As for a [private] prayer language, I don't see this taught anywhere in the 66 books of the Bible. I've heard about a prayer language all my life, but I suspect that the idea comes from interpreting people's experiences rather than a clear verse of Scripture. We never prove the validity of the Bible by experience; we test and examine experience in light of the Bible. And since there is no mention of the word "tongues" in Acts 4, John 14, Romans 8, the book of Jude or James 3:8, I do not see how anyone could find the doctrine of a prayer language in any of these passages. I have no need that anyone explain to me what a prayer language is. As I said, I'm familiar with the concept, having heard of it my whole life. What I am not familiar with is any Scripture to back it up. Grace to you, Kalos |

Your right the bible does not specifically call it a priviate prayer language, however it is the name we have given it for those who have understood what we have recieved. Here are some scriptures to help you with the Idea that it is a prayer language. "For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God : no man understandeth him... 1 Corn 14:2 These are not ministry gifts Paul is talking about but the individual Spiritfilled believer employing the use of tongue in his prayer life. This scripture also so continues to say, howbeit int the spirit he speaketh mysteries. Moffatt's translation says he is talking divine secrets in the spirit. We also speak in tongues or our prayer language to build our selfs up in the not in our body or mind ( which is our soul) but our spirit or spiritman "He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself... 1 Corn 14:4. There are some scripture to back up a prayer language...for myself it is powerful and real. It is not to demean or take anything away from anyone else. But the power of God is real and working in the life I lead and the Holy Spirit is present and teaching all things for he is in us, with us and for us. Be blessed and I hope you find his power in your life. |

Dear servant, This matter certainly falls within the realm of Rom. 14:1:-) You say there is rightly no scriptural support for a "prayer language", yet you state that it's "given it for those who have understood what we have recieved." Seems a little arrogant or exclusive? The context of the passage in 1 Cor. 14 is dealing with the superiority of prophecy. It starts out with an imperative..."Pursue love..." I fail to see the connection to prayer here. Scripture does not support self-edification! Paul is stating the opposite. Paul says: Thess 5:17- "pray without ceasing;" Col. 4:2- "Devote yourselves to prayer, keeping alert in it with an attitude of thanksgiving;" Phil. 4:6- "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." These are just a few examples, but I don't see where Paul hints that there is some particular "prayer langauge" needed to do so? I believe God understands all dialects quite well- including English! Why would we need a special prayer languauge to communicate with Him? Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Yet many places in Acts it stated they recieved the Holy Ghost and they spake in other tongues and prophesied. Acts 19:6, Acts 8:17 Interestingly in Acts 2:37-38 it states: "Now when they ( the unsaved multitude who gathered as a result of the outpouring of the Holy Spirit and to whom Peter had preached quoting Joel's prophecy ) heard this, they wer pricked in their heart and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, men and bretheren, what shall we do? Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and he baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remisssion of sins, and ye shall recied the gift of the Holy Spirit. So acording to scripture it is not exclusive it is a matter of recieving the gift he wants to give to you. Paul also states in Romans 8:26 ...the Holy Ghost maeketh intercession for us in groanings that cannot be uttered in articulate speech. This it reference to the prayer language. Paul also state in 1 cornithians 14:18 "I thank My God, I speak with tongues more than ye all:" He follows up with some rules regarding the speaking of tongues in the congregation. I have witnessed many signs and wonders of the Gifts of the Holy Spirit, tongues, just happens to be one. However I do feel the Holy Spirit who leads and guides me in all things saying this is a mute point. I was told by our Lord to leave it alone so I will in the name of Jesus. |
