Church membership and salvation are not viewed by Scripture as being two entities; they are one and the same. We can no more join a church than we can save ourselves. When a person is saved, he doesn't have an option of whether to "join" a church. God adds him to the church (Acts 2:47), the body of Christ (Eph.1:23). The church was purchased by the blood of Christ (Acts 20:28; Eph. 5:25). Every regenerate believer belongs to the body of Christ, the church. Therefore, it is totally inconsistent with Scripture for a regenerate believer to say, "I'm a Christian but I'm not a member of the church." It is impossible to rate the importance of the church in our lives without at the same time rating the importance of Christ in our lives. It is equally impossible to be saved without being a member of Christ's church. There exist today, as they have existed for some 2,000 years, groups that call themselves churches that bear little, if any, resemblance to the church that Christ died for. It is quite possible to become a member of these counterfeit organizations and not be saved. These we join on our own. God does not add us to them. They deserve to be rated "zero" on our scale of importance and avoided as the deceivers they are. --Hank

Good point! Maybe a person can say I'm a Christian but I'm not a member of any particular church." as in demonination??? Or they can say I'm a member of Christ's church but I'm not affiliated w/any particular church or demonination?

Of course, Norrie, a person CAN say that he is a Christian but not affiliated with any particular congregation of believers, but that isn't what Scripture teaches: "Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works, not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as is the manner of some, but exhorting one another, and so much the more as you see the day approaching." (Hebrews 10:23-25). Thus it is clear that in the Lord's House is the place the Christian ought to be on the Lord's Day. Given the great number of churches in which the pure gospel of Christ is still being taught and believed, it is hard to find a legitimate excuse for forsaking regular worship in the house of the Lord. --Hank

Sometimes it's hard to find a place you are comfortable at. I know when I go out of town and have to look for a church, I can't find one. Maybe now I look at what I have and want the same thing in another. But sometimes it's hard to find a church you feel comfortable. I know when I was visiting my aunt in MD, we found one where the people came to church in their picnic clothes, had a band for praise and worship, one girl had green hair, did mostly "feel good" msg, had no desire to go back. :) Sometimes you wonder if it's supposed to be house of the Lord or a bunch of people playing church and making their own rules as they go along.

Well, Norrie, you simply must learn to stay clear of those Martian churches where the girls have green hair! :-) My wife and I hardly ever have occasion to visit other churches, but on one of those rare occasions we found the congregants extremely cold and unfriendly. I threatened to write the church a letter of apology for our intrusion upon the sanctity of their presence, but my wife talked me out of it. We didn't notice anyone with green hair, however. I see enough of the carnival atmosphere on religious TV cable shows to do me, and I suppose that this farce is being replicated in various congregations that call themselves churches. It's disturbing to say the least to see what is supposed to be a house of worship turned into a feel-good hootenanny. --Hank

This was a Martian Methodist church. :) Funny thing is too, we couldn't hardly find a church w/a bldg and most were meeting in school auditoriums. I thought that was a tad strange. Of course one time I tried to find my aunt a church by writing Kenneth Hagin and asking for a recommendation in that area and he sent some, then she couldn't find them-I guess that turned out OK. :) Then they found another church but there were problems w/them too, something about not becoming a member unless you submit to strict titheing, I don't know. For a bunch of supposed Christians there, it sure is hard to find a church! Maybe that is why there are so many people who don't have a home church. I thank God I got mine but it took awhile finding it. Sometimes when we've moved to new town, some Baptists would invite us to church, but they were always the strict Baptists where smiling was a sin and it seemed no matter what part of country you went to, it was the same sermon, different preacher, on how to be saved. Well, I was already saved, I wanted to know what to do afterwards. That why I like my church. It's So. Bapt but they preach the gospel about everything, not just salvation.
