Retxar Your right on target. The thing that amazes me is what is called wine on the Bible is so distant from what we call wine. Grape juice left to ferment will probably spoil before it becomes wine, however if it does make it the natural sugar content in the grapes will stop the process when the alcoholic content approaches 1 percent. Then the resulting product would have a shelf life of less than the few days. Reformer Joe and I have been around this pole a few times and each time I believe I’m able to prove what Jesus made at the wedding of Cana would not be considered wine by today’s standards. Wine of Biblical times was made from crushed dried grapes that would be very similar to our fruit rollups that were then reconstituted into juice by the addition of water. The idea grape juice was allowed to ferment for preservation purposes is totally without support, since as I said before it there was a better than average chance the grape juice would spoil, secondly with the addition of refined sugar the alcoholic content would be so low the juice would spoil anyway. Retxar I believe you right our God would not provide wine that has been proven, by modern medical, to kill thousands of brain cells. EdB |

retxar I like the comments found in the Full Life Bible on this issue. There are hazards associated with alcohol that are just being discovered now. Jesus by His very nature would have been aware of them. Weddings were a very social event and since most married around the same age the assumption that pregnant women were in attendance is not far reaching. Modern medicine has recently proven alcohol to be very destructive to an unborn baby. I can not believe Jesus knowing this would make something that destructive available at the wedding which probably had pregnant women in attendance. Alcohol being nearly tasteless adds little to the flavor of any beverage, that fact supports the assumption that people seek out alcohol for the effects of alcohol rather than taste. The effects of alcohol do not enhance any trait the Bible tells is desirable in our lives. In fact the opposite is true alcohol diminishes may of these traits and in some case incapacitates them completely. Therefore to my view alcohol is counter productive to everything taught in the Bible. On that basis alone I believe when the bible uses the word wine unless it is referring to it in a negative connotation it is talking about non alcoholic fruit juice. You keep up the good work! EdB |
