It's always best to look at these kind of verses in context. Eph 6:10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 15 and having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. 17 And take THE HELMET OF SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. So you see verse 14 is just one part of the whole armor of God. It's a good exercise to do some soul searching every once in a while throughout one's whole life to check this passage and see where our armor might be suffering and need some maintenance. (If you're curious about some of the items of armor themselves, look them up in a encyclopedia; it'll be quite interesting as they come from the era of the Roman army.) That's one reason why I like to refer to the Bible as the Perfect Maintenance Manual. Upon doing that introspection and discovering we're a little weak in one or more areas, we should study God's Word and brush up on our knowledge and wisdom in that area. IF by any chance we think we're getting fairly close to being ready to meet our Lord, then we need to check out Paul's words in Gal 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the sinful nature with its passions and desires. 25Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. I'll take a stab. God doesn't show favoitism in the traditional sense as you and I understand it. He's the Creator and we are the creation; He's the Potter and we're just the clay. However, I do see and understand what you're saying. God does seem to us to be somewhat chauvenistic as he seems to favor men over women, but that just happens to be God's order of things like His creation of the Sun and the planets going around it. As Paul says in 1 Cor 11:3 Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God. 4 Every man who prays or prophesies with long hair dishonors his head. 5 And every woman who prays or prophesies with no covering on her head dishonors her head–she is just like one of the "shorn women." 6 If a woman has no covering, let her be for now with short hair, but since it is a disgrace for a woman to have her hair shorn or shaved, she should grow it again. 7 A man ought not to have long hair since he is the image and glory of God; but the woman is the glory of man. and again Paul to Timothy 1 Tim 2:14 And Adam was not the one deceived; it was the woman who was deceived and became a sinner. Now don't misunderstand. We men had our part in messing up the good deal we all had in the Garden of Eden. It's just that the Devil knew He could tempt the woman, Eve easier that he could with Adam and he chose the sure thing in his mind. But that illustrates God order in the universe, with us humans it's man then woman. It's a functional thing like the horse before cart, nothing more. Men MUST NOT use this God's order of things to abuse or to our advantage. God developed a relationship with the Jewish nation as a result of the promise He made to Abraham but His main purpose in doing so was to introduce the Savior of the whole world, His Son. It was a natural step to start off Christianity with the converted Jews in Jerusalem. As a matter of fact, it's implied if it hadn't been for the persecution AND the conversion of Saul to Paul as the Apostle to the Gentiles, the Jews would have been delighted to have kept Christianity to themselves forever. Thanks be to God that he did use the persecution and dispersed christians out of Jerusalem to spread Christianity throughout the rest of the Gentile world, which includes you and me. Thus we see the various ways mankind messed up the church as we see in all of Paul's letters and the other epistles of the NT. I hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

