1 | Please explain the Trinity. | John 1:1 | Hank | 30084
Ethan, I am an English major and I can tell you frankly that your view of the English language as being "precise" is precisely not the way teachers of English view it. Masters of the English tongue will tell you that English is a colorful language, that it has an enormously large and rich vocabulary, that its grammar, particularly its syntax, is flexible and malleable, but precise? They know better than to go on record as saying that it is precise. Tim has already pointed out to you that, whereas Greek has the capability to express an entire abstract concept by the use of one Greek word, we users of English frequently must send out a dozen or so English words to capture the same thought. Here's a little homework exercise for you. Study the full meaning of the Greek word "logos" (as used in John 1:1 and translated Word.). Now try putting all the nuance of meaning of that word into a single "precise" English word. Good luck! --Hank

Hank that is why such the flack. as a novice, i am not ashamed to learn or to say that i am not learned. the word Logos is the written word, You see one Greek word is explain more precisely by two english words. it is the rehema we are really after. to break that down to a more precise meaning; it is the Spoken word of God to our spirits and soul and body. i probably didnt spell it right.LOL. Precision to me is finding a measurenemt down to the last millimeter. If i didnt have tight fitting joints i would be called, bodgy, not a proffessional trades man. with the use of the english we have found the richness and also the short falls in other languages and we can put it all in words. Because the brain works in pictures we have to break it up into emotions and then words. we can with the english, by explaining even our thoughts on paper, whereby we have a more detailed view. as a builder i need detail. i hope this explains where i am coming from. I am not saying that An english word is more precise. i am saying the the English Language is more Precise. For by many words we can break down anything and explain it.bless you |

Bless you, too, Nathan. If you can gain access to a Greek lexicon, you still might find it of some value to study the word "logos." And you are from Australia? Do they really waltz with Matilda down there? --Hank
