Bible Question (short): God and Man at the same time! (?)

Question (full): A preacher said that Jesus was (and is?) eternal god and that many people disagree with him. And that if he isnt, we are of all men most misrerable. And the reason he gives is that in order for Jesus to be able to give us eternal life, he has to have eternal life inherit in himself. Now this confuses me a bit becouse to whom did Jesus pray ? To the father in heaven (maybe becouse he was also a man ? and was giving an example?). I probably listen to this preachers series of sermons more than i read the bible and this thing got me thinking alot and i wanted to ask someone who has an opinion on this based on the bible. And i dont think its easy to reach this preacher becouse he doesnt know how to turn on a computer (no email).

I guess its just hard to understand that he was (?) a man and god at the same time.
