"many churches across Amer. have no resemblelance of a house of worship" What does a house of worship supposed to look like? Actually we "are" the house. It is just our preconceived ideas that cause us to think the way we do. I say that if souls are being saved and lives are being changed....bring on the band, the lights, and the comfortable chairs, etc. Larry...... |

Larry I agree if people are getting saved, however the real question then becomes are they getting saved? Many are being filled with feel good, ego building messages that leaves little room for repentance and humility. In fact sin and the fact they are sinners in need of salvation is rarely mentioned. So if their getting saved I ask from what, the bad opinion they had of themselves when they walked in? Two Sundays ago I listened to a man preach his whole message on you don't have to change to be a Christian. I was in shock and even more so as I left hearing people commenting on how wonderful the message was. He preached in a very upbeat dynamic way, letting his fantastic personalilty be seen and by this won the people's approval not with the truth but with his delivery. People were drawn to what he said, as he painted them as being God's perfect children. However he forgot one thing they are not born that way, but become God's perfect children only if they are cleansed by nothing less than the precious blood of Christ. That point was totally absent from his message. EdB |

Ed, your story about the slick preacher who wooed them by his delivery and not by the gospel of Christ brings to mind a personal experience of some few years back. My wife and I were at that time members of a church from which we have long since absented ourselves (and good riddance!). The so-called pastor went, as I recall, some half dozen Sundays in a row during which in none of his sermons did he ever as much as mention the name of Jesus, much less preach anything remotely resembling a gospel message. He was eventually fired and replaced by a team of ministers who were worse than he was. The church is hanging on by the thinnest possible thread, is having trouble meeting its own housekeeping expenses, and is shriveled up like a prune. The church building is situated in an ideal location in town, and the physical accomodations are modern, comfortable, and well above average. But something is missing. Something vital. The word of God is not being preached, the Good News of the gospel is not being proclaimed in its purity and simplicity. "In vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men." Hank That is interesting, in most cases where Jesus isn't being preached the church is the fastest growing church. I know in the area I live if you preach Jesus the church seems to grow agonizingly slow if at all, but preach what the people want to hear and it will grow by leaps and bounds. In fact I know one church where the preacher preaches a different show each week, in fact he even preached with a python around his neck one time, and his church is growing. I have a very dear friend that is most excellent and preaches nothing but the word of God and his church is on the verge of collapse. EdB |
