121 | Can I trust my spouses? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 120022
In THE ultimate confrontation when we meet up with almost unbearable circumstances like that of our beloved example in Job and his wife encouraged him to "Curse God and die," we must hold fast to the last and really only thing that matters most and that is our faith in God. All else pales in significance. HOWEVER, I doubt that you really are anywhere close to that level of suffering as Job and he came through it like a champ. Go to your wife and start a dialouge, open up to her and encourage her to do likewise. Identify the weak areas of your lives together and seek God's assistance through study of His Word AND constant prayer. If both of you pray together and often, you'll be well on your way to great improvement. If the doctor has given up on you, go to another doctor and get a second opinion or maybe even a third but if you're convinced there's nothing more to be said from the medical community, then you really need to put your trust in Him. IF it's God's will, then He can heal you. If not, then count your blessings and each precious moment, especially with those whom you love. We'll pray for you and encourage you as best we can. God bless. --Rowdy |

I do hope you'll accept my apology as I genuinely thought your post was facetious and I responded in kind. Please forgive me as we on the Forum are used to dealing with questions with more substance to them. I do hope you'll learn to lighten up, at least just a little bit. Life's too short not to have some fun every once in a while. I'm afraid the sad truth of the matter is that you're going to find lots of serious and stern folks on this Forum and statements to go with them. God bless. --Rowdy |

123 | God pleased with Job | Job | Rowdy | 119981
I can only quote from the first chapter Job 1:7 The LORD said to Satan, "From where do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming about on the earth and walking around on it." 8 The LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered My servant Job? For there is no one like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, fearing God and turning away from evil." To me it looks pretty clear that God thought very highly of Job since He initiated the conversation. What do you think? God bless. --Rowdy |

126 | scriptures of women being deacons | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 119833
1 Tim 3:12 Deacons must be husbands of only one wife, and good managers of their children and their own households. I'm afraid God's Word is very clear on this subject. You'll probably receive other opinions but their's and mine don't count; only what we see in God's Word will be used to judge us on Judgement Day. Also, I don't say this from a chauvenistic viewpoint; this is just the way God designed His World, our temporary home. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy PS: You may be referred to scriptures that mention "deaconess" but most scholars agree that is a reference to a wife of a deacon and should not considered an official title like that bestowed on the deacon. |

127 | Who is included in the promise? | Rom 4:16 | Rowdy | 119801
Cited for context: Rom 4:10 How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, or uncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised; 11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12 and the father of circumcision to those who not only are of the circumcision, but who also follow in the steps of the faith of our father Abraham which he had while uncircumcised. 13 For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith. 14 For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15 for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation. 16 For this reason it is by faith, in order that it may be in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all, We should remember with most of these discussions from Paul about circumcision vs. uncircumcision, he was dealing with the aftereffects of the Judeizers, those who were following Paul and insisting that newly converted christians have themselves circumcized to be truly pleasing to God. The most important point we should get from the passage above is that neither works on our part or circumcision or anything else we could possibly do or think of can possibly qualify us to deserve God's grace. "We all fall short of God's glory" and if we were left on our own, we would all be without hope. However, because of God's Grace and His Son's willingness to go to the cross in our stead we can be fellow heirs to the Heavenly Home God has waiting for us. Now this doesn't mean we get off "Scott free" as far as our works are concerned. For our works do act as a proof that we are God's children just like the Jews' offering of sacrifices and their circumcision was their proof. The process is understood a little more clearly this way: If we don't have works (fruit of our labor), such as feeding the poor, teaching the unlearned of God or just spreading the gospel, then we don't have the Grace of God or His Spirit abiding in us. If we have these items in our lives, then we are literally compelled to be fruitful for our Lord as in the vineyard parable. The two, Grace and works, go hand in hand, one proves the existance of the other. BUT we must rely on the Grace of God to save us, as long as we really are His children. A person could compare this relationship to that showed between two cars with identical body styles but completely different engines. Without God's Grace in our lives, we have absolutely no chance of winning that race, just like a 4 cylinder engine. But when we obey God and He adds us to His family, His Grace gives us a whole new engine with full power, all we need to cross the finish line with lots to spare. Now, here's where the works come in. Some of us might be good at preaching, or singing, teaching one on one, some of us are good at encouraging like Barnabas. But we're all expected to take up our cross from the Lord and adopt a ministry if it's nothing more than posting statements to this Forum and encouraging folks to study their Bibles with challenging questions and responses to their questions. These works prove that we've got the power where it counts, inside us just like that race car. The Holy Spirit within us hums just like a finely tuned motor when we're working and sacrificing our will to our Father's Will. Thus, we prove our faithfulness IAW Rev 2:10 over and over again. Our confidence grows as our knowledge of God's Word grows within us. And as our knowledge and confidence grows, so do the Grace and Love of God grow within us. Our friends and neighbors notice the way we're different with our talk and our priorities. It's easy to see that works in this scenario takes a back seat to Grace as they should but that back seat MUST be filled. Otherwise the Grace from God within us begins to wither away and eventually leave us just like King Saul. Yes Grace and works go hand in hand together like salt and pepper, peaches and cream. I'm convinced we can't get to Heaven both of them as reflected James 2. Grace and faith by themselves indicates a dead faith. I hope this clarifys the issue at little bit. God bless. --Rowdy |

