1 | Why should we pray to Mary? | 1 Tim 2:5 | LisaMarie | 26428
Hi Nolan! Bright blessings to you. Tomorrow being the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe, I thought this would be good to post in response to you. I'm not posting this in some attempt to get you to take up marian devotion. Just find a little grace and understanding in your heart for those of us who have. The important thing to remember - prior to the apparitions - the Mexican people held bloody sacrifices to their pagan gods. In the tens of thousands! Their ideal sacrifice being their very own infant children! Our Lady of Guadalupe December 12 (USA) When we reflect on the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe we learn two important lessons, one of faith and one of understanding. Missionaries who first came to Mexico with the conquistadors had little success in the beginning. After nearly a generation, only a few hundred Native Mexicans had converted to the Christian faith. Whether they simply did not understand what the missionaries had to offer or whether they resented these people who made them slaves, Christianity was not popular among the native people. Then in 1531 miracles began to happen. Jesus' own mother appeared to humble Juan Diego. The signs -- of the roses, of the uncle miraculously cured of a deadly illness, and especially of her beautiful image on Juan's mantle -- convinced the people there was something to be considered in Christianity. Within a short time, six million Native Mexicans had themselves baptized as Christians. The first lesson is that: God has chosen Mary to lead us to Jesus. No matter what critics may say of the devotion of Mexicans (and Mexican descendants) to Our Lady of Guadalupe, they owe their Christianity to her influence. If it were not for her, they would not know her son, and so they are eternally grateful. The second lesson we take from Mary herself. Mary appeared to Juan Diego not as a European madonna but as a beautiful Aztec princess speaking to him in his own Aztec language. If we want to help someone appreciate the gospel we bring, we must appreciate the culture and the mentality in which they live their lives. By understanding them, we can help them to understand and know Christ. Our Lady of Guadalupe is patron of the Americas. Dear Nolan, do you pray for those you love? Are those prayers answered? For me, I have a far easier time praying for others than for myself. This is called intercessory prayer. Who better to bring our prayers to Jesus than his own mother? John chapter 2 teach us that Mary can convince him to do things he's not ready for. John 2 1 On the third day a wedding took place at Cana in Galilee. Jesus' mother was there, 2 and Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine was gone, Jesus' mother said to him, "They have no more wine." 4 "Dear woman, why do you involve me?" Jesus replied. "My time has not yet come." 5 His mother said to the servants, "Do whatever he tells you." 6 Nearby stood six stone water jars, the kind used by the Jews for ceremonial washing, each holding from twenty to thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to the servants, "Fill the jars with water"; so they filled them to the brim. 8 Then he told them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." They did so, 9 and the master of the banquet tasted the water that had been turned into wine. He did not realize where it had come from, though the servants who had drawn the water knew. Then he called the bridegroom aside 10 and said, "Everyone brings out the choice wine first and then the cheaper wine after the guests have had too much to drink; but you have saved the best till now." 2 | Why should we pray to Mary? | 1 Tim 2:5 | Makarios | 26434
Greetings Lisa! Thank you for the information on Guadalupe, even though I feel that it has little, if anything, to do with Mary. John 2:1-10 in no way suggests that we should somehow bring our prayers to Mary. Nowhere in the Bible is there a Scripture that suggests that Mary is also in intercession for the saints like Jesus, who is our only Advocate (1 John 2:1). Only He can intercede for us, since He was the only one who was without sin. To preach that another person was without sin is to defy 2 Cor. 5:21. Mary does not have the characteristics of God spoken of in 1 Tim. 6:16, and to worship her or give her any exaltation whatsoever beyond that of Luke 1:42-45 is equivalent to idolatry. There is nothing in Scripture that says that Mary was more than just a woman disciple, like yourself. In fact, I was alittle astonished in John 2:4 (upon reading it for the first time) that Jesus adressed his mother as "Woman".. You would think that if Mary were so exalted, that He would have given her alittle more respect here in this verse. And He even corrects her! Also, did not Simeon say to Mary that "a sword will pierce your own soul too"? (Luke 2:35) Even Mary was in need of Jesus as her own Savior, even though God used Mary as the "vessel" in which to deliver Jesus to earth. Mary would learn the truth about Jesus, and she would come to know Him as Lord and Savior, not just as her son. Mary was only human and she died a human death. However, she stood at the foot of the cross not only as a weeping mother, but also as a fervent disciple in anguish! For Mary knew the truth about Jesus all along- that He was in fact immaculately conceived (Isaiah 7:14), even though there were times where she treated Jesus just as a human boy (Luke 2:48). She came to understand that He was very special, and said, "Do whatever he tells you." (John 2:5) And even when Jesus was involved in his ministry, Mary still had not fully grasped Jesus' purpose! "Who are my mother and my brothers?" (Mark 3:31-35) "Whoever does God's will is my brother and sister and mother." And Jesus' "earthly" immediate family, including Mary, said: "When his family heard about this, they went to take charge of him, for they said, "He is out of his mind." (Mark 3:21)! If Mary was more than just a human, woman disciple, wouldn't she have known better than to allege that He was out of His mind? This further lends support to the fact that Mary should NOT be worshipped, but she is to respected in the same way that the "heroes" are to be respected (Hebrews 11) and nothing more. Mary was only a woman disciple and that is it. Any other interpretation is not based upon the Bible itself and what it teaches. Blessings to you, Nolan |

This is where the lack of understanding comes into play. Mary is not worshipped. The term is devotion. Not worship. I give up, Nolan. I'll shut up now. Hugs, Lisa |

I did untill I listened to what I was saying. But Mary is a sensitive matter with Catholics. She is so deep rooted in their belief they just do it. It's just a given. However if you go back and study the history, what a virgin was 2000 years ago, and the reaction a non married mother to be got. If you can take time out and study writing that are not of the 'official' writings, how she, mary magdalena and other followers were treated and how they spread the word and the work they did. it brings the story so to life. Try it. Remember the word heritic comes from the greek word to think for yourself. Jesus says, Ask and you will receive. This isn't a option it's a command..

What is the matter with you? All I did is quote two reference sources to define the meaning of the Greek word translated heresy or heretic. If you have a problem with these definitions, I suggest you write to the publishers.
