by his death and resurrection. It abolished the animal sacrifices. The animal sacrifices and the furniture represents Jesus. For instance; the showbread/Jesus is the bread of life, the lampstand or menorah/Jesus is the light of the world. It is a beautiful picture of the better covenant aka the New Covenant. When a person believes, has faith in what Jesus has done at the cross and His finished work that person is sealed with the Holy Spirit who helps him have power over sin and walk in obedience to Christ. We still gain insight from the first five books of the bible as to what pleases God, i.e., His moral expectations. We have direction as to what is immorality and how to treat one another, i.e., don't steal, kill, covet, etc. Breaking the law in one point breaks the whole law and brings the curse of death. Christ broke that curse with His one sacrifice so that we are no longer under a curse of death. People who do not believe, have faith in Jesus are still under the curse of the law which is death. Hope this helps. Val