128 | Major and Minor Prophets difference | OT general | Rowdy | 119788
It's just merely another modern convenience for us men of God, students of the Bible. The first 5 books of the OT being about History, then the books on Wisdom, the Major Prophets and the Minor Prophets. You probably already know about a similar division of the NT. What you might not know is the invention of chapters (dividing the books of the Bible) wasn't done until the Middle Ages and then the division of those chapters into verses a couple hundred years after that. I forget which chapter in the KJV version of Acts ends with a comma but it's there. (I think it's somewhere close to Chapter 8). All of these designations just make Bible study a little more easy for those of us that like to refer to topics in nice, neat packages. Can you imagine referring to scripture without these divisions? In an attempt to answer your question directly, the main difference was the length and breadth of subject matter in the different books. The Major Prophets apparently made a more significant impact on the Jewish mindset and the world than the Minor Prophets, i.e. Elijah's contest with false prophets. The most recurring themes throughout the Minor was the abuses of the priests and rulers of the Isrealite nation and going back to God in simple devotion to His laws. God bless. --Rowdy |

129 | Romans 12:17 | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 119783
Staying within context: 14Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse. 15Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep. 16Be of the same mind toward one another. Do not set your mind on high things, but associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own opinion. 17Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all men. 18If it is possible, as much as depends on you, live peaceably with all men. 19Beloved, do not avenge yourselves, but rather give place to wrath; for it is written, "Vengeance is Mine, I will repay," says the Lord. Here Paul is providing some practical advice for successful christian living in an ungodly world but he and God both know it's literally impossible to please all men all the time. So the overall sentiment in verse 18 really prevails. As you've suggested, ultimately we must please God so when we see an obvious contrast we know who we should obey as in Acts 5:26 Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. 27And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, 28saying, "Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man's blood on us!" 29But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: "We ought to obey God rather than men. 30The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. 31Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. 32And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him." Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

130 | The Fathers Gifts | Matt 7:11 | Rowdy | 119768
Copied for context: Matt 7:7 "Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 "For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 "Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? 10 "Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11 "If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him! 12 "In everything, therefore, treat people the same way you want them to treat you, for this is the Law and the Prophets. It seems to me our Lord was speaking about gifts in general. He starts out by talking about asking for whatever from God and He gives as long as it's something we need and can't get for ourselves. We just have to mature and match our needs with God's. Then Jesus compares how mankind gives to his own family members and shows God as being the ultimate Father of all. Naturally He too will give gifts but the difference is He will give perfect gifts. As I see it, there's nothing here to suggest that Jesus is talking about any one specific item or gift to anyone in particular or even a group. He's just reflecting His Father's mindset toward us as His Creation. Good question and God bless. --Rowdy |

