1 | God and His creation | 1 Cor 7:1 | Lampstand | 173042
The expression “not to touch a woman” here means avoiding physical contact with a woman for sexual gratification. Since Paul had already condemned fornication, he was now referring to sexual relations within the marriage arrangement. Therefore, Paul was now recommending the single state. (1 Corinthians 6:9, 16, 18; compare Genesis 20:6; Proverbs 6:29.) A little further on, he wrote: “Now I say to the unmarried persons and the widows, it is well for them that they remain even as I am.” (1 Corinthians 7:8) Paul was unmarried, perhaps a widower.—1 Corinthians 9:5. Likely the Christians in Corinth had come into contact with Greek philosophy, of which certain schools lauded extreme asceticism, or self-denial. Might that have been why the Corinthians asked Paul if it would be “well” for Christians to avoid all sexual intercourse? Paul’s answer did not reflect Greek philosophy. (Colossians 2:8) Unlike Catholic theologians, he nowhere recommended a celibate ascetic life in a monastery or convent, as if single persons were particularly holy and could contribute to their own salvation by their life-style and prayers. Paul recommended singleness “in view of the necessity here with us.” (1 Corinthians 7:26) He might have been referring to the difficult times Christians were going through, which could be compounded by marriage. (1 Corinthians 7:28) His counsel to unmarried Christians was: “It is well for them that they remain even as I am.” To widowers, he stated: “Are you loosed from a wife? Stop seeking a wife.” Of a Christian widow, he wrote: “She is happier if she remains as she is, according to my opinion. I certainly think I also have God’s spirit.”—1 Corinthians 7:8, 27, 40. No Compulsion to Remain Single God’s holy spirit was undoubtedly guiding Paul when he gave this counsel. His whole presentation of celibacy and marriage shows balance and restraint. He does not make it a matter of faithfulness or unfaithfulness. It is, rather, a question of free choice, with the balance tipping in favor of singleness for those who are able to remain chaste in that state. Immediately after stating “it is well for a man not to touch a woman,” Paul added: “Yet, because of prevalence of fornication, let each man have his own wife and each woman have her own husband.” (1 Corinthians 7:1, 2) After advising unmarried persons and widows to “remain even as I am,” he was quick to add: “But if they do not have self-control, let them marry, for it is better to marry than to be inflamed with passion.” (1 Corinthians 7:8, 9) Again, his counsel to widowers was: “Stop seeking a wife. But even if you did marry, you would commit no sin.” (1 Corinthians 7:27, 28) This balanced counsel reflects freedom of choice. Paul showed that both marriage and singleness are gifts from God. “I wish all men were as I myself am. Nevertheless, each one has his own gift from God, one in this way, another in that way.” (1 Corinthians 7:7) He doubtless had in mind what Jesus said. After establishing that marriage came from God, Jesus showed that willing singleness for the sake of serving Kingdom interests is a particular gift: “Not all men make room for the saying, but only those who have the gift. For there are eunuchs that were born such from their mother’s womb, and there are eunuchs that were made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs that have made themselves eunuchs on account of the kingdom of the heavens. Let him that can make room for it make room for it.”—Matthew 19:4-6, 11, 12. |

2 | all because sin ( POISON) | 1 Cor 7:1 | corin | 173099
Base on what the messages from Paul,he advised us to look upon our own circumstances(human with sin) ? if, 1. single - choice a 2. married - choice b 3. widower - choice c Paul whole presentation of celibacy and marriage shows BALANCE and RESTRAINT in order we in this human with sin(poison) era might gain blessing ultimately for our eternal life. If we are in the circumstances(human without sin) where God creating his wonderful creature, we are definitely blessed with the marriage but not good to be single ? because GOD said SO? |

Since no one except for Christ is a "human without sin" (Heb 4:15) ... your question is mute.

Genesis 2:18 says ... Then the LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him." 1. God COMMANDMENT is extremely powerful? 1 Corinthians 7:1 Now concerning the things about WHICH YOU WROTE, it is good for a man not to touch a woman. 2. Paul is understandable and humble enough as a channel of peace to guide us as human to the eternal blessing? 3. Ultimately if we RESPONSIBLE of our own action and choices we will always bless ? |

Corin, dear user, haven't we been on this same theme long enough? Unless I am much mistaken, you have asked essentially the same questions and expressed virtually the same concerns on the same topic over and over. ..... While you are certainly welcome to use the Forum to ask Bible questions (that's one of its prime purposes), and not one wishes to thwart your keen interest in God's word by any means, please do take care to make sure your questions are questions and not merely statements, as is the case with this correspondence to which this post is a response. And, having asked your question on a specific topic, please read the responses it fetches and then move on to something else. The Bible contains score upon score of subjects. Why not diversify and learn something about a number of them? God bless you as a "baby Christian" who is seeking to grow in the faith. Be as one of the newborn infants who "long for the pure spiritual milk that by it you may grow up to salvation -- if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is good." (see 1 Peter 2:2,3). --Hank

