I have noticed that many churches across America have (to me anyway) no semblence of a house of worship. I'm told that they are intentionally designed this way so that "unchurched" people will not feel threatened when they walk in. We have music that blasts as loud as rock concerts, drums, guitars, lights and sound sytems to rival any concert hall, comfortable seats, ample parking, and even food courts(!) It's all in the packaging, so I'm told . . . our job is to get 'em in the door, make 'em feel welcome and "at home" so that they can "hear the Gospel" and the Holy Spirit will do the rest. Is this meeting the needs of the world or "conforming" to the world? Is this necessary to reach the world with the Gospel? |

Luring them inside the building with junk snacks at a "food court" won't do the trick. They must be fed spiritual food from the word of God. The big question is, are they being fed in an atmosphere that resembles a carnival or a rock concert more than the church of the Lord Jesus Christ? Someone may counter, "But didn't Jesus feed 5,000 men plus women and children? Yes, He did. But not to get them to gather to listen to His message. They were already there. They were truly hungry and needed to eat. And as far as we know, Paul, the greatest preacher besides Jesus that the world has ever known, didn't carry a rock band with snare drums and strobe lights around with him on his missionary trips. He preached the gospel wherever he could, whenever he could and to whomever he could and under austere conditions that would not meet the criteria of modern-day church "packaging" experts. There are two churches in my city that compete with one another to bring in "big name" speakers, musicians, comedians, and even magicians to entertain the crowds. When one attends one of these "services" he often leaves with the distinct feeling that he has been to a carnival. And he really has. At some of these extravaganzas the church actually charges an admission fee. As for me, I'd sooner stay at home and watch an Andy Griffith Show rerun on TV and save my money for the alms box to feed the poor or buy Bibles for those who have none. --Hank | ||||||

Hank, you asked: "The big question is, are they being fed in an atmosphere that resembles a carnival or a rock concert more than the church of the Lord Jesus Christ?" What, in your mind, would be the elements necessary to distinguish a church from a concert hall? How does one create the "atmosphere" of sacredness? (Can it really be done?) The emphasis of my church is to "get em in and get em saved." Sadly, the numbers game of church growth has triumphed again and those older folks are being cast aside, to make room for the younger generation who needs the Gospel - the youth are the source of church growth don't you know! So now what do we have, a bunch of young bucks, with lots of vim and vigor who have come with a "better way" to win souls . . . I like your observation about the feeding of the 5,000 - they were hungry and Jesus fed they what they needed - are we feeding them what they need or what they want? Knowing you need something is not the same as wanting it. I guess you can see that I rather upset about the theatrical, peformer orientated "worship" that so characterizes the modern "evangelical" church today! Is nothing sacred anymore? mommapbs |

Wow. You guys are seeing the same things I am seeing in all these new churches popping up all over here in Florida. We have been here 5 months and still have not found a church we are comfortable in. I am very discouraged in what I see. I do not want to get into detail about the reasons for not staying with anyone of these. If you find it in your heart please pray for me that me and my family would find a church to honor and worship God in. I really miss that. Thanks. God Bless. |

denim Welcome to the forum and as a fellow Floridian welcome to Florida. Where abouts are you? I'm in the Tampa Bay area. I'm told by many ‘respected’ "experts" Florida is the hardest state in the nation for Christianity, and that the Tampa Bay area is the hardest within the state. Your right we see just about everything that can be imagined here in this state. One church I know even had a magician making the pastor appear and disappear during service on Easter Sunday, it that doesn’t rattle your boots nothing will. Every year we see more and more pastors getting the “call” to minister in Florida. It seems the call usually comes about mid winter to pastors in Michigan, New York, New England, you get the idea. While I would never think of questioning ones "call" :-) that might explain the caliber of preaching you are exposed to here. Keep looking there are some excellent churches with men dedicated and totally sold out for the Lord. Let me know your general area I may be able to direct you to a good church. EdB |

Ed, thank you. We are in Palm Coast. I am looking for a church that believes in the baptism of the Holy Spirit. The ones we have visited that believe are not satisfactory to me for various reasons, I think you know what I mean. Me and my family are so tired of looking. I have pretty much accepted us staying at the "town" church until God points us to another one. You would think with all these churches one would fit my family but hasn't. I appreciate your help in anyway. God bless. Peace. |

denim Wow Palm Coast that is a hard one. I know there is an a Assembly of God church there pastored by Terry Thomas. I don't know the man but that is a thought. If you don't mind traveling down to Port Orange I have a very good friend Tom Finken that is pastoring a new work Bethel Assembly they meet in the Horizon Elementary School. I never heard Tom preach but I have sat under his teaching and heard his heart in prayer many times so I know he is a faithful servant of the Lord's. EdB |

Palm Coast is a hard one, isn't it! We visisted the Assembly of God church and I don't want to say much except I don't think I would go back. How did you hear about Terry Thomas? Anyway, Port Orange is kind of far, I will keep it in mind. If by some chance you hear anything good around my area please let me know. I appreciate your help and concern. God bless. Peace. |
