I agree with you that we do not have a true to definition church today, or at least one that I am aware of. I do hope you are being sarcastic about your views on music. David quite often expressed his praise in the form of music as well as NT apostles. Music is an important part of our praise to the Lord and a praising church is just as important as one that learns the accurate Word of God. I believe we can have room in our time together for both as I am without doubt the first Christian church did as well. I do wish we had more Scripture from the pulpit than comedy, gimmicks, poor excuses for entertainment, but until WE the church unite and demand such, we have to continue to rely on small group Bible studies and individual study, and forums like this to sharpen that iron. May I ask what your PLACE of worship is like you currently go to? What denomination, etc? And thank you for your reply. I have never signed up for one of these I just happened upon this one when looking for some info on the NASB...which translation do prefer and why? |

Dear Cuddle, I disagree with you. We do, indeed, have a good definition of the church. We have the Word of God which defines quite well. The Scriptures tell us its author, purpose, tasks, means, and ultimate end. In my own tradition, that definition has been articulated well. I'd encourage you to look to the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith, Chapter 26. For brevity, I quote paragraphs 1 and 2: "The catholic or universal church, which (with respect to the internal work of the Spirit and truth of grace) may be called invisible, consists of the whole number of the elect, that have been, are, or shall be gathered into one, under Christ, the head thereof; and is the spouse, the body, the fulness of Him that filleth all in all. (Hebrews 12:23; Colossians 1:18; Ephesians 1:10, 22-23; Ephesians 5:23, 27, 32) "All persons throughout the world, professing the faith of the gospel, and obedience unto God by Christ according unto it, not destroying their own profession by any errors everting the foundation, or unholiness of conversation, are and may be called visible saints; and of such ought all particular congregations to be constituted. (1 Corinthians 1:2; Acts 11:26; Romans 1:7; Ephesians 1:20-22)" Your confusion arises because you do not distinguish between what is visible and what is invisible. The visible are the organizations and individual congregations of living human beings. We know from Scripture that what is visible is not yet pure, containing tares along with the wheat (Matthew 13:25-41). Please note that an extremely important doctrine is the Sufficiency of Scripture. To assert that we lack a workable definition of the Church is tantamount to denying this doctrine. Notwithstanding, few of us in the forum would deny the criticisms that you've leveled at the congregations that draw the most attention in our day. In Him, Doc |

I think you should re- read how I defined 'church' in MY OWN WORDS. and if you can not respond in kind, please simply ignore me. I have never done this forum deal before. I am not going to debate with anyone my love of the church or my first love GOD, so please, if you can not respond in love, do not resppond to me.: ) I was simply repling with my understanding of what church is to me (in my own words)and from your reply I can tell you did not read what I wrote or you just like to be mean I am not sure which. | ||||||

Hi, Cuddle... You repeated the phrase "in my own words" twice. Do you mean that the words of others have no value? I want to encourage you in your love God. His Word is a precious, treasured gift. We show our love for Him by taking great care to use His Word as carefully, and properly as possible. In this textual medium I can show no greater love for my God or love and kindness for you, than by diligently bringing the light of Scripture to bear on all that we discuss. In Him, Doc |

Hello cuddle, Welcome to the Forum my friend. So your new to the "forum deal"? No problem. Allow me to give a few pointers that will apply here at SBF. 1. If you feel any offense regarding what someone has posted to you, YOU should re-read their post carefully. Remember a lot is missing in the communication process when we only have the words on screen. I can assure you that Doc would not have responded at all to your post without having first read it carefully and with sufficient consideration. 2. This is a forum for bible study. If you post something, expect a response. Don't expect that every response will agree with you. 3. Personal opinion and experience are considered of little value without the correlating support/confirmation of Scripture. Well, I said I would give a few pointers so I will stop there. The best advise might be to spend more time reading than posting in the beginning. This adds to a better appreciation of the regular posters that you will deal mostly with (the strengths and weakness of each). I'm glad for the affection you show for the local church. Praise God for that and may you contribute to it's spiritual growth. know too that it is that same love and affection for the Church that promotes criticism of the abominations we are seeing today in the church. in the love of Christ, Jeff PS. You should reconsider wanting to block Doc from posting to you. I'm speaking from experience after having put my own above advise to practice on this forum. You will learn from Doc a lot more often than you will be offended. |

Thank you Jeff I think I let my aggrivation get the better of me. I do love all my brothers and sisters, I will not try to block him. Your kindness is so very appreciated from the new 'cuddle' on the block ha ha I did post a question, do you think it would be one that would spark a reply from you? I need as many verses and historical ref. as you may have to support whichever side of the fence you are on. Cuddle |
