Bible Question:
Do you believe that it is possible to prove the existence of God? I do..... Well, at least to prove the existence of some being that is not bound by time and therefore is "spirit." I have been working on an argument along these lines for some time and would love some feedback on it. But while I am attempting to post such an argument that fits this forums space limits and is articulate, I'd love your (and anyone else’s) feedback on the question, is it possible to prove that some higher power/being exists or not. Bible Answer: Dear MJH, Maybe I'm not too original on this subject, but there are two arguments that force us to acknowledge the existence of a creator -- together they seem to be particularly persuasive. One is old, the other relatively new. The old one is routed in the Latin phrase "Ex nihilo nihil fit" -- out of nothing, nothing comes. This is the classic cosmological argument. The new one (at least, it was first voiced in my lifetime) is the anthropic principle -- that man's existence is only possible because the constants of physics and the parameters for our universe and for our planet lie within specific restricted ranges, too absurdly improbable to be anything but the source of inteligent design. This is a new twist on the teleological argument. (I was a Physics/Astronomy major ages and ages ago. Perhaps that is why this argument appeals to me so much.) Of course, from a Scriptural standpoint we have a number of evidences: the Word itself (Gen 1:1), the world (Rom 1:20), man (Gen 1:26), and nature (Psa 19:1-2). All of these evidences -- which run the gamut of the most common arguments -- could be the subject of much discussion. I'm doing that off-the-cuff kind of post, again. I hope my haste does adequate service to your solicitation for contribution to this topic. In Him, Doc |
