1 | People want answers! | Prov 3:5 | stjones | 107724
If I may be so bold.... Perhaps this is not the place to find definitive answers. This forum encourages the exchange of ideas - good, bad, foolish, insightful, even evil perhaps. As soon as you have a panel of "experts", you kill the interchange of ideas. Once the "expert" provides the "correct" interpretation, the dialog ends. No thanks. I have learned from most of the old hands around here. And I have disagreed with every one of them at one time or another. I don't consider any of them - or all of them - qualified to answer every question. I'm sure they all agree that I'm not qualified either. I promise that if the Holy Spirit starts posting answers here, I'll re-think my position. Anyone care to stake that claim? Worse, your proposal relieves all participants of the obligation to be good Bereans and to question every word posted here. The Lockman Foundation does a decent job of sending most of the kooks and whackos packing. They warn visitors that the opinions expressed may not represent commonly-held views. But iron doesn't sharpen iron without friction, heat, and sparks. You can't do serious Bible study by asking questions and passively accepting the answers. The Bereans didn't; I won't either. I commend the Lockman Foundation for having the courage and the faith to make this forum available. You folks are asking for a different web site with a different purpose. Peace and grace, Steve aka Indiana Jones |

2 | Is it true? | Prov 3:5 | Aixen7z4 | 107730
Is it true that this forum encourages the exchange of good, bad, foolish, insightful, even evil ideas? I had assumed otherwise, simply because the owners of the site are publishers of the Bible. I have not checked, but I would be surprised if the also published bad, foolish, insightful, even evil versions of the Bible. I do not doubt that there are all kinds of ideas published on the Internet, and there may well be forums that encourage simple self-expression. But shouldn’t a Bible forum be different? The suggestion is not that one person give all answers. It is not suggested that those who answer get together to confer before answering. It is suggested that they try to bring their answers together much like we would all seek to reconcile Scriptures which seem to say different things. Nor would questioners be passive. The could be aggressive in expressing their thoughts, but in the end they would be asking the “experts” how those thoughts squared with Scripture. I agree that my proposal seems to relieve participants of the obligation to be good Bereans. And the example of the Bereans is often cited. But is it not true that these folks were commended precisely because they were exceptional? Should we expect all Christians to be like that? We know for a fact that they are not. Should we insist then, that every believer be a devoted berean level Bible student or perish? And the people do perish for lack of knowledge. Why are we doing this? Do we invite everyone to our church, all the cults and all, and then tell the people to decide whom they will believe? Do we invite everyone to be on a pannel of Bible translators and to have their say in the final product? Do we bring all the books into our church libraries and let the people read them and decide? And yet I do fear that if we abridge the freedom of the participants to come on and pontificate, that they may not come at all. There may well be fewer participants overall. But is it not worth considering, the quality of the record that is built here? |

3 | Is it true? | Prov 3:5 | EdB | 107732
Aixen7z4 To answer you first question just read the foruma dn you will see just about every crazy idea that man has ever had about religion has been expressed here in one form or another. To your second comment I don't think anyone can say Lockman or any other translator wants to see bad theology spread or promoted in any form or fashion. Lockman has clearly stated the guidelines of users of this forum to follow. However Lockman has also said they cannot justify the expense of someone to oversee the forum. Therefore they have at the bottom of each thread provided a way to report posts that violate those guidelines. In the past when someone comes to the forum with lousy theology various members have made every attempt to correct them. If they refuse the effort then usually someone using the existing methodology to report problems notifies Lockman. From time to time we then see people post that they have been asked to leave by Lockman. As long as there are non believers, members of cults and false religions, deceived people and agents of the adversary, people are going to be exposed to bad doctrine. Whether it is here on this forum or in day to day life. Watch Christian TV is there is more than a little bad and false doctrine preached daily on many programs. Your idea of being good Bereans while noble is in many instances where all this bad theology has come from to start with. Many people without first starting with a systematic theology which encompassed the basic truths of the Bible develop theology based on verses that "spoke" to them. then using human logic and probablymore than a little help from the adversary they develop lusy theology that they are sure is the truth. My suggestion to you is rather than beat this dead horse any longer that you write directly to Lockman with your concerns and ideas. EdB |

I agree. The letter has been sent to Lockman via the e-mail link at the bottom of the page, and I do hope something will be done. If they ask you, please remind them that the proposal does not call for one person to supervise. It calls for several people. It suggests that they are already here and trying to do the task, even without authorization and, as far as I know, they are not paid. I do think they would do it without compensation, that their diversity of backgrounds is not a problem, and that they would band together, even as Bible translators do, to express their thoughts and then bring them together, and they would do a good job. It could turn this here jumble into a treasure.
