Hi New Creature, Now doesn’t that just beat all? That sounds like the church that I went to before I was saved! Years ago, after I believed and trusted in Jesus as my own personal Savoir, I was looking for a church that actually expounded on teaching the Word of God, because I couldn’t seem to get enough of it! I came to find out that they are few and far between using an example from Scripture. Acts 20:11 When he therefore was come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and talked a long while, even till break of day, so he departed. Now days, people don’t appear to have the hunger that I did when I was a new born in Christ; the desires today are closer to that of one who is stillborn and this puzzles me greatly. 1 Peter 2:2 As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: This desire wasn’t something that I had to drum up on my own anymore then one would have to teach an infant how to cry when it is hungry. My hardest problem was finding a church that could keep me filled up with God’s Word. I was starting to grow quite rapidly and the pabulum that I was being feed didn’t satisfy my growing needs. I had a very hard time finding a church that had a pastor teacher that could dig into the deep thing of God, and the baby bottle routine wasn’t doing the trick anymore. There is a real need for pastor teachers in this country that are willing to study and be able to crank out Bible doctrine, on a consistent bases. They need to spend more time digging into Scripture with a good sound background in the original languages so that they can teach lay people things that they can’t find on their own. One of the big problems is that the congregations think that a pastor is supposed to be a wet nurse and a door mat and he should be there for all their little nicks and bruises. The way I see it God wants us to be sustained by Him and His word but the problem is, what pastor has time enough to do both? Pastors are too busy with changing dippers, as it were, and kissing bruised knees or tied up with meaningless programs and there isn’t enough time in a day to do everything. It takes about five to eight hours of intensive study in God’s word to be able to have a good one hour message; and most congregations won’t let a pastor study that long with out interruptions. It’s no wonder are churches are getting sidetracked into the programs and other things, we are to the point where teaching the Bible is just taking up the slack in a nice mutual admiration society. This problem started to happen in the first century church and they dealt with it. Acts 6:1-4 And in those days, when the number of the disciples was multiplied, there arose a murmuring of the Grecians against the Hebrews, because their widows were neglected in the daily ministration. 2Then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said, It is not reason that we should leave the word of God, and serve tables. 3Wherefore, brethren, look ye out among you seven men of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom, whom we may appoint over this business. 4But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Acts 6:4 But we will give ourselves continually to prayer, and to the ministry of the word. Our ministers are having everything dumped in their laps and it wasn’t meant to be that way originally. Ephes. 4:11-14 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; 12For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: 14That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Singing is a very important part of almost every service but when disaster strikes, in ones life, all the singing in the world isn’t going to sustain you like Bible doctrine that's been metabolized into ones soul. Luke 4:4 And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. In most churches, half of the service is dedicated to music, and then we get a little thirty to forty five minute message that actually has about fifteen minutes of actual Biblical facts and promises. I think if our church services were turned around that we would see a great change in this country. We need to get back to more dependence on God’s Word with pastors that are able to crake it out more then, supposedly, one hour a week. I’m in trouble now, CDBJ |

CDBJ You said "This desire wasn’t something that I had to drum up on my own anymore then one would have to teach an infant how to cry when it is hungry." For clarity let me say the ‘desire’ your talking about is the desire to study, hear and learn the Word. I believe the answer to why others don't have this is they “aren't really saved". Most have responded to an emotional appeal that made them react as the preacher instructed, they might even believe in Jesus but they aren't making Him Lord, Master of their lives. In many cases instead of being His bond servant they want to make Jesus their bond servant. Having Him fetch what ever their hearts desire. I have observed in my life and in many others that when a person is really saved they develop a hunger, a thirst for the word that can not be satisfied any other way than by getting into the Word. This is how the Holy Spirit draws us. I once watched over a 1000 people come to the altar after a tear jerking illustration and an admonishment to meet Jesus. There was no mention of sin, repentance, submitting ones life to Christ, the Blood for the remission of sin, the crucifixion, resurrection, or the forgiveness of sin. When everyone got to the altar the preacher prayed in essence “Heavenly Father welcome these into your kingdom” and then he had everyone rise and told them they were new creations they just had been "born again" and they need to plug into a “good” church, to which he added this is a “GOOD” church of course the rest of the congregation tittered and applauded i approval. That was it. I know in this case many of the people were already regular attenders they just wanted to be close to the preacher. However I think it safe to say for any that weren’t previously saved I can't see anyway they were, yet if asked they would all say they were. EdB |
