1 | "Flies" should read "given" | Eccl 10:1 | mark d seyler | 158791
Sid, I don't see where this verse says "dead flies in the ointment stink". In writing this thread, you have in front of you the amplified version, which clearly brings out this distinction, yet you ignore that in favor of making your own point. You claim knowledge of Hebrew, surely you understand that Hebrew is all about context, and the same word can be found in any number of contexts, and is modified by those contexts, right? So when you come and say that a translation is wrong because you haven't experienced what the passage is talking about, aren't you basing you criticizm of that translation on your life experience (or lack thereof), rather than the what the passage is actually saying? Dead flies cause the ointment to stink. This is different than those dead flies stinking themselves. There is something to be said for looking at every instance a word is used to gain a greater understanding, but I really think you can miss some important distinctions if that is all you look at. Love in Christ, Mark |

2 | "Flies" should read "given" | Eccl 10:1 | sid | 158802
To: Mark: You are very free with your criticism. But I am not offended. Tell me as a potential friend, "How many complete books of the Bible have you translated?" I have completed Assembly (Ecclesiastes), and Joel, and Romans, and First John; and most of Matthew; besides editing Daniel, Zechariah, and Revelation in my commentaries. If you have never translated a big book; give it a try! You will be shocked at the knowledge and wisdom required for this task. First of all, years of study must precede such an adventure. But then, teachers are all fallible men of earth; and so, you must "wrestle with God" in prayer, to find many answers. In love, Sid |

Hi sid, Congratulations, my friend! That is a learned and noble task of translation work that you have undertaken! Might I ask what your credentials and specific education are that qualify you in this matter? Not that I doubt, but since you're making the claim I think it a fair question to ask:-) Since you are a newcomer on the Forum and many of us know little about you, why don't you provide us with a brief bio on "Update User info". It would be helpful. Feel free to read mine. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
