1 | HOW COULD JESUS BE A DESCENDANT OF DAVID | Bible general Archive 1 | EdB | 72123 | ||
Steve I did do some research on this. Of the more than twenty trusted commentators I reviewed not one eluded to this. I did find a reference to the idea in Nelson's New Illustrated Bible Commentary, which totally surprised me. I’m a Pastor and carry a masters in theology (neither of which I speak about on the forum) and my wife a doctorate, we both teach at a bible college along with pastoring a church. I mention my wife’s and my training not to brag nor to say between us we know everything but rather to say we have taken more than a simple cursory view of this. I had never heard of this before and my wife vaguely recalls hearing something. While we both can see and understand the theory behind this we still doubt it’s validity. First if this did occur one would think there would be some mention of it in Scripture or Jewish tradition/folklore. Traditional Jewish teaching hold this to be a promise of the coming of the promised Messiah rather than event that actually occurred. From everything I have read/searched up to this point there is no other mention of this until we see the prophecy fulfilled by Jesus’ birth in Matthew. Secondly the biggest stumbling point many find in the belief of Jesus is his virgin birth, a scientific impossibility. To try and present a second virgin birth on the assumption that God had to fulfill this prophecy within the Ahaz’s lifetime is almost defenseless as it only based on assumption and therefore adds doubt to the Jesus’ virgin birth. Why would God add question to question? Thirdly secular mythology is void of any reference to this event. Usually secular history/mythology replicates valid Bible events in any attempt by the adversary to down play the actual occurrence. Whether this happened as you say or didn’t as I believe it should not effect how true Christians view Jesus’ birth, however I can see how it could be repugnant to some and may even add ammunition to non believers. I think that is the reason Lockman restricted the thread. I will continue to research this and see what information I come up with. I will let you know. Interesting! EdB |

Hi, EdB; Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I'll see Dr. Soards again next week and will ask him how he responds to what I've posted and to the objections that have been raised. I do wish someone would address the very specific words of Isaiah and the context - which concerns judgment on Israel, not the future deliverance is Israel. To my eye, there is simply nothing in Isaiah's words to suggest that this event was anything but what he said it was - a sign to Ahaz. If Matthew had not referred to it, would anyone assume that this was a messianic prophecy? I don't know. Well, it's an interesting discussion. I would hate to think that taking Isaiah at his word would be a stumbling block to anyone. Jesus was born of a virgin; he's no less the Son of God even if it turns out that God did choose to re-use that particular sign. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

Steve You raised an interesting question about how anyone would view this as a prophecy pointing toward the Messiah had it not been for Matthew. I often wonder about that myself, for instance as far as I know everyone has always looked at Genesis 3:15 as the prophecy of a coming Messiah yet I see it more as statement of the ongoing relationship between man and serpents. I can see the Messanic prophecy there but on first reading I truthfully saw it as nothing more than man and serpents relationship. God truely does quicken the eyes of those that seek Him. EdB |

Hi, EdB; Good illustration. I imagine Matthew going through a similar process, recalling a past event and saying "wow, that takes on an entirely new meaning in light of what we've seen." But I'm certainly willing to admit that the traditional understanding might be correct. I'm sure that when I get to Heaven, I'll be humbled to learn how many things I got wrong. I'll feel badly until I see all my brothers and sisters in Christ in the same pickle. How can anyone live without grace? Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |
