If you say in one breath that Christ’s crucifixation provides forgiveness, once and for all, and then in the next breath say we are forgiven only when we perform in a manner that causes us to gain God’s favor, God’s forgiveness, is this not double-mindedness? Is this not a mixing of the law and grace? Is this not exactly what Paul was addressing in the church at Galatians? “You foolish Galatians, who has bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to find out from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of the Law, or by hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh?” Galatians 3:1-3 |
