Edb - Something we can agree on -- the church HAS been way too lax in MANY areas. I will not state which issues those are, for fear of setting off another hail storm of argument. --- However let me sum up by saying this: Jesus Christ was NOT politically correct, and so neither do I seek to be. A politically correct, post-modernist church is an ugly thing to behold. I have to viemently agree to disagree with you on your last point however. Because I believe it is a view that would chase non-christians away and earn us a milstone around our neck. You can NOT take a piercing or a tatoo as a "CLUE TO WHERE THAT PERSON'S HEART IS" and declare that it means "THEIR HEARTS CERTAINLY AREN'T ON THINGS ABOVE (in Heaven)." My God! I believe you are sincere, but I also believe you are sincerely wrong! Please! I impolore you! - Read Psalm 139:23-24 and ask God Himself to examine you. Have a good pow wow with Him about presuming you can judge the thoughts and intentions of the heart based on outward appearances alone! May He help you to reconcile your passion for righteousness (a very good thing) with His passion for the "untouchables" of this world. (a very divine thing) Love to you - Sang |

Sang Let me clarify one thing I think multiple piercings and tattoos do speak of where the persons heart was at the time. That may not be the same place the heart is at right now but at the time they had the tattoo or piercing that was where their heart was. Now should that drive anyone from the church? No why because once we are in Christ Jesus we become new creatures. We are to judge by their fruit not their appearance. That said I don't think anyone that is in Christ Jesus will continue to stick safety pins through the holes in their brows or washers in the holes in their ears. The holes and tattoos may still be there but they are empty and become nonexistent in the lives of true Christians. EdB |

I would hope they would lose interest in those things too. But I would not reject them if they did not. I would leave it to the Holy Spirit to convict them on this issue, and trust that He would if He knew it was an issue at all. My main concern is to not have Christians rejecting people based on their outward appearance. - And that people do not lay down - on God's behalf - the declaration that these outward things declare that they are not a part of His kingdom. I believe that would be a false representation of who God is. A tragic bad stewardship of our job as His ambassadors. I think we agree on this, we're just coming from different angles. -Sang |

Sang This thread or my participation in was never about rejecting somebody. We should never reject someone on first impression outward appearance. However if a person habitually makes their appearance something other that societal norm then their reason for doing such should be questioned. As that appearance is examined by the individual as they work out their own salvation with fear and trembling I’m certain God will reveal deep seated emotions or attitudes that shouldn’t be held by a Christian. I state that on the belief that body piercing is not a Christian directive but rather comes from a desire to be accepted by a fringe group within society or for the shock value to normal society or a desire to experience pain. These reasons show a weak or non existent relationship with Jesus Christ that should concern any Christian that happens upon them. EdB |

You're saying the same thing........................... Hello EdB and Sang, You are both seem to be saying the same thing here, and I would hope that you could realize that and end this thread. You both believe that getting a tattoo or piercing is not a sin, in and of itself. You both believe that we should not reject any person based solely on exterior appearances. You both believe that people could get piercings or tattoos for reasons that are contrary to God's will. You both believe that we should encourage people to allign their motivations with God's heart. It seems that the only disagreement is that Sang thinks it is possible to get a tattoo or piercing for a good reason, and EdB thinks that there are no good reasons to do either of those things. I think that you've both made your points, which are both good. Can we leave it at that? |
