Inmyheart I wasn’t being a wise guy when I said I didn’t have a problem with you answer. I was trying to say my question wasn’t focused on your answer, but rather on the common practice of taking a passage from the Bible and declaring it as not pertaining to this generation. In regards to 1 Tim 2:9 my point exactly, should this be considered an admonishment for all generations or just for the period and time when it was written. We all claim “sola scriptura” but then we will take a passage and say that does not pertain to us today that was just for that time. Most of the books of Corinthians were written to correct problems within the church of Corinth. Some of the teaching contained within 1 and 2 Corinthians is taken to pertain to the church today while others is discarded as being only applicable to the church in Corinth. My question to everyone is can we do this? EdB |

EdB, When an attempt is made to interpret scripture in the light of the culture and customs that prevailed at the time the passage was written, there is the risk of being accused of trying to take away the Bible's authority and render biblical precepts as irrelevant for our day, but just because some twist scripture for their own ends, does not invalidate the need to consider the cultural background of these passages. Any true exposition of Scripture must take these things into account if the exposition is to be valid. Should we attempt to wear the same type of clothing style that was worn by those who lived in biblical times? Our present day attire bears no resemblance to those times, should we wear loin cloths, so that we can take literally the command to "gird up our loins"? Should the practice of foot-washing be continued even if we do not live under the same conditions that made that custom popular? Do we insist on "real wine" when we have our communion services, or do we yield to the present day attitude that says it's not proper for a Christian to drink alcohol? Are we disobeying God when we do not adhere to the letter of the word in these issues? While I'm not suggesting that it would be fundamentally wrong for a Christian or Church to practice wearing loin cloths, use real wine in communion, practice the "foot- washing" tradition, wear the head-covering, etc., I do think that it is wrong to make these cultural issues a basis for Christian fellowship. Don't get me wrong . . . I do not have a problem if your Church has attempted to find a static equilibrium that existed during biblical times and has attempted to duplicate those conditions. However, I do have a problem with the innuendo that for one to be a Christian, or to be true to God, they must follow you in your attempt to enforce cultural standards that existed during that period (which spans thousands of years, by the way) on the 20th century Church. Inmyheart I agree what is in our hearts is far more important than what is on our backs. I also agree that cultural differences are fact and definitely effect how we interrelate to each other. And if anyone but a omnipresent, omniscient, and omnipotent and eternal God wrote the Bible I would say, “yes they are for the most part “color commentary” and we are to regarded or disregarded them as such.” However the fact remains God knew that these generational, cultural differences would exist and yet allowed certain aspects to be included in the text of the Bible. When this occurs in Scripture, it’s always in areas of conduct, notice how specific each are in the particular area it addresses. Notice also Scripture always talks about intent of the heart along with the actual deed. Nothing is said about execution like you shall wear togas and not button down shirts. Instead it says women should not dress like man. It doesn’t say not to curl your hair, color your hair, even perm your hair. It says man should have short hair and woman long. Nothing is mentioned like walk don’t ride in anything mechanical. Or never work on an assembly line but rather do everything by hand, never have libraries or information depositories instead pass everything down by word of mouth, only use papyrus never computers. The real things that change from generation to generation, from society to society, custom to custom are never mentioned. We the church today disregards many things contributing them to be culture, custom, generation, social and I wonder how many God actually meant to be standards for our life. EdB |

EdB, We can read the Bible, notice the surface list — the LITTLE things — and actually make some progress. OR . . . we can ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to us the deep, abiding principles of heaven. And then we REALLY fall on our knees and confess our need of a Savior. God bless |

EdB, That is true. Romans 12:2 Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is--his good, pleasing and perfect will. Do the women at your church practice having long hair? If not, why not? God bless |

Good day! There are several issues in the Bible that I believe should be taken as a 'cultural issue'. One of them is the wearing of long hair of women. In the time of Paul, women have long hair; in 1Cor 11:1-16, you will read the argument of having long hair for women. Take note of 'verse 16' it says "If anyone wants to be contentious about this, WE HAVE NO OTHER PRACTICE --nor do the churches of God." (capital letters was added by me). Since it was the culture then for women to have long hair, it became the church practice too. Look at the Victorian times as to how women dress themselves. Long and well covered. Try to wear the same dress in this era, will you be accepted? NO, because it is neither normal nor a practice at this time. FYI : In the old times, reading is not done silently; the words you are reading should be spoken audibly. Now, you may read silently. You will be considered possessed when you read silently in old times. God has chosen to reveal His Words . . . to reveal Himself in a specific time, people and culture. These three things should be considered in understanding the issues in the Bible. If God will chose to reveal Himself in this era, for sure it will not be an issue for women to wear pants and short hair. Rom. 16:16 "Greet one another with a holy kiss" Why are Christians not greeting each other with a kiss? We greet each other by handshake or a hug. Greeting each other with a kiss was a practice in their times but not in this era. Except for the Arabs, they still greet each other with a kiss in the cheek. WHY? It is their culture. In India, there are churches that practice the covering of hair for women; and men and women are separated. For Catholics, women covers their hair before when they hear mass (service) but not anymore. See, culture and time dictates some of the issues in the Bible. If I may put it, there are what we can call temporal (dictated by culture and time) and permanent (should be practised universally) practices. Permanent : Holy communion, baptism, praying for one another, etc. Temporal : greet w/ a holy kiss, separation of men and women in the church, wearing of veil, etc. Just a view to share. In Christ, Romans |
