woman of favor ... again -both passages are examples is the gift of known tongues. -we do not have the ability to do any of these gifts, because we may all choose to be an ear and not not an eye (1 Cor 12:16) -according to 1 Cor 14, which is superior - prophecy or tongues? Steve |

2 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | EdB | 10516
Steve you made a statement here that these were known tongues. In Acts2:4 we don't know what happened. I suspect everyone praised the Lord and by the Power of the Holy Spirit each man heard their utterances in his own tongue, rather than everyone speaking in a different language and no one being able to hear what was being said in the confusion. In Cor. 12:10 we don’t know exactly what Paul was talking about but there is no reason to believe he was limiting his discussion to just tongues of men. The word for tongues he used here is “glossa” it is the same word he used in 1 Cor. 13:1 where he definitely was talking about tongues of Angels (or unknown tongues) and tongues of men. Notice no where in the Paul’s discussion of Tongues does he use the word “ecstatic speech” which would be gibberish as many teach. He always uses the word glossa in the original which means a known tongue but opens that up with tongues of men and of angels. Thus some tongues will be understandable by someone here on earth, in other cases the tongues will not be naturally be understood by anyone here on earth and therefore would need an interpreter. There are many abuses of the gifts today. Many if not most churches use the gifts for entertainment of saints rather than ministry to unbelievers. Many believers use tongues and the other spiritual gifts not to convince unbelievers but to fortify their own faith. They need to see the manifestations to continue in their faith and this is dead wrong. Also many churches put undue importance on the spiritual gifts, they would rather have a message in tongues than see a person saved. And this is also dead wrong. I believe the gifts of the spirit are for today but they are not for in the church but rather in the market place where unbelievers can be lead to the Lord. People say there are unbelievers in the church and your right but they are unbelievers not because they do not know God but because they refuse to crucify the their flesh. |

3 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | Searcher56 | 10517
EdB, - What language do angels speak to men, is it unknown to them? - We don't know what language they speak in heaven. If it is unknown on earth, then it is fruitless to speak. - For those who speak in an unknown tongue, is it the same language for all. It would be interesting to get a linguist to listen and see if there is any pattern. Just a thought. Steve |

4 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | EdB | 10519
Steve angels do not usually speak to men and when they do, I don’t know if they speak in an unknown language or not but I do know the men understand. For us to speak in an unknown language your right would be fruitless and here is one of the abuses of tongues in the church today people speaking in tongues without interpretation. If it is authentic it will not happen. For me to pray in the my prayer closet in unknown tongues is nothing more than me allowing the Holy Spirit to pray though me. Even then I should have an general understanding of the prayer. By that I mean we don’t just go into the our prayer closet put our minds in neutral and allow gibberish to come from our mouths. We should be praying in tongues with reasoning. Why God chooses to use tongues in prayer closet situations is debated, some say it is to confuse Satan, I don’t buy that. I think sometimes we are praying about a situation and just don’t know how to pray and Holy Spirit intervenes and prays through us in unknown tongues so we don’t know all the details of what is going to take place. I do not believe we should pray for anybody in tongues unless we are willing to provide an interpretation of what we said. We see this a lot with TV evangelist praying for people. When we pray for people it should be with their understanding so they can say amen as instructed by Paul. Do not discount the gifts of the Spirit because of the abuses and misuses. Search the scripture and you will see it real and for today. |

EdB, I have never said the gift of tongues, prophesy, knowledge have been done away. But, I think we have misunderstood what God wrote through Paul. Steve |

6 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | EdB | 10526
Absolutely Steve this is one of the most abused areas of the Bible. Man has taken something God meant for worship and service and turned it into a parlor show. I think many will have much to explain because of this. In my years I have seen the gifts abused and misused in just about every way I can imagine. Flesh has been allowed to run rampant. At some of these big name revivals there is more flesh than anything else. I know one revival that is filled with the Spirit of Carnality and I can’t believe God or the Holy Spirit are even present, yet there are these supposedly wondrous manifestations of the Holy Spirit. I have a word for that, “Baloney”! Before anyone asks no I won’t name the revival. Ask God he will show you.
7 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | glory777 | 10610
Steve, I think I should just shut up because EdB puts it so much more succinctly than i can. I agree. i have seen the misuse of it, too. The only thing I don't know if I agree totally is the idea you should have some idea of what you are praying about. there have been a few (very few)times when I have felt the Holy Spirit telling me to pray and it is kind of an "OK, Here we go -don't have a clue but some situation must be needing prayer coverage." Now, I am talking about privately, while at work and not shouting it out at the top of my lungs. Ever had this happen, EdB?
8 | No speaking in tongues, no Holy Spirit? | Acts 2:4 | EdB | 10631
Absolutely the Holy Spirit puts a burden on you and you have no idea in the world what it is other than you need to pray right now. However a few times later I have had family, friends, or someone tell me about a serious situation they found themselves and how God miraculously delivered them, which occurred at exactly the moment I was impressed to pray.
