Hi Brad, Even as I wrote that, I had a certain feeling inside that it didn't exactly represent what I believe. Even our faith comes from Him. (Eph. 2:8 ...it is the gift of God) I think of this as my allowing the faith He has put in me to do its work. As I receive the Word, and it mixes with faith (Heb. 4:2), I have the option to continue to (now knowingly) reject God, or to end my rebellion, and allow myself to be brought into the fold. As far as I can determine, the only thing I contribute to my salvation is consent. As I understand the Bible, God will not save those who do not obey (Heb 5:9). It seems to me that God does everything for me, but I have to agree to do it His way. I appreciate your words "as scripture never says this" - I always appreciate any challenge to remain firmly based on His Word. I suspect when we discuss this issue, we use the words that best mean to each of us what we believe. When I say "obey", I mean obey the one I know is Lord. I am guessing when you say believe, (correct me if I am wrong) you are believing in Who Jesus is, Savior, Lord, and so much more. Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Mark, Thanks for your response:-) I would add and say that God saves those who come to Him by faith- place their trust in His Son, Jesus Christ. The "obedience" in the context of salvation- as I understand it- is the obedience of faith ,like Abraham in the great chapter on faith in Hebrews: "By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going." (Heb. 11:8) Also, Romans 1:5 tells us "...through whom we have received grace and apostleship to bring about the obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name’s sake,: (cf 16:26) Certainly, how we "work out our salvation" is because "...we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them." (Eph. 2:10) Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi Brad, So I would go on to say that we obey because we believe. Belief and obedience go hand in hand, as "faith without works is dead". If we obey, but do not believe, these are dead works. If we believe, but do not obey, this is dead faith. I think I would ammend my statement to be "Believing, we obey. Obeying, we are saved." Would you agree with this? Love in Christ, Mark |

4 | Human Power? | John 15:5 | BradK | 128972 | ||
Hi Mark, Let's just say I don't disagree- per se:-) However, let's put it in biblical terms that are more easily understandable: "that if you confess with your mouth Jesus as Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved" (Rom. 10:9) I agree that your words "we obey because we believe" echo that of Eph. 2:10. I think we're on track, my brother. Possibly we could say that faith and works are 2 sides of the same coin? True faith exhibits works. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi Brad, I would agree 100 percent that faith and works are, as you say, two sides of the same coin. I've always liked to say that if I believe the room I am in is burning, I will run. Blessings and Love in Christ, Mark |
