Subject: Theological Term: Sacerdotalism |
Bible Note: Sacerdotalism (from Latin sacerdos meaning priest) is the belief in the special authority of priests to act as spiritual mediators between man and God. The Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and high Anglican traditions are all sacerdotal. According to this view priests have a special mediatorial role, but are not necessarily deemed as more godly than other men. This role of mediator, granted under the auspices of the Church, is particularly important, for example, in Roman Catholic practices of confession, mass, and last rites. In the midst of all the rhetoric, this belief is probably the most fundamental characteristic by which Protestants are distinguished. The Reformers asserted the Biblical doctrine of the "priesthood of all believers." The Scriptures teach that a believer is able to offer spiritual sacrifices of praise, prayer, and intercession directly to God through the Lord Jesus Christ, our only Mediator and Advocate. |
