Subject: Praying for the Missionary |
Bible Note: How to pray for Missionaries ----------------------------------------- How do we usually pray when we pray for those whom we know that are going into or who are in the mission field? Usually, a group of believers might pray in this way, "Dear Lord, please help our Brother and Sister over there in that country to win souls for you and keep and protect them in safety." Well, that prayer is good, but we could be doing so much better in our prayers for missionaries! Missionaries go out with the promise from their home church that they will be kept in constant prayer by those on the home front, providing 'spiritual coverage' and support for them as the Lord uses them. Prayer opens doors in magical ways for the Missionary, but a lack of prayer is a great stumbling block for Missionaries. When we go to pray for them, we must consider: What are their needs as they minister out on the mission field? 1) "Give us this day our daily bread." Matthew 6:11 We must pray in a specific way: that the Lord will feed the missionaries with His Word as they seek to feed others. 2) "for we walk by faith, not by sight" 2 Cor. 5:7 We must pray that the Lord will continue to uphold the Missionary's testimony by keeping them from the temptation to change their doctrine! We must pray that the doctrine and message that they left with is the same in which they preach out on the field and come back with, when they are finished! This is also a specific prayer to make in regards to the Missionary. 3) "You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." James 4:3 We must pray that the Lord will keep the heart and devotion of the Missionary pure, so that there will be no "moral failures" amongst the Missionaries that only add to the disgrace of the church amongst those unbelievers, making it that much more difficult to reach them with the Word. Please pray for the moral integrity of the Missionary, so that they may be able to stand in the face of temptation. "I am the vine, you are the brances; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing." John 15:5 We could use an analogy: A man had two brothers, and one brother fell down a well. The man said to his remaining brother, "Lower me down in this basket with these ropes, and then I will grab our brother, and pull us up." The man who is being lowered by his brother from the top is counting on those ropes to hold him, or else there will be two brothers lost. The same could be said for prayer in regards to the Missionary - if we "cut" the ropes of prayer for the Missionary, then the Missionary will be lost, grabbing in places in which there has been no spiritual cover, vulnerable to attacks from the enemy, and without encouragement. This underscores just how important it is to continue to keep our Missionaries in prayer! - Makarios |
