Bible Question:
EdB: You pose an interesting question. How does one determine what is "color commentary" on how to live and what is "direction" for living? Do we read, study, and examine scripture to glean the overarching prinicple God wants us to live by? Continuing to use as an example the issue of long hair for women per 1 Corinthians, is the overarching principle God wants us to live by that women live and present themselves in such a manner as to glorify God in all manner of dress and care of self? I would humbly suggest, yes. I also cannot help but think this section in 1 Corinthians speaks to the current issue of women dressing like men and wearing their hair as many men do. Further, look at the entire context of this passage. What is the main focus? Prayer. And the second issue? The headship of man. I pray I don't raise the hackles of a few readers by tossing out some of these thoughts. I look forward to reading some of the forum contributers thoughts on this topic. Bible Answer: Beensetfree: Here again folks often look at such scripture in argumentative fashion, but as you say the scripture is about prayer and headship, which if addressed at the heart would reveal rebellion, an unwilingness to acknowledge or accept authority. Women have not been properly taught that submission to God first means submission to their husband, and although the husband may not be submitted to God's authority, the wife is still under him. The sad lesson here is that when a woman decides here husband is not worthy to be in authority and takes that position or rather rebels, she places herself out of God's will and therefore out of His protective care. On the flip side if women were properly taught they would understand that by submitting to the husbands authority and committing their care to God, He could intervene in the relationship on her behalf. How a woman dresses is a matter of the heart. However, if one sees a new believer from a perverse life start to church and still wearing the clothes of the world, one of the ladies might offer to take her shopping and purchase her some new ones. She may lack both the funds and the Before the gossip starts and drives the baby from the fellowship. I have seen this happen. |
