Tim Let me say I don't care for Rick Warren's books, I have many reasons that I won't go into, but let me just say they are not my cup of tea. Experiencing God by Henry Blackby and Claude King is similar to Rick Warren's book. However Experiencing God has never reached the acclaim or usage of Rick Warren’s. That breaks my heart and in my mind forces the question, why? Why would two book seeking the same “stated” objective being at a similar level of writing skill and style and being of the same quality not be accepted equally. Could it be their actual objectives weren’t the same? It is my opinion that Experiencing God offers a most excellent Biblical approach to the raised question. In Rick Warren’s book I see ideas that have proven successful for him and perhaps others, however in Experiencing God I see Biblical realities that have Biblical results. Biblical results do not always equal what society and even the church world considers successful. I wish everyone in this discussion would read Experiencing God and then continue this discussion. I suspect it would take a different tone. EdB |

Brother Ed, Now, that is one study that I have read through, "Experiencing God." (Frankly, I was surprised when it came out of the SBC -- and I can say that because I are one. :-) Most of our studies and Sunday School quarterlies are pretty insipid and shallow stuff. Once, as a junior chaplain at a local prison the board of directors wanted me to use that material for Bible study. They gave me the quarterly on Romans. Imagine, all of Romans in 12 weeks! I think Martyn Lloyd-Jones didn't make it through in less than five years!) Anyway, I always love the stuff that grinds through scripture, even if not expositorily. Blackaby and King do a good topical study (though, of course, I still don't find myself always entirely pursuaded with everything they say). Thank you for your post, brother Ed. In Him, Doc |
