RAVEN and John Reformed, Good Day to you! I noticed that the question regarding speaking in tongues got into the subject of it being nessesary to be baptized in order to be saved. I have a question on this subject Reference Luke 23:32 through 43. (32)...Two others also, who were criminals,... (42)...Jesus, Remember me when You come in Your Kingdom. (43)..., Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in paradise. My question is, and not challenging you but would just like to know, was the criminal excused from baptism? If the criminal was from that region he would have heard of John the baptist wouldn't he? That may be an unfair question because we do not know where the criminal was from. I would welcome comments from anyone on the forum. Much Love in Christ, Cyclist |

Hello Cyclist, I believe the thief on the cross was excused from baptism for the following reason, When Jesus was here on the earth He had authority to forgive sins. As an example I cite these scriptures, Matt 9:5 "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, and walk' 6 "But so that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins"--then He *said to the paralytic, "Get up, pick up your bed and go home." also a second and third witness of the same account , Mark 2:10 , Luke 5:24 So was it easier for the Master to say your sins are forgiven, or this day you will be with me in paradise? hope this is helpful, wordoer |

Why do you say that Jesus had the authority to forgive sins only while He was on earth? The passage you cite is totally unrelated to the thief on the cross, in any case. Jesus told him that he would be with Him in paradise by means of his profession of faith in the King on the Cross, not in spite of his lack of baptism. Now don't misunderstand me: baptism is a commandment to be obeyed. It is not just a "nice extra." We also have to doubt the salvation of those who absolutely refuse to be baptised. Profession of faith and baptism are certainly linked together, and the immediacy of baptism in most cases is quite apparent. However, to say that it is the baptism that completes regeneration is not supported by the weight of biblical evidence to the contrary. --Joe! |

Dear beleivers with me in Christ Jesus, Thank you for all of the input on the subject of baptism. From all of the postings I've reached the understanding, and correct me if I am wrong, that the only way to obtain salvation in by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Baptism is necessary for those who beleive in Christ and learn, being taught from the Word of God, that baptism is an act of washing away of sins and that it is done in the name of Jesus. In my search on this subject I found this passage. I thought it was interesting that it was necessary for these to be "re-baptized" in the name of Jesus. What does this mean? If it seems that I'm dragging this subject on, I apoligize, but I would appreciate any comments from the forum. Acts 19:1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples. Acts 19:2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit." Acts 19:3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism." Acts 19:4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus." Acts 19:5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 19:6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. Jesus is alive, the same yesterday, today, and forever!
