1 | who is pure from sin | 1 John 1:9 | childoftheking | 37800
Yes we to strive to live a sinliess life. God has given us a way out of temptation as the Bible says in 1Cor 10:13 “No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it.” But who can live a sinless life? 1John 1:8 “If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us. “ Proverbs 20:9 “Who can say, "I have cleansed my heart, I am pure from my sin"? This question is not only a challenge to any man in the world to prove himself sinless, whatever he pretends, but a lamentation of the corruption of mankind, even that which remains in the best. Alas! Who can say, "I am sinless?’’ Observe, 1. Who the persons are that are excluded from these pretensions—all, one as well as another. Here, in this imperfect state, no person whatsoever can pretend to be without sin. Adam could say so in innocency, and saints can say so in heaven, but none in this life. Those that think themselves as good as they should be cannot, nay, and those that are really good will not, dare not, say this. 2. What the pretension is that is excluded. We cannot say, We have made our hearts clean. Though we can say, through grace, "We are cleaner than we have been,’’ yet we cannot say, "We are clean and pure from all remainders of sin.’’ Or, though we are clean from the gross acts of sin, yet we cannot say, "Our hearts are clean.’’ Or, though we are washed and cleansed, yet we cannot say, "We ourselves made our own hearts clean;’’ it was the work of the Spirit. Or, though we are pure from the sins of many others, yet we cannot say, "We are pure from our sin, the sin that easily besets us, the body of death which Paul complained of in (MH) Rom. 7:24. “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” Peace and Love bgg |

bgg, No one can live a sinless life. Only Christ did that. He was able to do. We can't because we are weak. Searcher

Thanks Searcher, I probably should have asked; who can, after one is saved? bgg |

bgg, No one can be sinless after he is saved, unless there was no time to sin. You cited one verse -- look at the context of the last part of 1 John 1. Searcher

Searcher, I agree with you that no one can be sinless after he/she is saved. There's a big difference however, between to "commit a sin" and to "live in sin". All sin is bad but we're going to "slip up" on occasion even though we don't want to, but thank God for Jesus. 1John 2:1 "My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:" It wasn't I who cited one verse. If you notice in the post of my question,(which was in response to another post) I had cited the last 3 verses of 1 John. John says a lot of "if we" in which the "we" is speaking of all believers. 2:21 "I have not written unto you because ye know not the truth, but because ye know it, and that no lie is of the truth." Thanks bgg |

To live in sin Kalos... it's an expression.... For instance; What would you call it when two people live together outside of wedlock? Constantly doing the same sin. Give me a break. Does every word that you write come out of scripture?
8 | who is pure from sin | 1 John 1:9 | Norrie | 38075
I just went back a few posts to see what ya'll were talking about. Isn't what you're referring to is a sin lifestyle? OK, when we are reborn, our flesh is not immediately saved, that is a continual process accd to Rom 12:2, right? So can a person be saved and still be a lifestyle such as homosexuality? Adultery? Drug or alcohol addiction? Promiscious sex? If a person still has any of these sins dominating their life, are they saved still but have a stronghold that needs to be broken or what? When you are reborn, hopefully all your vices will go away but that is not necessarily the case, is it? Anybody can answer. |

Norrie, I know a man, well and personally, who was saved. But he was an alcoholic. He did not recover from his addiction in the twinkling of an eye. After he was saved, he had relapses and got as drunk as a fiddler. He would repent and vow never to touch liquor again. In another week or two, he hit the sauce again. This pattern continued for nearly a year after he became a Christian. According to his own testimony, he found release in this way: He said he finally came to the stark realization of what the real problem was -- that it was always he who vowed, he who promised, he who willed, that he would not touch liquor again. So he prayed. He confessed that he was powerless over alcohol. He quit making promises he could not keep and totally surrendered his will to the will of God, asking God to take over every aspect of his life. He gave himself up in total, absolute surrender to God. He found the answer; God healed him. He has not touched a drop of booze in over 15 years; he is now a minister, and a very effective one, in service to Jesus Christ. --Hank

I'm on a forum w/many gays who claim to be Christians. I guess that's a matter between them and God? But there are some that say things like David and Jonathan were lovers and shoot down all the verses that condemn homosexuality, in other words they just pervert the Gospel. But then there are some that really sound sincere, just maybe misguided, actually believe it's natural and are monogamous. So I got to wondering about them, which led to thinking about me too. I know when I first got saved, I had so many things wrong w/me that it took a long time to be delivered from them. I didn't quite understand repentance either. So I've always wondered, did I get saved then or later, it always bugs me. I know even while I was still doing things that were considered sin like pot smoking, which I didn't see was all that wrong, just illegal, or drinking, was I saved or not and why is their sin worse than mine? I decided I won't say anybody's not saved but the ones that are in your face and into serious scripture perverting, those I seriously doubt. How much time can you spend defending your sin and still be a Christian? I confess I'm powerless over eating, esp. sweets but I've still not got delivered. Pray for me! |

Norrie: Your post raises some really good issues. I think even today you and I both look at things in our lives that are offensive to God's perfect holiness and decide for ourselves that they are "no big deal." Even in our current state of being adopted children of God, we still are much worse in our behavior than even we think we are. I have recommended this book many times on this forum, and I will do so again now because I have found it to be the most helpful and biblically-sound book on this issue of grace, faith, sin, obedience, and salvation and how they all play together in the Christian life. It is called _Righteous Sinners_ by Ron Julian, and I am going to plug christianbook.com as well simply because the book can be picked up for a couple of bucks there. It is easily worth 10 times that amount for the wealth of biblical exegesis found there, and it is so immensely practical, rather than being abstract. As for homosexuality and the Bible, Paul is pretty clear in Romans 1 that it is the highest form of being given over to depravity. I am not saying that one cannot be saved from homosexuality, but to read Paul's extreme condemnation of the practice in no uncertain terms and to simply dismiss that makes me seriously doubt the spiritual condition of anyone who says that gay is okay. Imagine someone who is a murderer going around saying that all of the prohibitions against murder are all culturally-based and that David was a murderer (Uriah), so murder is really okay. It just doesn't wash, and they are exchanging the truth of God for a lie. --Joe! |

So if someone exchanges the truth for a lie, no matter how saved they profess to be, it can't be so?
13 | who is pure from sin | 1 John 1:9 | meusing | 38148
We look to the Scriptures for the truth. The question I think should be, if we are saved, would we defend a lifestyle that is offensive to God? The Holy Spirit brings the scriptures to our memory to convict us of our sin (John 16:7-11) so that we can apply this verse and recieve cleansing. So how can we continue sinning? (Rom 6:1) |
