1 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | Morant61 | 51904
Greetings Raven! I'm not generally a big fan of the Amplified simply because I think that simply listing every possible meaning of a Greek word can be misleading without a correct understanding of grammar and usage. However, the Amplified appears to get the word 'instruments' from the context and the basic meanings of the terms used. For instance, Psalm refers to the 'plucking of a string on a bow' or 'playing a stringed instrument' (Kittels, pg. 491). It came to mean a song which was accompanied with music. 'Making melody' also refers to the playing of a stringed instrument. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

2 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | RAVEN | 51909
Tim, Again as I mentioned to Steve, the verse says "speak". And it references James 5:13 where it says sing. I don't know about this "pluck" thing, I mean their is no example is there in the New Testament bible is there. What about Colossians 3:16. It says to sing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. If anything this plucking should be done on our "heart strings" don't you think? Raven |

3 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | Morant61 | 51914
Greetings Raven! You are correct that the second phrase is modified by 'in your hearts'. Of course, this could also be translated 'with your hearts', which would not preclude musical instruments even in the second phrase. Further, if musical instruments aren't included, why use two words, which would basically mean the same thing in the context. In other words, why say "sing and sing"? However, the first phrase, which includes the word 'psalmos', definitely would include musical instrumentation (by definition). The Bible on a whole doesn't say a whole lot about music of any kind. Of course, the Psalms mention the use of a variety of instruments in worship. While, the New Testament definitely does not prohibit their use. This falls into the same category as the debate about singing hmyns or chorouses, different strokes for different folks! :-) Personally, I play a little piano, and I love to worship by playing. 4 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | Hank | 51924
Tim, as you of course know full well, the 150 psalms which constitute a book of the Bible, are replete with references to all sorts of musical instruments that were in common use in the ancient Semitic world. It seems both unreasonable and unlikely that God would proscribe the usage of them as instruments of adoration and praise to Him in our time. There really isn't any scriptural foundational support for using a cappella music alone and hence banning instrumental music as an adjunct. --Hank
5 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | Morant61 | 51927
Greetings Hank! Oh, I fully agree my friend! Music is a wonderful blessing, one which I try to use to glorify my God with every chance I get! :-) I have all of my valuable instruments with reach of me right now - my computer, my books, and my piano. It is my goal in life to glorify God with each of them! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

6 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | Hank | 51929
Well, Tim, I'll have you know you aren't the only Mozart-in-the-making! I play a little classical guitar. Well, the guitar is standard size, but my playing is sub-standard; hence, my use of the word 'little.' Christopher Parkening has made a wonderful CD (and cassette tape) of Christian hymns which he renders beautifully on the classical guitar. My songs of joy and praise to the Lamb are not nearly so dulcent coming from my classical guitar as Parkening's, but I pray that they are acceptable to Him just the same. --Hank
7 | Mechanical Instruments? | Eph 5:19 | Morant61 | 51940
Greetings Hank! I know the feeling! The last time I played for church, I had a major cold and had taken some strong medicine prior to church. Anyway, I was supposed to accompany my 10 year old daughter when I completely forgot how to play the song! ;-) I'm glad the Lord looks on our hearts, and not our performance! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

Hello Tim Well at least you had an excuse for your "senior moment." :-D I also play guitar, and it's terrible when you go blank -- for no reason -- in front of everyone -- while you're trying to lead. Come to think of it, I've had those moments behind the pulpit. Steve |