131 | Orginal language of Old an New testament | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 119710
In the same order as questions: 1. Most scholars agree the New Testament was written in Greek for maximum distribution throughout the known world in the 1st and 2nd centuries. 2.a) Singing from Col 3:16, b) Preaching from 1 Cor 1:23-24, c) Praying from Acts 16:25, d) Giving from 1 Cor 16:1-2 e) Communion from 1 Cor 11:23-26 3. a) Hearing (Understanding) the Gospel Message from Rom 10:14, b) Believe that Jesus is the Christ, Son of the Living God from Acts 16:31, c) Repent of one's sins turning their lives around to live as a obedient disciple of God and His Son from Acts 2:38, d) Confess in public the Name of Jesus as Lord and Savior from Rom 10:9-10, e) Be Baptized in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost from Matt 28:19, f) Be faithful till death from Rev 2:10 4. Most scholars agree almost unanimously the OT was written in Hebrew. What would be your position on these questions? Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

132 | How is the Word like fire and a hammer? | Jeremiah | Rowdy | 119692
Cited for context Jer 23:28 "The prophet who has a dream may relate his dream, but let him who has My word speak My word in truth. What does straw have in common with grain?" declares the LORD. 29 "Is not My word like fire?" declares the LORD, "and like a hammer which shatters a rock? 30 "Therefore behold, I am against the prophets," declares the LORD, "who steal My words from each other. 31 "Behold, I am against the prophets," declares the LORD, "who use their tongues and declare, 'The Lord declares.' 32 "Behold, I am against those who have prophesied false dreams," declares the LORD, "and related them and led My people astray by their falsehoods and reckless boasting; yet I did not send them or command them, nor do they furnish this people the slightest benefit," declares the LORD. It seems rather clear that God's Word as cited throughout the Bible should be considered a weapon, especially against false teachers. His Word should ALWAYS be used to "test everything" or to "inspect a brother's works (his fruits)" as cited in 1 Thes 5:21 and Col 1:10. So you see, the Word of God is a wonderful and versitle tool. It's a comfort and full of solutions to those full of Godliness, hungering and thirsting for righteousness but for those that have their own agenda, they must answer to God. We do well to remind them which is done most powerfully when we show them God's Word through our lives as His children in our obedience. For some never read or study seriously His Word and must rely on you and me to show them, hoping and praying they will be inspired to study God's Word on their own. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

133 | Can God Bless America? | Prov 14:34 | Rowdy | 119657
I can only offer the following quote from Jer 44:7 "Now this is what the LORD God Almighty, the God of Israel, says: Why bring such great disaster on yourselves by cutting off from Judah the men and women, the children and infants, and so leave yourselves without a remnant? 8 Why provoke me to anger with what your hands have made, burning incense to other gods in Egypt, where you have come to live? You will destroy yourselves and make yourselves an object of cursing and reproach among all the nations on earth. 9 Have you forgotten the wickedness committed by your fathers and by the kings and queens of Judah and the wickedness committed by you and your wives in the land of Judah and the streets of Jerusalem? With just a couple minor substitutions of proper nouns in place of Judah and Jerusalem, one would think this prophecy was being directed to our beloved country. Will we heed the wisdom from our own world history? Or will we continue following the footsteps of the Roman Empire? Will we learn from the guidance as cited in the Book of Jonah and repent like Ninevah? Who could possibly answer these questions, yours or mine but God Himself? I hope and pray that we do so for my kids' sake and my grandchildren. Really good questions. I look forward to seeing other responses. God bless. --Rowdy |

134 | Temple | John | Rowdy | 119649
Cited for reference: John 2:15 And He made a scourge of cords, and drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables; 16 and to those who were selling the doves He said, "Take these things away; stop making My Father's house a place of business." 17 His disciples remembered that it was written, "ZEAL FOR YOUR HOUSE WILL CONSUME ME." Apparently from verse 16, Jesus was disgusted with the idea of conducting business inside His Father's temple. BUT I've heard that the money changers were also taking advantage of the people, especially the poor in that they were overcharging for the items being sacrifice and making huge sums of profit. I don't know that to be supported by the Bible but seems like I've heard it from Jewish history. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

