1 | Diff. btw receiving and being filled | Luke 11:13 | Ray | 147821 | ||
Hi keruxib 12, The question is concerned with the filling of the Holy Spirit, but what I would have you consider is a lower case "holy spirit". The Greek does not have a distinction of lower and upper case, so the Scriptures do not give us a clear understanding. I would say that the Scriptures are telling us to be filled with the holy spirit. I would say that the Scriptures are telling us to be washed by the word, filled with the word, preaching the word. The spirit that we are to be filled with are the psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Ephesians 5:16. When the word of Christ richly dwells within us we teach and admonish one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Colossians 3:16. We give thanks for all things in the name of our Lord/ Jesus Christ; Ephesians 5:20. We give thanks through Him/ to God the Father. Colossians 3:17. 1) Ephesians 3:10, "trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord." [Marginal note, Lit. proving what]. Colossians 3:16, "Let the word of Christ richly dwell within you,..." Hi Ray, I would submit that you and I are "almost" saying the same thing -- my thought is that as Jesus spoke John 4:24 "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." The spirit (ours and His)gives birth to worship and Romans 8:16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God. How does the Spirit (no distinction, but NASB) bear witness - through feeling, no, but through the Word which is the truth. The instruction to "be filled with the spirit" will result in our being "filled with are the psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Ephesians 5:16. When the word of Christ richly dwells within us we teach and admonish one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs; Colossians 3:16" as you and I have written. kerux 12 |

Hi keruxib 12, Yes, we are "almost" saying the same thing. In my own personal study I would not see Ephesians 5:19 (I believe you meant that verse rather than 16) and Colossians 3:16 as a perfect match; but that is definitely what the passages are saying. There is that connection of being filled with the spirit and letting the word richly dwell in us, which we both have written about and see. There are some other things to consider in Ephesians so that we are not deceived by "empty words", Ephesians 5:6. For instance, are we children of "light", NASB, 1977 copy, or children of "Light", NASB, 1995. For Ephesians 5:9 do we go with the NASB (l)Light or with the NKJ "fruit of the Spirit". For Ephesians 5:14 are we translating/interpreting what the word (it, NASB) says or what He says (NKJ)? In all these things, we are trying to learn what is pleasing to the Lord. Ephesians 5:10. 1) We differ in how we look at the (w)Word. When speaking of the Scriptures I use a lower case "word". For instance, John 17:17, "Sanctify them in the truth; Thy word is truth." 2) I was led today to look also at two other Scriptures. Job 32:8, "But it is a spirit in man, And the breath of the Almighty gives them understanding." Job 32:18, "For I am full of words; The spirit within me constrains me." From the heart, Ray |
