Greetings Steve! I would be curious as to what part of Rick Warren's methodology you disagree with? It is difficult to discuss abstracts. Perhaps concrete examples would clarify from where we are each coming. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim Let me say I don't care for Rick Warren's books, I have many reasons that I won't go into, but let me just say they are not my cup of tea. Experiencing God by Henry Blackby and Claude King is similar to Rick Warren's book. However Experiencing God has never reached the acclaim or usage of Rick Warren’s. That breaks my heart and in my mind forces the question, why? Why would two book seeking the same “stated” objective being at a similar level of writing skill and style and being of the same quality not be accepted equally. Could it be their actual objectives weren’t the same? It is my opinion that Experiencing God offers a most excellent Biblical approach to the raised question. In Rick Warren’s book I see ideas that have proven successful for him and perhaps others, however in Experiencing God I see Biblical realities that have Biblical results. Biblical results do not always equal what society and even the church world considers successful. I wish everyone in this discussion would read Experiencing God and then continue this discussion. I suspect it would take a different tone. EdB |

Greetings EdB! I haven't read 'Experiencing God'! But, this is an example of what I have been saying, because one has sold more, must it be bad? :-) Perhaps the marketing was just better. :-) I understand that there are certain books that at certain times can touch some people more than others, but I don't understand the strength of people's dislike for Rick Warren. I quess I never will unless someone will go into detail and explain it! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim I didn't say because it sold more, that it was bad. I said in my opinion one dealt with Biblical realities while the other offered techniques that have worked for Rick Warren and perhaps others. Perhaps your right the reason Rick Warren's book sold more may have been that the marketing was far better. Which sort of leads me back to two authors objectives. Were the two author's objectives the same? While both claim to be books to quide the church and individuals into a closer relationship with God is that in fact the objective in both books? EdB |

Greetings EdB! It is very difficult to evaluate your stand without specifics my friend! :-) I have read "The Purpose Driven Church" several times and found it to be Biblical. But, it still sounds to me like your saying that because one did a better job marketing, it is somehow less worthy! ;-) Perhaps there is a need for both books! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Tim I understand what you saying about specifics, however in this case let me say I think the two books while claiming to have the same objectives were written for different reasons. If you like Rick Warren's work okay as I said it is not my cup of tea. EdB |

When I first started to attend my cell group meetings, I did the latter part of Experiencing God as the cell had started the study sometime before I joined them. Of course I was not very keen then for I was searching about who is this God rather than what I should do to experience God. Anyway, as time past, one day my Pastor recommended Rick Warren's book and suddenly the whole church was talking about the book and arrangements were made that we may purchase the book at a discount. Then we were suppose to do the program in the cell groups meetings. My cell leader was also fortunate that we were able to get our hands not only the book but also a teaching video CD of Pastor Rick and workbook as well. We went through the course. At the same time I was also reading "Foundation for righteous living" by Derek Prince. As for me, I believed I grew more ( in the sense of the word) with Pastor Prince's book than the other two books and exercises. Pastor Prince in that book helped me to believe by faith. I believe I understood grace. I believed that the holy spirit is in me guiding my every move. So, why am I so concerned about what I need to do to experience God or to do what's of God's purpose. If God wants me to do something, I will be led to it and I will know if I'm being led cos' many times, situations just arised that I will be doing God's work or asked to help out the church without much thoughts or expectations eventhough I'm very new to the church then. It just come. I found that the exercises in Experiencing God were more of getting me to remember bible verses. As for Pastor Rick's contents I thought they were rather "works" especially if we were to do the exercises of the "question to consider" at the end of every chapter. It comes back to the same question of "do we work for our salvation? If we follow the two books, I think these books tell us to "work". Worse is when we try to do exactly what was written, we may turn out a tired, disillusioned and totally burnt out christian. I may be wrong but I believed that what I need to do is to 1st believe, then love and be loved, fellowship with God, learn and understand the Word and He will do the rest. What I will get, what He wants me to do, the holy spirit will let me know in His "timming". Not that I did not benefit from the two books. I think there were too much hype over them. Just my thoughts. God Bless. |

