Subject: Speaking in Tongue |
Bible Note: I must have grown up in a church or environment that gave tongues a bad image. As an adult I met quite normal people who said they spoke in tongues. So, not to be prejudging I prayed that God would give me that gift if He wanted me to have it. I prayed about it a lot. I never felt that I spoke in a different language. I went on a mission trip to South America 2 years ago. In a large church we were asked if we would give a testimony and I was one ofthe volunteers. We had a wonderful Venezuelan man that traveled with us translating. He translated for the first 2 people that spoke. When I got to the front to speak, I found myself saying "me nobre is maria josefina"...and a lot more. The translator and I looked at each other and he started translating for my English speaking friends. I know that I told the people Jesus Christ was my best friend. I know I told them how lost I was before I met Him. How much God has blessed me. Only in Spanish. And I don't speak Spanish. My friends were amazed. A year later I told a pastor friend in my denomination and he said - God gave you the gift of tongues! He said that our denomination believed that speaking in tongues was when God gave you the gift to speak in another language to someone. I'm not defining it that narrowly though it was not a trivial experience. I was told by someone once that I was praying in another language. They didn't disturb me but that I was defintely not praying in English. So maybe there is a gift of praying just to Him in another special language. I do know I spoke fluent Spanish for quite awhile - and I don't know it still! |
