I'm afraid I have to chime in on Dblessor's side on this issue. Sure, I guess we could all cite criticisms about the church on a national level. I've posted a few negative comments myself but the most important thing our Lord wants us to do is realize that there's always going to be sin in the world. There's also going to be a large number of those deceived into thinking they have found true Christianity. That's been going on since the first century. We can even read in Acts 13 about false prophets as follows: 5When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper. 6They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. And everyone remembers the warnings from Apostle Paul to his son of faith, Timothy. So all of God's children everywhere need to understand God knew this would happen. We need to keep studying God's Word with an attitude of "better safe than sorry." So what does all this mean to you and me. In my opinion, it means we have to keep looking. If we see stuff that seems to make our worship less than what it should be, we shouldn't follow Cain's example and get angry about it. We should look around for the Abels in the world and follow their lead, most especially IF they're following God's Word. As always, God bless you all. |

Rowdy, I read your post and I don't disagree with what you have written, but please also understand that I am not angry, just "upset about the theatrical, peformer orientated "worship" that so characterizes the modern "evangelical" church today!" I asked, "Is nothing sacred anymore?" What does sacred mean to you? Does God think it is important? Blessings, mommapbs PS: Just today I was reflecting about a time in Whistler, BC when I started down the mountain in a cloud. Although there were piste markers, for a time I could see nothing but white. Everything blended together - I could not determine which way was up or which way was down - so I fell over. (This is called vertigo.) Without a reference point, I lost my sense of spacial position. I think that this is happening within the church too. Everything is blurring together as we import more and more of worldly influences into our sanctuaries. What is so wrong with desiring an atmosphere where the holiness of God is distinct, and discernable? Indeed Jesus came to save sinners, and we all need THE Savior; but in my opinion, that need is recognized when, just like a piste marker, a holy standard is present. |

I have to agree with your overall sentiment. The church on a national scale is definitely introducing too much stuff from the world to make it more attractive. As I mentioned in earlier posts, we need to let the beauty and simplicity of God's Word and His patterns therein come out in our worship assemblies. We need to do everything we can to make sure that God, His Son and the Holy Spirit get all the glory. Too much of the time, we humans want to jazz up the worship to satisfy our lust for a truly fabulous worship service and what really happens is that people, especially visitors new to the area get distracted by all these extras. So, as with all things moderation needs to be a key element in our worship and glorying of God. You might notice that church buildings and song books weren't specifically taught or prescribed by christians in the first century but there's certainly nothing wrong with those aids to our worship. I would be more in favor of seeing all the tremendous funds, time and effort invested instead in studying God's Word and evangelizing the world, putting emphasis on God's love for all mankind. Lastly, the holy standard you mentioned are the patterns we see from our Lord in God's Word, as we see in the book of Acts. Looking forward to your response. God bless. |

Greetings Rowdy - I am glad to see your passion for the study of God's Word - far too many believers are complacent in this area . . . right now I am reading a book on evangelism by Brian McLaren: "More Ready Than You Realize". His view of evangelism is quite different from what we have grown up with. Typically, the church is about numbers not names, sad. I believe that evangelism is found in our relationships with others. We glorify God when HE can been seen in us. We can not make Him attractive to others, but we can reflect His character. We forget that evangelism is the work of the Holy Spirit, both IN us and in those whom He is drawing. How arrogant to think that WE are responsible for another's eternal destiny! If we fail to respond, God will send another, maybe even a donkey. At this point, I'd prefer not to "spar" on the issue of eternal security. Let's agree to just stay in our corners OK? Thank you for clarifying your response. Blessings, mommapbs |