In the sense of the word prophet meaning "mouthpiece for God" as it did in the OT, the answer is yes. Jesus was the perfect mouthpiece for since He knew His Father so well. He was then and is now in perfect synce with His Father. This is clearly shown in Matt 3:16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and lighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, "This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased." Dear Mr. Kane, I'm afraid I have to agree with Hank's overall sentiment. I'd like to just throw in a few more scriptures as follows Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. 8Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable--if anything is excellent or praiseworthy--think about such things. 9Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me--put it into practice. And the God of peace will be with you. 1 Thes 5:22 Avoid every kind of evil Rom 14:22 So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God. Blessed is the man who does not condemn himself by what he approves. 23But the man who has doubts is condemned if he eats, because his eating is not from faith; and everything that does not come from faith is sin. After being reminded of all these verses including Hank's I don't really see how you or anyone could possibly even think about defending the actions as you're suggesting in your post. Even in a monestary, the gentlemen know better than to tempt fate and God by placing a young man and woman in such a precarious position as described in your post. A person has no right to try to influence another person to sin. Everything about your proposal flashes a danger sign so I would urge you to stop and consider the consequences. In the Bible, I would think this would be the best portrayal of the distinction between the disciples. Those disciples closest to the Lord were those as listed in verse 13 but these men had been taught to do their part to fulfill scripture and so they made arrangements to replace Judas who killed himself. BUT notice there were certain qualifications they followed. And then they waited for the coming of the Holy Ghost, the Comforter the Lord promised them. Then we see the final distinction made of the Apostles in Acts 2. Remember this information comes to us from the pen of Luke who was not an Apostle but a disciple who wrote this book with the blessing of the Apostles. Please remember Luke was a historian in this sense and recorded the Acts from an historical perspective. And yes indeed, he wrote with the assistance of the inspiring Holy Ghost Himself. So you see, the disciples were all those folks (hundreds of them) who followed Christ from city to city as recorded in the Gospels. WHEREAS the Apostles were those special select few, the Lord's inner circle whom He selected to become His official representatives on whom He would bestow power and authority to make decisions and organize the church in its first few years of development. Do you remember these words, spoken to His inner circle of disciples? Matt 16:19 "I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven." 18 "Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven. This verse should be plain enough: Matt 28:18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age." There are other verses I'm sure but since we're anxious to follow God's Word, we only need to be told once, correct? Of course, it might be appropriate to mention that in NT language, the words "preach" or "prophet" were based on the Greek word meaning being a mouthpiece for God which would include this word teach. I thought the discussion about the Spirit's involvement with King Saul made my opinion position on this pretty clear but I'll try again. Upon studying God's Word (all of it) and looking at it as a whole, it becomes pretty clear that God the Father took "center stage" throughout the OT. Whereas Jesus do the same in the Gospels as portrayed by Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. Then, during the rest of the NT AFTER the Gospels, the Holy Spirit dominated and had His time. Now don't misunderstand, PLEASE, each of the three had a brief showing in each of these 3 phases. For example, it's suggested by some that we see Jesus in Dan 3:25 He said, "Look! I see four men loosed and walking about in the midst of the fire without harm, and the appearance of the fourth is like a son of the gods!" So the conclusion is all 3 of the Godhead have been involved in this world-wide program of God's getting his beloved creation back at Home with Him since the creation. But I agree with you it is rather obvious that their appearance in the different phases as mentioned above is in submission to Whomever has center stage. I hope this makes my position more clear. This is indeed a tough question, every bit as tough as my post 114616, if not tougher. Here, one of the most noble men in the whole Bible gets killed and relatively little is done about it by HUMAN standards. My conclusion is that once again our Lord is showing his creation who really is in charge. My only solace is that He created us and like a Potter's clay, He can do with us as He wants and there's not a whole lot we can do or say about it. Just re-read Job and we have to admit as far as we humans are concerned all that bad stuff happened because God let it happen to him. The bottom line: I wouldn't let this bother you too much. Col 3:16 Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with thankfulness in your hearts to God. 17 Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father. 1 Cor 13 comes to mind at least in my world since I don't practice enough of it. How about you? I'm thinking our job as christian critics ought to be part time and a very small portion of our time at that. It saves you by the resurrection of Jesus Christ, 22who has gone into heaven and is at God's right hand--with angels, authorities and powers in submission to him. Also Rom 6 and Acts 2 I acknowledge there are a few verses that are not quite as clear as these above but the point is we're taking a chance when we stand on such questionable verses. The net result of the NT as a whole very clearly gives baptism as the place where we contact the blood of Jesus through grace and faith and it's there where God washes away our sins. I must admit I knew that the Lord commanded Joshua and his army to do this, this is destroy whole cities but I'd forgotten just how many times Joshua obeyed. It's a little scary to think about falling into the hands of such a God unprepared. We can only conclude that our God is spiritual and we as human beings tend to be addicted to this physical life. We're encouraged to give up that addiction and look forward to the next life hereafter. But I'll agree with you it's tough to do. Just pray that we can mature and finally trust God completely. You know of course that God did all this destruction through Joshua for the same reason as shown in 1 Ki 11:1 King Solomon, however, loved many foreign women besides Pharaoh's daughter-Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians and Hittites. 2 They were from nations about which the LORD had told the Israelites, "You must not intermarry with them, because they will surely turn your hearts after their gods." Nevertheless, Solomon held fast to them in love. 3 He had seven hundred wives of royal birth and three hundred concubines, and his wives led him astray. 4 As Solomon grew old, his wives turned his heart after other gods, and his heart was not fully devoted to the LORD his God, as the heart of David his father had been. I can only cite the fact that Cornelius was a christian while being a centurian (as portrayed in Acts 10) in the Roman Army so apparently they weren't all bad. As you can see in my profile, I've been a christian since I was 13 and I joined the US Air Force at 21, served 18 years. All that time, I've had my ups and downs with the Lord but I've always gone to worship and attended faithfully with my family. It was during my assignment to Okinawa, Japan where I served as a deacon. So in my estimation, most Americans don't have a problem with a christian serving in the military. I know there's a controversy about this subject but I've never understood it. In both the OT and NT, the Lord endorsed military becoming a member of God's people. It does come with some challenges but they're not as rough as some of the civilian jobs I've seen and known about. God bless. --Rowdy |

You seem to be referring to Chap 4 as there is no such verse in Chap 24. Cited for reference Ex 4:25 Then Zipporah took a flint and cut off her son's foreskin and threw it at Moses' feet, and she said, "You are indeed a bridegroom of blood to me." It helps if you know Moses' background. He spent a third of life, 40 years in this desert country so people living here were probably used to a rough life but it's quite possible they had never encountered this custom of circumcision. So when Moses insisted on having their sons circumcised, this was probably quite a traumatic experience for her. It should be emphasized that she THREW the foreskin at Moses' feet. Although it's not specifically stated as much, I think almost everyone agrees this passage is describing Christ. Isaiah 53:1 Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? 2 He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. 3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. 4 Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. 5 But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. 6 We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. Apparently Jesus' appearance was about average according to verse 2. I don't know for certain but I don't think you find any specific description of Christ, the kind you're looking for in the OT. Just me personally, I'm thinking that's a good thing. If his appearance were described somewhere accurately in the Bible, then those physcial characteristics would turn into items of worship for some folks and might even cause fights between parents, etc. God bless. --Rowdy |

Matt 18:9 "If your eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter life with one eye, than to have two eyes and be cast into the fiery hell. These two verses are the only ones I could find in the NASB version of the Bible. There may be more but since there is somewhat of a variety of descriptions of hell, a person could argue all these descriptions are there to give us the idea it's a horrible place and indeed it is. I've heard it argued for example how can fire exist there since there will be no oxygen for it to consume but then God had the burning bush to burn and not consume that bush so what's the answer? I honestly don't know. I'm not sure anyone can give an authoritative answer from the Bible but it surely is a place I want to avoid. God bless. --Rowdy |

I don't know anything about a second form of grace apart from what we read in our Bibles. Grace will be most important to us on Judgment Day when God considers how we lived our lives here on earth. The gap between our imperfect lives and His perfect standard as in His Son will be made up by this Grace IF we have the right relationship with His Son's blood.
