1 | Please explain the Trinity. | John 1:1 | EdB | 29992
Ethan Yes Joe knows the Jesus of the Mormons is a made up being, and yes he knew that the name Jesus in Hebrew was Yeshua. What he was saying was Mormons first consider Jesus to authentic and they do not view the name Jesus as corrupted. That is not saying someone on the forum didn't say the name was corrupted. They simply don't understand that names within languages often change. The name isn't corrupted it just spelled and pronounced very differently. The problem your having is you took what someone said in error as fact and your now repeating it as fact. If I said 2 plus 2 equal 5 and you repeated it would it be a fact? No, it still would be wrong but now both of us are wrong. That is what Joe was trying to tell you. Mormons as a whole do not consider the name Jesus to corrupted. Even though you heard this from a Mormon and even though you were a Mormon, the vast majority of Mormons do not hold the belief that the name of Jesus is corrupted. Proof is they even use Jesus in their name. Now to your English is better than Greek, if that is what you want to believe okay, but understand you were told truth and if you want to continue in ignorance that is your choice. Think about some English words that have so many meanings. Like "junk" that can mean anything from junk in junkyard to drugs. Or "hot can mean ‘temperature’ to ‘great’ to ‘mad’. When I say something was "hot" you can not tell if I meant it's temperature, or if it was stolen, or if was good. In Greek you don't have that problem. That is why you need so many English words to translate a Greek word. If I was translating the Greek word for "hot" I would have to say. It had a high temperature. Thus you would know I was talking about temperature rather than it being stolen. In English you would very imprecisely look to see how it was used in a sentence to figure out the meaning. Ethan I'm truly trying to be a friend!!! EdB |

Well so far you have made the most sense but i feel you are still chasing something that isnt there. I DO NOT BELIEVE THE NAME OF JESUS IS CORRUPTED. but now you have brought two Jesus in the picture to explain why it was said in the chat room. now back to greek, The reason we can play with the english is because it is so versatile as you say hot. the expression behind the word changes it. the word hot must go with a full sentance to be explained in more DETAIL to give to EXACT meaning to the word. and that is why english is so precise. most other languages dont have the expressions that english has. for this reason i am told that is why English is the hardest language to learn, Because we can say shake a leg and mean hurry up. bless you. |

Ethan, I am an English major and I can tell you frankly that your view of the English language as being "precise" is precisely not the way teachers of English view it. Masters of the English tongue will tell you that English is a colorful language, that it has an enormously large and rich vocabulary, that its grammar, particularly its syntax, is flexible and malleable, but precise? They know better than to go on record as saying that it is precise. Tim has already pointed out to you that, whereas Greek has the capability to express an entire abstract concept by the use of one Greek word, we users of English frequently must send out a dozen or so English words to capture the same thought. Here's a little homework exercise for you. Study the full meaning of the Greek word "logos" (as used in John 1:1 and translated Word.). Now try putting all the nuance of meaning of that word into a single "precise" English word. Good luck! --Hank

Hank that is why such the flack. as a novice, i am not ashamed to learn or to say that i am not learned. the word Logos is the written word, You see one Greek word is explain more precisely by two english words. it is the rehema we are really after. to break that down to a more precise meaning; it is the Spoken word of God to our spirits and soul and body. i probably didnt spell it right.LOL. Precision to me is finding a measurenemt down to the last millimeter. If i didnt have tight fitting joints i would be called, bodgy, not a proffessional trades man. with the use of the english we have found the richness and also the short falls in other languages and we can put it all in words. Because the brain works in pictures we have to break it up into emotions and then words. we can with the english, by explaining even our thoughts on paper, whereby we have a more detailed view. as a builder i need detail. i hope this explains where i am coming from. I am not saying that An english word is more precise. i am saying the the English Language is more Precise. For by many words we can break down anything and explain it.bless you |

Bless you, too, Nathan. If you can gain access to a Greek lexicon, you still might find it of some value to study the word "logos." And you are from Australia? Do they really waltz with Matilda down there? --Hank
