Greetings Brother! The Lord Himself, in His instructions on prayer directed that one ask for forgiveness. Matthew 6:12 (NASB) And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. Luke 11:4 (NASB) And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us. And lead us not into temptation. How can it be that it would be an insult to Him to then ask Him? Asking for forgiveness of sin is in fact confessing you have sinned is it not? Steve |

Hi Steve, 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. The word confess as found in the previous verse is the Koine Greek word HOMOLOGEO and its etymology originated in the courts where the accused was told to admit or state what was done even though he was caught in the act. When Jesus used the word “repent” He had not yet paid the price for sin. Now since the death of Christ on the cross, God is able to forgive the believers sin because of what Christ did to satisfy the righteousness and the justice of God. All of our pre salvation sins where handled the moment we believed in God’s Son Jesus Christ. The “penalty for sin” was paid for at the cross but our post salvation sins aren’t forgiven until we confess them to God the Father thus "restoring" fellowship. Any sin, in the believer’s life, quenches or grieves the indwelling Holy Spirit; and even though He will never leave us, since we are always indwelt by the Spirit from point of salvation, we can still lose His fellowship by neglecting to exercise the function of 1John 1:9. That was the big problem that was taking place in Corinthian church. 1 Cor. 3:3 For ye are yet carnal: for whereas there is among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men? They were neglecting to get back in fellowship and as a result they couldn’t grow because the Holy Spirit was grieved and couldn’t teach them, i.e. they were out of fellowship and needed to be filled. Ephes. 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; The word filled or, PLEROO, means to fill up a deficiency or get back in fellowship. All sin before the death of Christ could only be covered or atoned for, but not actually removed and dealt with. God's Messiah actually removed sin being the perfect Lamb of God. Before Jesus paid the awesome price for sin one needed to ask for God to forgive him on a different basis other then what we have, since his propitious work is "completed". Thus my implication that it is an insult to God to ask for forgiveness since God has already made the provision in the person of His Son. Now I suppose I have everyone confused, CDBJ |

Greetings Brother, If God were insulted, it would be by the sin and I would think never by the repentant heart seeking to restore a right relationship with him and asking for forgiveness. I find no biblical support the Lords instructions on prayer found in Matthew 6:12 and Luke 11:4 are applicable only until His death and resurrection and/or limited to a period of time. It is interesting that if the Lord intended Matthew 6:12 to be limited in it's application that he would comment even further in verses 14 and 15 and that we would find this teaching elsewhere (Mark 11:25; Luke 6:37; Ephesians 4:32; Col. 3:13; Matthew 18:35; James 2:13). Yes, which is why I am confused by your previous posts. Why would one have to ask for what they already have? | ||||||

Greetings again Dr. Steeno! Sorry for the delay in responding. Long days on the job I have been so blessed to have! You said "Why would one have to ask for what they already have?" From scripture we clearly see there is a need to! For the Lord Himself said ""Pray, then, in this way..."(Matthew 9 NASB) ... "And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors." (Matthew 9:12 NASB). And in Luke 11:4 (NASB) "And forgive us our sins, For we ourselves also forgive everyone who is indebted to us..." It must be noted, the Lords instruction is not instructing one to pray for salvation. This is instruction for a child of God "Our Father who is in heaven ... (Matthew 6:9). Again, from scripture (1 John 1:8, Romans 7:14-25, ) we know we still sin! In 1 John 1:9 if there is need to confess our sin there is need for forgiveness. Again, 1 John 2:1 (NASB) "...And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous". John 13:10 (NASB) "Jesus said to him, "He who has bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean..." Clearly, a Christian can and does still sin! If we have been born again, our salvation secured (Which I believe by the way), why then would we need to seek forgiveness when we continue to stumble and sin? As I understand it, we can stay right there in 1 John 1 to get a good idea of why? 1 John 1:5-7 (NASB) 1:5 This is the message we have heard from Him and announce to you, that God is Light, and in Him there is no darkness at all. In Him there is no darkness! 1:6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth; 1:7 but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. Note in verse 6 the claim to fellowship and what it is we do not practice (Truth) when we "yet walk in the darkness". Ah, "but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship" with Him! What fellowship has light with darkness? I hope this helps clear up anything I may have confused you on!