I totally agree there is way to much hype within the Christian community over many books. I disagree that Experiencing God was a "works" book where you memorized scripture. First faith without works is dead. Secondly if we are going to learn and memorize anything should it not be scripture? I think you missed the whole thrust of Experiencing God, Blackby wasn't trying to negate the work of the Holy Spirit but in fact was emphasizing His work and the authors used scripture to teach each believer how to be more in tune with the Holy Spirit and His leading to accomplish that. I find many people today that do not have a 'one on one' relationship with God their Father. They have never heard His voice speaking to them. Their communication with God is limited to one way prayer and discernment of God's will from scripture. Experiencing God urges and teaches the student to develop a meaningful relationship with the Living God our Father. The authors used the lessons found in scripture to teach their students how to develop a personal relationship with God, a relationship that is real and meaningful. A relationship where you are no longer along, no longer in fear, no longer in doubt because you have a love relationship with the Heavenly Father. I'm sorry you did not pick this up from the teaching. However I'm certain a meaningful relationship with God can be learned without this book. Scripture tells us we have everything we need to find and develop that relationship. First we have to sacrifice all and seek the Kingdom of God. That seems to be "the" stumbling block in the walk of many. EdB |

Greetings EdB, I am not saying the books are no good. On the contrary, I admitted that I learned quite a bit going thru the books. But then again, if we look at John 6:44-47 44“No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last day. 45It is written in the Prophets: ‘They will all be taught by God. Everyone who listens to the Father and learns from him comes to me. 46No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father. 47I tell you the truth, he who believes has everlasting life. So if God does not want me, no matter how hard I try, I will not go to Him but because he wants all of us, we will be taught and raised by Him ( perhaps in ways that I do not even comprehend). I believe that I am growing at His leisure. I do not feel the need to this and that to seek His favor. Except for a few things like tithes and services to the church which are either biblically stated or when I sensed that God wants me to MOVE! I move. If I am going to do everything the books tells me and every book that I read, would it no longer be a chore instead. For e.g. Purpose Driven. Were we not set 40 days to do what Pastor Rick wants us to do? There is a timetable. Now if I am a very gungho person, reading Purpose and Experiencing God together. I must do this and that. Where is the enjoyment of being loved. We lose the whole essence of God's Love. Seek 1st the Kingdom of God and things shall be added to you. He did not say when and how but He will. He did not say you must do this and that and then things shall be added you. He will guide me at His own pace. No need to cramp all the things during the tenure of reading a book. All we need is to believe, to understand that we are already loved. After having gone through about 2 thirds of bible ( have yet to complete cover to cover) I already sensed His love. Faith comes by hearing and not works. Roman 10:17 17Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word of Christ. Another e.g is prayer. I don't know about US but here, we tend to start the prayer with thanks and then pow! - all our petitions. Its commonly shared that when we ask, ask and ask, He will answer. What if He does not? Then we will say oh, because you did not do enough that's why, your prayers are not answered. Wrong? but that's what is happening here. Yes, I do sacrifice and seek the Kingdom of God but to sacrifice all? How far will you go? Will you like Abraham sacrifice your kids? If we do, we have totally negate what Christ had done i.e. to put himself up as a sacrificial lamb FOR us. Mark 12:28-34 28One of the teachers of the law came and heard them debating. Noticing that Jesus had given them a good answer, he asked him, “Of all the commandments, which is the most important?” 29“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one.[e] 30Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’[f] 31The second is this: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’[g]There is no commandment greater than these.” 32“Well said, teacher,” the man replied. “You are right in saying that God is one and there is no other but him. 33To love him with all your heart, with all your understanding and with all your strength, and to love your neighbor as yourself is more important than all burnt offerings and sacrifices.” 34When Jesus saw that he had answered wisely, he said to him, “You are not far from the kingdom of God.” And from then on no one dared ask him any more questions. I do not feel the need to memorize the scriptures. All I need is to know is what it is about . Where it is, I can always find with today's technology. Search engine. All provided by God! God Bless. |

NASB Ephesians 2:10 For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them. AMPLIFIED Ephesians 2:10 For we are God's [own] handiwork (His workmanship), recreated in Christ Jesus, [born anew] that we may do those good works which God predestined (planned beforehand) for us [taking paths which He prepared ahead of time], that we should walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us to live]. Grace to you, Kalos |

Ephisians 2: 8-10 8For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God– 9not by works, so that no one can boast. 10For we are God's workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. When we abide in Him, we will do good works and not try to do good works so that we will abide in Him. If I am wrong in understanding these verses, please let me know. |