Hey there, I'm new here, and I don't know you. I read some of your other posts, and you just seem so sad. You also seem like you wanna give off firey questions and be justified... I'm not trin' to judge you, I'm just talking about the feeling I'm getting. If I'm way off the mark, just ignore me, I'll go sit down... But, if I'm not, well, sometimes, (and this is hard for me too) ya just gotta let go and let God. He's there, really, really there, and he sure can have a quiet voice sometimes. Don't fight him, just Let Him. Just take whatever you're struggleing with, wrap it up in a big 'ol bundle and say, "God! This is for you!" and let it go to Him. Sometimes, if I'm really struggleing with something, I'll sit down with my Bible, and tell God, "Lord, I'm having a problem, and I want you to show me it's all OK..." and just open that book at random, and start reading wherever my eyes hit the page. And don't you know that when I've done that, and been truly in dispair, and at the end of my rope, God answers. I've done it when feeling petulant, or when I knew the answer deep down and gotten nada... So I figure God don't want us to waste his time neither! Ha! Sorry about the wordyness, it's just I don't like to see anyone sufferin' when Jesus already did that. He is who He is, the rest is just homework. Peace in God, Amanda |

Hi Amanda; I tried the random approach to the Bible as you suggested, “and just open that book at random, and start reading wherever my eyes hit the page.” That got me in a lot of trouble and a lot of work! Genesis 6:14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; rooms shalt thou make in the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch. I couldn’t find any gopher wood so I built one out of steel and it took me over five years to finish it! Big project and a big headache but it sailed nice! The guy that I sold it to, after it wore me out for 12 years, is supposed to be sailing it around the world this year. No Thanks! I think a better approach to reading the Bible would be well-organized study habits; starting with the New Testament and asking the Lord for guidance as one reads through it several time before going to the Old Testament. It’s residual Bible doctrine that we retain in our soul that helps us in time of need. The method that you describe is like preparing for a hurricane after it hits and leaving it to chance that you might be right. 2 Tim. 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. Have a great day, CDBJ |

CDBJ, Hey there! Sorry if I made it sound like "random reading was all you should do. I guess I just assumed there would be regular reading as well. The random approach I was speaking of has had stunning results (for me) when in great hardship. Example: My almost two year old daughter started vomiting uncontrollably. IV's and meds in hospital, sent home. Starts to slip into diabetic coma. Rushed back to hospital. Doc's can't tell me what's going on, my little baby is living off IV fluids, and for days and days we would get her to hold a little something down, only for there to be another major setback. This little baby was SICK. In utter depression and dispair one night, I wandered down to the hospital chapel and fell on my knees for a while. Recieving no comfort, I picked up the book next to me and asked God, "Please, let me know my little girl will be OK." I turned to the passage (and pardon me for not knowing the quote exactly... I should probably learn it!) where Jesus comanded the man to gef off his bed and walk, for he was well. How perfect was that? I practicly floated back to my daughter's room, and never truly sunk low again. Did she recieve healing at that moment? No, but God had all but told me to settle down, she'll be fine. That's what I meant, if this (man, woman?) is having an absolute black moment in his/her life, it has worked for me. And study your Bible too! :) |

Greetings; All Scripture has a primary interpretation and “many” have a practical application. To say that the verse you made reference to meant that your child would be Ok was a real stretch of the meaning of that verse to say the least. John 5:8-9 Jesus saith unto him, Rise, take up thy bed, and walk. [9] And immediately the man was made whole, and took up his bed, and walked: and on the same day was the sabbath. Your story and the outcome is very nice and it gives us all a nice warm fuzzy feeling but that Scripture doesn’t confirm your ending as consistently working out the same way for everyone all the time the way your situation did. I guess what I am trying to say is that one can’t take your application of that verse to the bank every time and get the same results. The following verses work every time and are actually commanded. Hebrews 4:16 Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need. 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. Not everyone receives the answer they would like to hear about the health of a loved one but the Lord knew in eternity pass exactly what would happen to each and everyone of us and He made provisions for all of those that love Him. Not all things appear to be good, from our prospective, but God can make things work together for His intrinsic good. Romans 8:28 And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. The word “good”, in the English of the previous verse is translated from the Koine Greek word, AGATHOS, and it means a good that has intrinsic value. Example: Pure gold has intrinsic value but can be shaped in some ugly ways and forms that don’t look too good to us on the surface; let’s say a casting of a “drowned rat”; to me that sounds pretty repulsive and it would appear to be worthless and bad but it still contains pure gold, which on today’s market is worth about 636 dollars an ounce. Sometimes I make things about as clear as mud, right? Have a nice day, CDBJ |
