1 | Freewill before the fall? | Gen 2:9 | Huron | 125838
Before Adam and Eve ate of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil did they have "freewill"? My guess is they did, but I'm interested in hearing what others think about this verse. Thanks! Huron |

2 | Freewill before the fall? | Gen 2:9 | Mommapbs | 125843
Greetings Huron. Since God told them that they could eat of any tree in the Garden except THAT one, doesn't it make sense that God also gave them an opportunity to do just that? They could choose to obey or not obey. Sound's like free-will to me. Blessings, mommapbs |

I believe the answer to this question is yes. Before the fall, our original parents were endowed with the ability to choose and pursue the will of God. I think it is obvious that they had the power to choose to sin. Therefore, they had the power of freewill. After that event, it gets a bit more complicated. No one ever does anything outside of their own nature. For example, I have the nature of a man. I cannot choose to breathe water like a fish. My nature is man, not fish. What I do, like all men, is choose only those things that seem good to me. In fact, you cannot force me to do anything. If you hold a gun to my head, and order me to do something, this will result in an evaluation. I will see that disobedience might get me killed, a course of action I deem bad. Compliance might spare my life, a course of action I deem good. So I comply. You have not forced me, you have only adjusted the conditions from which I determine my course. Lost people are dead per the fall. They are completely without God and, in fact, see God as one who has usurped their throne. They will never see obedience to God as a good thing, therefore they will never choose it. So, in this sense a lost person does not have free will. The saved person is a new creature. He has been recreated/restored to life by God. His desire to please God has also been restored. Thus he is now able to choose obedience. He is freed from the slavery of sin. So, in this sense, a saved person can be thought of as one who has free will. By the way, Johnathan Edwards explains all this much better than I have in "Bondage of the Human Will." Its a good read for any Christian! |

I respectfully disagree that the lost person does not have free will. God graciously gives each of us the opportunity to choose Him. (Notice that Jesus asks the cripple in John 5:6 - "Do you want to get well?") Indeed, we too have a choice to accept or reject the love of God in Christ which reconciles sinners and restores that which was lost. But imo, free will was NOT lost at the fall of man. I'd have to agree with Mommapbs. Although God does hope to entice us into obeying Him, He certainly does NOT force our hand or our decision. I'm convinced each of us has 100 percent complete and total freedom to choose as we would like. Yes, the fish is forced to live the life of a fish but notice he's free to swim and roam the whole world depending on his species, freshwater or saltwater. In the same regard, yes we humans must live in a finite world and stay here on earth UNLESS we take our own supply of food and oxygen with us. Thus we can choose to make of our life what we like both physically and most especially our spiritual lives. We can choose to live the lifestyle of a chirstian and do the best in following the Bible, OR we can choose to follow any other course like the Devil or just not choose which is really a cop out. Those are the only two choices we have. And of course, God will hold us accountable for our choices. Hope this helps to clarify and Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Bruce7, It might help if you could qualify your question with a reference as to what exactly your looking for:-) It's a bit open-ended. I would have to believe in being chosen as scripture tells me I am. Particularly Col. 3:12: "So, as those who have been chosen of God..." 2nd Thessalonians tells us that "...we should always give thanks to God for you, brethren beloved by the Lord, because God has chosen you from the beginning for salvation..." Obviously there are numerous other references such as 1 Tim. 5:21, 2 Tim. 2:10, Tit. 1:1 and 1 Pet. 2:9, etc. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
