NASB | 1 John 1:8 If we say that we have no sin, we are deceiving ourselves and the truth is not in us. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 John 1:8 If we say we have no sin [refusing to admit that we are sinners], we delude ourselves and the truth is not in us. [His word does not live in our hearts.] |
Bible Question:
I light of 1 John 1:8 and Romans 7 and the fact that Jesus is our eternal high priest and intercessor should we consider living in sinless perfection a possibility or as goal at which to aim. Can we in fact live sinless lives? I realize we can be forgiven of our sins and when that occurs we are sinless. But can we go through life and never ever commit another sin? If not what verse other than Paul's decision in Roman 7 and this verse in 1 John 1:8 confirms that? Again I realize we should strive and make every effort to reach sinless perfection but my question is can we actually do it in this imperfect body in this imperfect world or will we only reach sinless perfection when were are given our perfect bodies? |
Bible Answer: To everyone I'm not trying to be argumentative. I'm not trying to trick or trap anybody. This is a legitimate question. Can we live in sinless perfection? If not what scripture says that. If yes what scripture says that. As a side question nearly everyone answers the above question with verses out of Romans 6-8. Saying we are free of sin, dead to sin, sin doesn't have dominion over us, we are dead to the law, we are free of the law and etc. My question then becomes what does that mean? We can still sin can we not? We are still tempted are we not? Scripture in 1 Cor 6:9,10 Ephesians 5:5,6 Galatians 5:19,20 lists various sins and seems to say if you are guilty of these you can not get into heaven. So what has changed according to the verses found in Romans 6-8 I use Abraham for an example. He sinned. He was forgiven. He was tempted. He trusted in the Messiah for his salvation. We sin We are forgiven We are tempted. We trust in the Messiah Jesus for our salvation. Now considering Romans 6-8 what is different in our walk than the walk Abraham walked other than Jesus has come and provided the salvation we both needed. |