135 | how animals got water in desert | Exodus | Rowdy | 119617
Ex 17:3 But the people thirsted there for water; and they grumbled against Moses and said, "Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?" 4 So Moses cried out to the LORD, saying, "What shall I do to this people? A little more and they will stone me." 5 Then the LORD said to Moses, "Pass before the people and take with you some of the elders of Israel; and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the Nile, and go. 6 "Behold, I will stand before you there on the rock at Horeb; and you shall strike the rock, and water will come out of it, that the people may drink." And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel. I would imagine this represents just one single episode of this kind of activity which probably took place maybe as often as weekly or whenever it was needed. We should always remember if the Lord knows the number of hairs on our head and feeds the birds in the air, He'll ALWAYS take care of His children and see to their NEEDS (and maybe even some or most of their wants). See Matt 6. God bless. --Rowdy |

136 | What does Luke 14:26 mean for christians | 2 Cor 5:17 | Rowdy | 119615

137 | What exactly is righteous anger? | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 119500
I can only recall what it took to make our Lord angry. We see that in Matt 21:12 Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. 13"It is written," he said to them, " 'My house will be called a house of prayer,' but you are making it a 'den of robbers.'" We should also remember the tremendous amount of abuse our Lord endured, including a sorry excuse for a trial and the totally undeserved crucifixtion. So after prayerfully considering the subject that might be making us angry and think "Would Christ be angry at such a thing?" If He definitely would, then go for it BUT then we must remember Paul's words in Eph 4:25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 26"In your anger do not sin": Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry, 27and do not give the devil a foothold. One last reminder: We must do everything possible to resolve that item causing such anger like approaching the person and talk to them about it because we want to go to bed at night and answer God "Yes, Lord, I did the best I could in following your commands including" Rom 12:17 Do not repay anyone evil for evil. Be careful to do what is right in the eyes of everybody. 18If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. 19Do not take revenge, my friends, but leave room for God's wrath, for it is written: "It is mine to avenge; I will repay," says the Lord. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |

138 | Jerusalem Council | Acts | Rowdy | 119473
This was the church's first major confrontation with a major issue. Remember the church had just been established just a short while previously and they were "winging it" on their own with the exception of the Holy Spirit. Also remember God and Jesus were expecting great things out of these gentlemen as cited in Matt 18:18 " I tell you the truth, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. 19"Again, I tell you that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, it will be done for you by my Father in heaven. Imagine for a moment, you have lived your whole life, like your father and his father with the 600 plus rules and regulations as promulgated by the Law of Moses. Suddenly you're released from all that and are told you've been given all authority to "bind and loose" as you see fit for the whole church for all time till Christ comes again. Yeah, awesome, I know and incredibly humbling at the same time. Personally, I think these gentlemen did an outstanding job, especially considering their educational background. Also I think they followed Jesus plan for resolving conflict from Matt 18:15 "If your brother sins against you, go and show him his fault, just between the two of you. If he listens to you, you have won your brother over. 16But if he will not listen, take one or two others along, so that 'every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.' 17 If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church; and if he refuses to listen even to the church, treat him as you would a pagan or a tax collector. They gathered the facts from men they could trust would be unbiased and truthful. The considered their options, prayed carefully and issued a decision reflecting their maturity and love for all mankind for all time. Yes, I think we definitely see the Hand of God in these men and the way they managed the church through its initial development. Thanks be to God they were humble and just like you and me. God bless. --Rowdy |

139 | why was Jacob Loved and Esau Hated | Rom 9:1 | Rowdy | 119470
Cited for reference Gen 33:1 Then Jacob lifted his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids. 2 He put the maids and their children in front, and Leah and her children next, and Rachel and Joseph last. 3 But he himself passed on ahead of them and bowed down to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. 4 Then Esau ran to meet him and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. From reading the above, I can only say that finally after much grief and sadness in separation for many years, these two brothers were reunited. To me, personally, this is a wonderful representation of what we see in 1 Jn 1. If we're in sync with our brethren and we know one of those is loved by God, to me that means both are loved by God. Now you may be referring to the Bible's use of hate like Jesus said in Lk 14:26 "If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters--yes, even his own life--he cannot be my disciple. Naturally, Jesus is NOT saying we should learn to hate our mother and father and love Him. Here and throughout the Bible, "hate" is a relative term showing an extreme contrast. We must love God so much more than our mother or our brother but that doesn't mean we should hate anyone. Apparently, the ancient languages didn't have a word to accurately communicate this comparison. I think you can rest assured God loved Esau in His own way. After he too had a rather large family. God bless. --Rowdy |
